• Clifford Ellis (1907-1985) William the Pug - on the Table

    36x25cm including frame 17x17cm excluding frame Pencil sketch Provenance: the family of the artist, by descent. Born in Bognor in Sussex and trained at St Martin’s School of Art and Regent Street Polytechnic, Ellis was a graphic artist and illustrator who is best known for the posters he produced for London Transport during the 1930s. He generally collaborated with his wife Rosemary – whom he married in 1931 – on their posters. The General Post Office, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board were also clients for their posters. They signed their posters C&RE, their initials being in alphabetical order and they are readily recognisable by their ebullient use of colour and form. Employed during the war as a camoufleur, along with so many other artists, Clifford was also an official war artist, serving with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary, meanwhile, was an artist for the Recording Britain project. Following the war they trained art teachers at Bath Academy of Art. They also designed a series of nearly one hundred book jackets for Collins New Naturalist series, published between 1945 and 1982 and were always fascinated by animals and natural history, as with this sketch.     c.1945 75x50cm Original Vintage Poster During World War 2, the British Government had two particular financial problems addressed by this poster. There was little to buy, so the general populace had surplus cash to spend. If they spent it, this would be inflationary and would reduce the supply of items. Likewise, the Government needed money to spend on materiel and was short of cash. Encouraging the population to lend its spare cash to the Government was therefore a solution to this problem, and a series of posters - and other advertisings campaigns - aimed to address this point.     1960 Watercolour 29.5x20cm Signed with initials and dated lower left Avioth is in the Meuse region of France, on the Belgian border. The city was founded in the twelfth century, when a villager miraculously found a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in a thorn bush. A chapel built on the site soon became a place of pilgrimage and the church on the site - dedicated to Notre Dame - was created a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1983. Beside the Basilica stands the Recevresse, a piece of stone lacework. Its original function is unknown; it was more recently a place where pilgrims' offerings were received. It was registered as a historical monument in 1840 by the French authorities. Sir Albert Edward Richardson K.C.V.O., F.R.I.B.A, F.S.A., P.R.A. (1880-1964) was a traditionalist, renowned for his distaste of modern architecture. Rooted firmly in the classical period, he lived a Georgian life, refusing to have electricity in his Georgian house – until his wife finally insisted. Professor of Architecture at UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture from 1929-1955, this was evacuated to Cambridge during the war and he became a fellow of St Catharine’s College. Amongst his other achievements, Richardson was President of the RA, editor of Architect’s Journal and founder of the Georgian Group. Princess Elizabeth (later Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip married on Thursday 20th November 1947 at Westminster Abbey in London. This map, commissioned and sold by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, was designed by N. V. Gray. It depicts the route the carriage processions took on the way to the Abbey; Princess Elizabeth and her father King George Vi travelled in the magnificent Irish State Coach. Shapiro was an American Jewish artist. The Camms were stained glass designers who exhibited 48 times at the Royal Academy and also exhibited at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, The Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Thomas William Camm's work was widely acclaimed, with his studio winning medals in Paris in 1878, in Sydney in 1879 and in Turin in 1911. In 1915, the American architect Ralph Adams Cram wrote that 'at the present moment a large number of artists in England are producing work of most singular beauty and perfection. Amongst these I have no hesitation in placing Mr. Camm easily as the first'. Following the death of her father, Florence Camm became the chief designer at TW Camm. Condition: very good; in oak frame.       Engraving 35 x 46 cm A view of Exeter College, Oxford from Turl Street. Labourers cobble the road. The spire of what was All Saints Church, now Lincoln College's library, overlooks the scene. Turner's drawing was reproduced as a lithograph in 1800, to be published in the “Oxford Almanack”. The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanack published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to “dwindling interest”). The almanack traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanack artists have included Michael Burghers and John Piper. Basire and Dayes collaborated on several views of Oxford during the courses of their careers. Joseph Mallord William Turner RA, known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colouring, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent, marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. James Basire II was a British engraver, son of James Basire I, also a celebrated engraver. In 1802 he became Engraver to the Society of Antiquaries.     Mary Fedden (1915 - 2012)

    The Tabac Jar

      Lithograph 26 x 31 cm Signed lower right and numbered 156/550 lower left, both in pencil; signed and dated 1996 in the plate. A typically Fedden still life: a fruit bowl, jug of utensils, and vine of tomatoes on a gingham tablecloth. Beyond the table, a harbour scene including whitewashed buildings, sailing boat, and lighthouse. The form of the objects in her still life composition, and her lilting use of perspective, are immediately recognisable as Fedden's style. Mary Fedden was a Bristol-born artist who studied at the Slade School of Art in London in the 1930s. She painted sets for ballets at Sadlers Wells, then went on to teach art and paint portraits in Bristol. During the war she served in the Land Army and the Woman's Voluntary Service, and then worked in London as a stage painter for the Arts Theatre. In 1944 she went overseas as a driver for the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes. In 1946 she resumed easel painting and held her first exhibition at the Mansard Gallery in Heal's Department Store in 1947. In 1951 she married the artist Julian Trevelyan, and the couple travelled the world together. She began to teach painting at the Royal Academy in the late 1950s and was elected RA in 1992. She lived and worked in her Durham Wharf studio from 1949 until her death. Condition: generally very good; framed.     Shrewsbury Abbey, Design for Stained Glass Window Dedicated to St Winefride (1990)

    The red sandstone Abbey that resides over Shrewsbury is a welcoming landmark to visitors entering the town and dates back to the Norman era. Despite many renovations and alterations over the years, the medieval and Victorian elements marry remarkably naturally in this grand yet dignified place of worship. Shrewsbury abbey is home to several notable tombs and monuments as well as the remnants of a medieval shrine to St Winefride who was once venerated there. The central light at the top depicts the Trinity, where the Holy Spirit is represented by a dove, God by a vortex (left) and Christ by a lamb (right). The trinity remain linked throughout the design by a blue ribbon decorated with crosses and water droplets. St Winefride’s spiritual strength is represented by the large, central red cross, and her initial rests at its foot. In the left light, beneath the vortex, is corn, and to the right, grapes, both symbols uniting to form a timeless reference to the Eucharist. Below is the ship, a symbol of thee Ecumenical church, and on the right are seven doves representing the seven gifts of the holy spirit: wisdom, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Two small roundels with Alpha and Omega (‘I am the beginning and the end’ as God notes in the Book of Revelations) unify the upper and lower windows in the design. The central lower light depicts St Winefride, set against a starry backdrop, holding the Martyr’s Palm and Cross beneath her martyr’s crown. The water that is said to have spewed forth from her decapitated head is symbolically illustrated in the fountain at her feet that flows into the adjacent lights. Further symbols to Saint Winefride adorn both the left and right lights. The crossed keys and inverted cross (left light) represent Saint Peter, and the sword, book, and anchor rounded cross represent Saint Paul, the saints to whom Shrewsbury Abbey is dedicated. The window was installed in 1992.

    St Oswald’s Church, Oswestry, Shropshire, Design for Stained Glass Window (2001)

    St Oswald’s Church in Oswestry, Shropshire has been a place of worship for nearly 1000 years and commands a prominent position in the Town Centre. The church has a rich history, with William Morgan, who famously translated the whole Bible into Welsh, appointed Vicar of Oswestry in 1599, and the renowned Victorian architect G E Street substantially renovating the church between 1872-74. The church and town receive their names from Saint Oswald, the Christian King of Northumbria, who was killed at the Battle of Maserfield in 642 AD by the pagan King of Mercia, a mere 400 metres from the site of the present church. One of Oswald’s severed arms was allegedly snatched by a raven and dropped “a bowshot” away, causing a well to spring up that would be visited for centuries for healing and still exists today. The present-day name of Oswestry is a corruption of the original name Oswald’s Tree, which derives from Oswald's body being nailed to a tree in mock crucifixion. In Gray’s design, a large O fills the central four windows, a continuum (symbolising eternity) depicted at its centre, and a tree branching out across the central lights. Within them are also small roundels representing groups connected with Oswestry, including: Cambrian Railways, Round Table, Royal British Legion, Shropshire County Council, Oswestry Town Council, Rotary International, Lions International, Women’s Royal Voluntary Service, Orthopaedic Hospital, Royal Artillery, and Oswestry Borough Council. This window was installed and dedicated in 2004.

    Harold Pinter and Antonia Fraser married in London in November 1980, five years after they first met, and only a few months after Gray commenced designing this impressive stained glass window for their house at 52 Campden Hill Square in London. Her notes surrounding the design give insights into her process and the themes and imagery she wished the design to contain such as: Harold and Antonia’s initials, cricket, hollyhocks, butterflies, medallions of test matches.

      Acrylic paint 74 x 50 cm Signed and dated lower right. Souttar was a Scottish painter and printmaker known for her images of town- and cityscapes. In the early 1960s, she was commissioned to produce a series of prints of the Cambridge colleges. She captures the modernity and optimism of 1960s Cambridge; the fact that a female artist was commissioned to create the prints reflects the changing attitudes of the University towards women.       Original vintage poster 76 x 49 cm Hans Schleger was born in Germany. After the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule. After working in Berlin, he moved to New York in 1924 and began to work as a graphic designer. He returned to Berlin in 1929 and began working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer, who introduced him to Jack Beddington (the head of advertising at Shell Mex BP). He moved to London following the rise of Hitler and produced a series of posters for Shell Mex. During the Second World War he worked for the British Government. He later taught at the Chicago Institute of Design and subsequently designed the trademarks of the John Lewis Partnership, Penguin, Deutsche Bank, and the Edinburgh Festival.     Oil on board 16.5.x 20.5 cm Signed and dated lower right. Naive scene of school children in a Venetian square in a distinctive 1970s frame. Brenda King was born in Cumbria in 1934. She enrolled at the Lancaster College of Art from 1950 to 1954 before enrolling at the Royal Academy from 1954 to 1957, indeed, going on to exhibit frequently at the RA summer exhibition. She moved to Cornwall in 1975 with her landscape painter husband Jeremy King (b.1933), and the pair shared a studio in St Just, Lands End. Her distinctively naive and playful style, often capturing incidental figures in quaint, pastoral British scenes, is said to have been strongly influenced by the oils and watercolours of Helen Bradley (1900-1979), another Lancastrian.     The Church of St Andrew and St Mary in Pitminster was built on the site of an earlier Saxon church around 1300 and was later added to in the 15th century and restored in 1869 by the prolific English Gothic Revival architect, Sir Gilbert Scott. Gray’s design for the east window of the church, featuring a colourful Christian depiction of Christ calling Andrew to be his disciple; the window features the Sea of Galilee, the heavenly city and fishing symbols, accompanied by the line, ‘Follow me, I will make you fishers of men’, from Matthew 4:19. The window was installed in 1989.

      Hand-coloured engraving 23 x 33 cm Joseph Constantine Stadler was a prolific German émigré engraver of images after his contemporaries - here, 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist Joseph Farington. Stadler's engravings are wide-ranging in subject matter and include landscapes, seascapes and portraits, as well as military, sporting and decorative subjects. Stadler was employed by the leading print publisher of the time, John Boydell. Stadler lived in Knightsbridge when he died at the age of 73. Joseph Farington was born in Lancashire and went to study with Richard Wilson in London in 1763. In 1764, 1765, and 1766 he won "premiums" from the Society of Artists for his landscape drawing; he became a member in 1765. He joined the Royal Academy when it was founded in 1769 and was elected an ARA in 1783 and an RA in 1785. Farington contributed works to the Academy's exhibitions every year until 1801, but only occasionally between 1801 and 1813. He was an active member of the Academy and sat on several important committees, including the one which determined where artworks would be hung during the exhibitions. In 1793 he became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and helped establish the British Institution. Condition: very good.     St Mary’s Church, Chirk, Design for Stained Glass Window Dedicated to the Royal British Legion (1992)

    The first stone church in Chirk was erected during the early 11th Century by the Normans, however, the site of St Mary’s church is originally thought to be a llan—a Welsh phrase that denotes a walled enclosure containing a chapel, hermit’s huts and burials—dedicated to Saint Tysilio. The church was re-dedicated to Saint Mary in the late 15th or early 16th century and remained part of the Church of England until the disestablishment of the Welsh Church in 1921. Gray’s stained glass design commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in her inimitably modern style and features the archetypal motif of red poppies, scattered across the three window panels. The leek, rose, thistle, and shamrock roundels nod to the key symbols of the British Isles. The window was installed and dedicated by the Archbishop of Wales in 1994.

    The Divinity School, Oxford (1675)

      Engraving 33 x 41 cm David Loggan's view of Oxford's medieval Divinity School, which was once the beating heart of theological studies at the University. Of particular interest here is the trompe l'oeil scroll of torn paper which frames the view. Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' also includes an engraving of Winchester College (Winchester and New College share William of Wykeham as their founder) whilst the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder, Henry VIII, with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views from this era required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist; it was not until 1783 that it became possible for artists to ascend via hot air balloons and view the scenes they were depicting from above. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in Roman numerals in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in much smaller numbers. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK, 'Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne' (circa 1708). The contemporary artist Andrew Ingamells (born 1956) has produced a highly-acclaimed series of etchings which bring Loggan’s original vision up to date.       Pencil drawing 23 x 53 cm A drawing of Stromness, Orkney, with two figures in the foreground. The buildings seem tiny in comparison to the huge cliffs overlooking the town. Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS ROI RBA SMA was the son of Oliver Hall RA. He was born Grahame Hall (his father was the Royal Academician Oliver Hall, who taught his son to paint from an early age) but adopted the name Claude Muncaster in 1922, hoping to strike out on his own and dissociate his career from that of his father. His career as a landscape painter began when he was fifteen; he spent the 1920s and 30s travelling the world with his sketchbook by boat. Muncaster’s primary choice of subject matter came from a genuine love of the sea. He made several long-distance sea voyages, including one around the Horn as a deckhand in the windjammer Olivebank in 1931, which he described in ‘Rolling Round the Horn’, published in 1933. Armed with a sketchbook, his aim was to be able to ‘paint ships and the sea with greater authority’. This he certainly achieved, perfectly capturing the limpid first light of morning over the Port of Aden, the choppy rain-grey waters of the Bay of Biscay and a streak of sunlight through gathering storm clouds at dusk in Exeter. He became an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1931 and was a founder member, and later President, of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. When the Second World War broke out, Muncaster joined the Royal Naval Reserves, training as a navigator before going on to advise on the camouflage of ships. He also worked as an official war artist. In ‘Still Morning at Aden’ (1944) he depicts Allied warships in this safe anchorage in the Middle East; the back is stamped with Admiralty approval. In 1946-7 he was commissioned by the Queen to produce watercolours of the royal residences (some of which are available below); the Duke of Edinburgh, in a foreword to a biography of Muncaster, recalls looking at these and considering the artist’s ‘unerring instinct for a subject’, his sense of atmosphere. Other commissions included large panoramas of the Thames and of Bradford. His career also included work as an etcher, illustrator, writer, lecturer and broadcaster, and his paintings can be found in the Royal Academy, Tate, National Maritime Museum Cornwall, National Railway Museum and Royal Air Force Museum.   • Switzerland of Tomorrow Welcomes You Today (1964)

    Lithographic poster 152.4cm x 63.5 cm 1964   Original "Switzerland of Tomorrow" poster from the 1964 Swiss National Exhibition. As well as a brilliantly-designed futuristic poster printed in rich colours, it is a real piece of Swiss (and European) history. The poster is the English-language edition of a tourism-encouraging poster produced in several languages to welcome international visitors to an exhibition of Swiss innovation. Switzerland holds such an event four times per century, and the exhibitions often act as a portrait of contemporary culture, design, and politics. The 1964 National Exhibition in Lausanne offered a rather different representation of Switzerland from previous exhibitions. This was partly the result of its being held during one of the tensest periods of the Cold War; the attitudes of the Swiss were changing as the twentieth century progressed, as was the case for most Europeans, and the shadow of war had encouraged many citizens, businesses, and public bodies to reexamine their values. At "Expo 64", the nickname for that year's exhibition, the 'Gulliver Project' was introduced. The exhibition organisers made use of the character Gulliver (from Swift's 'Gulliver's Travels' to assess visitors' attitudes to daily life. A small questionnaire written by "Gulliver" was given to visitors, asking them questions about their societal attitudes, domestic lives, and work ethics, such as "Can you be a good Swiss and get up at 9am?". The theatre director Charles Apothéloz suggested having Gulliver ask these questions so as to make the questionnaire seem less serious, and to encourage people to answer truthfully. The questionnaire answers were compiled and analysed, but never published, as had been Apothéloz's initial intention.     Christ Church and New College Beagles in Northumberland (1967)

      Lithograph 28 x 38 cm Signed in pencil lower right. A classic Carr hunting print of the Christ Church (now the Christ Church and Farley Hill) Beagles, and the Magdalen and New College Beagles, on their annual trip to Northumberland. Tom Carr was a painter of hunting and racing scenes. He was born in Durham and worked as a blacksmith at Preistman Collieries, before sustaining an injury which saw him admitted to hospital, where he took up drawing and painting. He decided to become an artist and went to study at King's College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, using the compensation money from his injury to pay for his tuition. Carr became known for his energetic hunting scenes, and earned the patronage of the Dukes of Beaufort and Northumberland. Condition: generally very good.       Engraving 33 x 45 cm An engraving illustrating the magnificent facade of Christ Church from St Aldate's, dominated by Tom Tower. John Dadley was a British portraitist and engraver. Edward Dayes was an English watercolour painter and mezzotint engraver. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786, when he showed a portrait and views of Waltham Cross and Canterbury. In the three following years he exhibited both miniatures and landscapes. He continued to exhibit at the Academy regularly until the year of his death, contributing a total of 64 works.       Engraving 35 x 44 cm An engraving illustrating the pinnacles of Magdalen Tower and the Bridge below. James Basire II was a British engraver, son of James Basire I, also a celebrated engraver. In 1802 he became Engraver to the Society of Antiquaries. Edward Dayes was an English watercolour painter and mezzotint engraver. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786, when he showed a portrait and views of Waltham Cross and Canterbury. In the three following years he exhibited both miniatures and landscapes. He continued to exhibit at the Academy regularly until the year of his death, contributing a total of 64 works.     Ilford War Memorial design

      Pencil on paper 15 x 10 cm Initialled lower right in pencil. Hallward's design is for Ilford's memorial for the fallen of the First World War. Ilford had raised £20,000 for a commemorative project and opted to build a garden and a monument (there had been discussions about opening a children's hospital, but it was decided that upkeep of the hospital over time could not be guaranteed; a wing at the local hospital, combined with the memorial and garden, was deemed to be the better option). This drawing is a proposed sketch; the final monument – whilst retaining the celtic cross – is simpler, but also incorporates a fine monument of a soldier presenting arms by the sculptor Newberry Abbott Trent (best known for the reliefs on 3 St James’s Square, London, depicting London street scenes; and those on the entrance doors to The Adelphi Building on The Strand, depicting) industrial scenes. Reginald Hallward was born on the Isle of Wight, and was a painter, poet, glassmaker and book designer. He is best known for his stained glass window designs and the tempera murals he painted in several churches. A great exponent of the English Arts and Crafts movement, he often used black paint for outlines, rather than leaded glass. Ortega's poster for the Spanish tourist board promotes the Romanesque art of Spain. This edition of the poster was produced for circulation in Germany. José García Ortega was born in Arroba de los Montes and was a member of the Communist Party. He worked as a painter and sculptor, studying at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 1953 he went to France to study art, funded by a French government scholarship. He returned to Spain throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and became a commercially successful artist. Rooted firmly in the classical period, he lived a Georgian life, refusing to have electricity in his Georgian house – until his wife finally insisted. Professor of Architecture at UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture from 1929-1955, this was evacuated to Cambridge during the war and he became a fellow of St Catharine’s College. Amongst his other achievements, Richardson was President of the RA, editor of Architect’s Journal and founder of the Georgian Group. For pleasure he painted architectural fantasies; capriccios of buildings he pictured in his mind.     Proposed alterations for Stables for Mrs Mallowan (Agatha Christie)

      Pencil on tracing paper 41 x 30 cm Signed in red crayon lower right. A smart architectural design to improve famed author Agatha Christie's stable block. Christie became Lady Mallowan when she married her second husband, Sir Max Edgar Lucien Mallowan. The church was bombed in 1941 and gutted by fire; subsequently, the church was a ruin open to the sky for over 20 years. It was saved by Lady Parker of Waddington, who formed the Friends of St John's in 1962 to raise money and restore the church to its former glory - a reconstruction in the style of the church's original architect, Thomas Archer. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC. Condition: generally very good.     Original poster c. 1943 Printed for HMSO by J Weiner Ltd, London for the Ministry of Aircraft Production Produced by the Bayly-Souster advertising agency, Fleet Street Provenance the estate of Ernest Bendell-Bayly The waste-not-want-not campaign of World War 2 in the UK had to tackle waste at all levels. Here workers in aircraft factories are encouraged to work carefully in order to avoid creating products that had to be scrapped. Not only were the raw materials scrapped, but also the valuable hours of workers' time involved. When Lord Beaverbrook commenced his term as Minister of Aircraft Production in May 1940 it was an industry beset with problems. Aircraft parts were produced in sufficient numbers, but assembly into flyable aircraft proved more challenging – the Castle Bromwich Spitfire factory had not produced a single completed aircraft by this point. Moreover the RAF central depots had large supplies of aircraft that had not been issued to squadrons. Once this was all brought under Beaverbrook’s control, aircraft production increased rapidly. During the Battle of Britain, the British production of fighter aircraft was two-and-a-half times that of Germany. Britain had 644 operable fighters at the start of July 1940 – when the Battle of Britain began – against the German 725. By the end of October 1940, when the German offensive finished, British fighter aircraft had – despite significant losses – increased to 732 whilst the Germans were left with just 275. To achieve this great productivity increase the Ministry was run on informal grounds; few notes were kept; staff members had few formal roles. He is believed to have trained as a rolling-press printer, but he was at heart an historian granted a sinecure in the Customs House by Queen Elizabeth to indulge his passion, later becoming a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. His first maps were historical, of the Holy Land 'Canaan as it was Possessed both in Abraham and Israels Dayes' and of England and Ireland recording 'all their Civill Warres since the Conquest'. In 1611 he published his 'Hostory of Great Britaine' which he regarded as his magnum opus, but it was the companion atlas 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' that - as the first printed atlas of Great Britain - sealed his reputation. William Rogers engraved the first map, 'the County Palatine of Chester' in about 1600, but following his untimely death the task of engraving was passed to Jodocus Hondius of Amsterdam. By 1612 the atlas was complete, the maps famed for their decorative elements. Many have town plans - Britain's first series of such plans - and descriptive text was printed to the reverse until the 1676 edition. Later printings (up until 1770) were issued without this text. By 1627 it has become a part of a world atlas 'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World'. During the 17th century the plates passed through the hands of a series of publishers, the 1676 edition of Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell being regarded as its high point with the inclusion for the first time of a series of important maps.       Watercolour 8 x 9 cm Laurence Dunn was an artist known for his depictions of ships. He grew up in Devon, where he practised drawing passing ships, and went on to study at the Central School of Art. He then worked for shipbuilding firm John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, where he contributed to the design of the Royal Yacht. During the Second World War, Dunn worked in naval intelligence. In the early 1960s, he created many line drawings of Atlantic ocean liners. The World Ship Society published the following obituary for Laurence Dunn in 2006: DUNN, Laurence. [December 15 2006 — Lloyds List] Many readers will be saddened by the death of well-known marine artist and writer Laurence Dunn in his 97th year. A man of encyclopaedic knowledge, he began his lifelong love of ships in Brixham, where he meticulously recorded passing traffic with the exquisitely accurate line drawings which later became something of a trademark. While studying at London’s Central School of Art his work was noticed by the Southern Railway, which commissioned profiles of its fleet, and this in turn led to work for Orient Line, where he also designed the well-known corn-coloured hull, and later Thorneycroft, where he helped with shaping draft plans for a new royal yacht. During the second world was he worked for naval intelligence at the Admiralty, where his technique did much to improve recognition standards, and greatly expanded his shipping clientele, becoming personally known to many chairmen. As well as the shipping press he worked for mainstream publications such as Everybody’s, Sphere and the upmarket comic Eagle. Through his many contacts he enjoyed going to sea in a great variety of ships from aircraft carriers to colliers. Laurence wrote several books, starting with ship recognition titles which introduced new standards of layout, but his best known work was probably Passenger Liners, which was widely taken up by the travel trade. His love of Greece, where he was an early publicist of island cruising, let to involvement in reshaping various passenger liners beginning with Greek Line’s OLYMPIA. In later life he designed several sets of shipping stamps for the Crown Agents, produced photographic volumes on Thames and Mediterranean shipping and still found time to enjoy the passing Thames traffic. Our sympathies go to his wife Jennifer, who provided succour to the many ship lovers who beat a path to the welcoming door of their Gravesend home. Condition: very good.       Aeroplane identification poster, published 1942 63 x 47 cm A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have several in this series; view them here - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the United States Navy''s main carrier-based scout/dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944. The SBD was also flown by the United States Marine Corps, both from land air bases and aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bomber that delivered the fatal blows to the Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. During Midway, four squadrons of Dauntless dive bombers attacked and sank or fatally damaged all four Japanese fleet carriers present, disabling three of them in the span of just six minutes (Akagi, Kaga, and Sōryū) and, later in the day, Hiryū.     Queen Street, Exeter

      Watercolour 25 x 33 cm Inscribed in Osman's hand on old mount (visible in the gallery of photographs). Osman's view of Queen Street in Exeter, complete with modish pedestrians and vehicles typical of the 1930s. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC. Condition: generally very good; some age toning.       Watercolour and ink 33 x 50 cm Signed and dated 1958 lower right (dated August 23rd to reverse). A watercolour of the Villa Malcontenta in Venice, nestled between willow trees. The River Brenta flows serenely in the foreground. Villa Foscari is a patrician villa in Mira, near Venice, northern Italy, designed by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. It is also known as La Malcontenta ("The Discontented"), a nickname which - according to a legend - it received when the spouse of one of the Foscaris was locked up in the house because she allegedly did not live up to her conjugal duty. Karl Hagedorn was a painter and illustrator. He was educated in Berlin, and at the Manchester School of Technology, Manchester School of Art, and Slade School of Fine Art (where he later taught), before training in Paris under Maurice Denis. Hagedorn showed regularly at the Society of Modern Painters in Manchester, and then (from 1913 onwards), at the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club. He became a British citizen in 1914, and served in the British Army during World War I. During World War II, he sold pictures of military subjects to the United Kingdom Government's War Artists' Advisory Committee.       Lithographic poster 32 x 26 cm "If you sometimes wonder whether you still enjoy being battered about on a Sunday afternoon quite as much as you did, why not give a thought to refereeing - which would allow you to keep up a connection with the game of games, and do a very useful job for it too." Fougasse was a British cartoonist. He was art editor of Punch between 1937 and 1949, and subsequently editor until 1953. He is best known for his ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ series of posters, and the other posters for the Ministry of Information and London Transport. As the Second World War progressed, the Ministry of Information’s poster campaign had become less and less effective. There were posters instructing the population to save old clothes for rags, turn off the lights, save food, dig for victory, watch out for spies, and keep calm and carry on. With this instruction overload, the population had ceased paying attention to the posters. Fougasse noticed this, and offered his services unpaid to the Ministry of Information, with a view to bringing a touch of humour to the posters. His amusing designs with pithy captions, reminiscent of newspaper cartoons, helped to get the Ministry's messages across in a novel way.
    Fougasse's distinctive poster style, with the red border, was subsequently adopted by other Ministry artists.

    Lithographic poster (2014) 99 x 61 cm The poster features Hans J Wegner's famous 'Y chair', also known as the 'Wishbone chair'. Carl Hansen & Søn commissioned the poster from a photograph by Salomonsen, a 1960s photographer. The stylish and typically Danish woman examining the chair marks it as a piece of typically Danish design. The chair was known as "The Chair" when it was used in the TV-transmitted debate between John F Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1959.     'Foot of a Statue'

    Plaster 9 x 19 x 13 cm   Paolozzi’s fascination with anatomy, machine parts, and the idiom of classical statuary is evident in his modernist sculptural forms. Foot of a Statue suggests the foot of an ancient Colossus - severed from the rest of the body, it becomes a symbol of fragmentation, of a civilisation’s decline. Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi CBE RA was a Scottish artist, known for his sculpture and graphic works. He is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of pop art. Paolozzi studied at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1943, briefly at Saint Martin's School of Art in 1944, and then at the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London from 1944 to 1947, after which he worked in Paris. While in Paris from 1947 to 1949, Paolozzi became acquainted with Alberto Giacometti, Jean Arp, Constantin Brâncuși, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger. This period became an important influence for his later work. For example, the influence of Giacometti and many of the original Surrealists he met in Paris can be felt in the group of lost-wax sculptures made by Paolozzi in the mid-1950s. Their surfaces, studded with found objects and machine parts, were to gain him recognition. He taught sculpture and ceramics at several institutions, including the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (1960–62), University of California, Berkeley (in 1968) and at the Royal College of Art. Paolozzi had a long association with Germany, having worked in Berlin from 1974 as part of the Berlin Artist Programme of the German Academic Exchange Programme. He was a professor at the Fachhochschule in Cologne from 1977 to 1981, and later taught sculpture at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. Paolozzi was fond of Munich and many of his works and concept plans were developed in a studio he kept there, including the mosaics of the Tottenham Court Road Station in London. He took a stab at industrial design in the 1970s with a 500-piece run of the upscale Suomi tableware by Timo Sarpaneva that Paolozzi decorated for the German Rosenthal porcelain maker's Studio Linie.     Watercolour 19 x 29 cm Signed and inscribed to reverse. Here Muncaster records a farmhouse in the Market Town of Shap in Cumbria. This remote village has had a market charter since the seventeenth century. Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS, ROI, RBA, SMA was the son of Oliver Hall RA. At the age of fifteen his career as a landscape painter began, and he soon took to the seas, spending the 1920s and 30s travelling the world with his sketchbook in a series of vessels. With the outbreak of war and he joined the RNVR training as a navigator. Having left school at fifteen his mathematics was very weak and it was a relief for all when his artistic talents meant he was recruited as a camofleur. A master of capturing seascapes he was therefore able to hide huge ships ‘in plain sight’ with clever disguises. After the war he painted for the Royal Family and was a frequent guest at Sandringham. Claude Muncaster was a watercolourist known for his landscapes and maritime scenes. He was born Grahame Hall, the son of the Royal Academician Oliver Hall who taught his son to paint from an early age; Grahame first exhibited his work aged 15 and a few years later was showing at the RA. However, he adopted the name Claude Muncaster in 1922 to dissociate his career from that of his father. Muncaster’s primary choice of subject matter came from a genuine love of the sea. He made several long-distance sea voyages, including one around the Horn as a deckhand in the windjammer Olivebank in 1931, which he described in ‘Rolling Round the Horn’, published in 1933. Armed with a sketchbook, his aim was to be able to ‘paint ships and the sea with greater authority’. This he certainly achieved, perfectly capturing the limpid first light of morning over the Port of Aden, the choppy rain-grey waters of the Bay of Biscay and a streak of sunlight through gathering storm clouds at dusk in Exeter. He became an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1931 and was a founder member, and later President, of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. During the Second World War, Muncaster served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) from 1940-44, training as a navigator before going on to advise on the camouflage of ships, and also worked as an official war artist. In ‘Still Morning at Aden’ (1944) he depicts Allied warships in this safe anchorage in the Middle East; the back is stamped with Admiralty approval. In 1946-7 he was commissioned by the Queen to produce watercolours of the royal residences at Windsor, Sandringham and Balmoral; the Duke of Edinburgh, in a foreword to a biography of Muncaster, recalls looking at these and considering the artist’s ‘unerring instinct for a subject’, his sense of atmosphere. Other commissions included large panoramas of the Thames and of Bradford. His career also included work as an etcher, illustrator, writer, lecturer and broadcaster, and his paintings can be found in the Royal Academy, Tate, National Maritime Museum Cornwall, National Railway Museum and Royal Air Force Museum. A copy of this print is in the National Trust's collection at Anglesea Abbey, from Lord Fairhaven's extraordinary collection of views of Windsor Castle.

    Original vintage poster 100 x 62 cm Commissioned by the Ministère des Travaux Publics et des Transports and the Commissariat général au Tourisme. Printed in France, by and for the French Government. Printed by Braun & Cie, Mulhouse-Paris. This poster, featuring a Utrillo painting of Reims Cathedral, was printed by the French tourist board to encourage holidays to France. Utrillo's depiction of Reims is highly post-impressionist, with thick layers of impasto and an inventive colour palette. Maurice Utrillo was a French painter who specialised in post-impressionist cityscapes, particularly of Montmartre, where he lived. His mother was Suzanne Valadon, an artist's model who sat for several French painters, including Renoir. Utrillo's father is unknown, though the painter Miquel Utrillo acknowledged him as his own some years after his birth. Valedon became a painter herself after several years of modelling, and was mentored by Degas. She encouraged her son to become a painter, and he received positive critical attention in the 1910s, followed by international popularity in the following decade. He was awarded the Cross of the Légion d'Honneur in 1928 and is today known for his poetic depictions of Paris, especially Montmartre. He is buried there, in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent, having suffered from mental illness and alcoholism for most of his life. Condition: generally very good; a few tiny repaired edge tears. Between 1902 and 1904 William Nicholson lived in Woodstock; during this period he made several architectural studies of Oxford's colleges and other University buildings. Sir William Nicholson was a British painter and printmaker. He is also known as an illustrator, author of children’s books, stained glass designer, and theatre set designer. Condition: very good.   • Johannes 'Joan' Blaeu (1596 - 1673)

    Comitatus Northumbria, Vernacular Northumberland (1662)

    Engraving with later hand-colouring 43 x 52 cm A decorative map of Northumberland by the celebrated Dutch mapmaker and artist Joan Blaeu, (son of the cartographer Willem Blaeu). Crests of the local gentry appear in the top right hand corner. Blaeu moved to Amsterdam in 1920 to join the family firm of mapmakers. In 1635, the business published the Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus in two volumes - the largest and most expensive book published in the seventeenth century, and the venture for which the Blaeu were most famed. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638; Joan became the official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company, as his father had been before him.     Architectural Design I

      Pencil, ink, whitening 72 x 106 cm An architectural design for a public building, with room numbers labelled in red. Osman's detailed and precise mark-making makes for an elegant and artistic design. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. He studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture; he was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group), and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC.
