You can be sure of Shell
Chanter's Folly and Dry Dock, Appledore
Lithographic poster for Shell Mex BP (1937) 30x44" Provenance: the family of the artist, by descent. Condition: A/A- backed to linen. Click here for biographical details and other works by the artist. Shell produced a large series of posters in the 1920s and 30s to encourage motorists to use their products in that early and golden age of motoring. They often commission artists not known for their commercial art, so their posters very often featured large and dramatic views of the British countryside and landmarks, inspiring motorists to travel further afield. Here the Ellises have taken a well-known landmark and applied avant-garde artistic techniques so stylising the view, turning, e.g. the clouds into an array of angular v-shaped blocks. Thomas Burnard Chanter (1797-1874) was owner of a fleet of sailing vessels and erected a signal tower ('Chanter's Folly') to give him advance notice of his vessels' arrival. It was demolished in 1952. The dry dock - Richmond dry dock - was built in 1853 and designed to hold two 'large' ships. It exists today and is Grade II listed. Pencil drawing, squared for transfer. 40x51cm If you are interested email info@manningfineart.co.uk or call us on 07929 749056. The Telecinema was built for the 1951 Festival of Britain, situated between Waterloo Station and the Royal Festival Hall. Whilst press releases referred to the Telecinema, the outside of the building proclaimed Telekinema. Wells Coates were the architect, creating - in the words of Today's Cinema - "A fly-away linear design [with a ] gay façade and bold modern stare". Seating 410 people it was the first cinema in Britain with both 3D sound - provided by an array of speakers behind the screen and allowing the sound to come from the direction of the person speaking - and 3D vision. It was demolished in 1957 when the National Film Theatre moved to its current location - renamed in 2007 as BFI Southbank. -

Draughts Eat Coal - Stop All Draughts! Save Fuel for Production
Lithographic poster 76 x 50cm Issued by the Ministry of Fuel and Power Printed for HM Stationery Office by J Weiner Ltd, London WC1 Fuel was needed for production of munitions and machinery, as well as to drive the machinery. The population was therefore exhorted not to waste fuel. Successful Home Front propaganda posters, as Fougasse proved, needed to amuse the watcher; cartoonists were accordingly highly regarded for this task. -
Parliamentary Recruiting Committee Which? Have you a Reason for not Enlisting - Or only an Excuse for not Enlisting. Now!
Original lithographic poster c. 1914 75 x 50cm Published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, London Printed by the Abbey Press 32 & 34 Great Peter St Westminster SW Before conscription was introduced at the beginning of 1916, recruitment into the British Army was all by way of volunteering. Lord Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, wanted to recruit almost 100,000 men per month and by the end of 1915 the supply of volunteers - despite excellent posters such as this one - was drying up. -
Design for Bianchini Ferier, Lyon for a scarf
Pen and Gouache c. 1940 75cm x 75cm "The prowess of our R.A.F. has not taken long to show a real effectiveness. The encounters of the last few days has sown to our enemy our supremacy. Difficult missions have been crowned with success by our different units. Flying sometime above 7000 feet in clouded skies surprising the enemy at a low altitude and exposing themselves to the enemy to protect the army. Their courage never falters." In the months prior to the Fall of France in May 1940 - before the Battle of Britain began - the RAF was in action in the skies above France and this design for a scarf depicts aeroplanes and pilots of the RAF. -

Sun Valley was the site of the world's first chairlifts as single-seat chairs were installed in 1936 for the opening. The poster is believed to depict Sigfried 'Sigi' Engl, an Austrian who became director of Sun Valley Ski School in 1952 and made it famous for his innovative instructional methods. Sir Edward Brantwood Maufe KBE, R.A, F.R.I.B.A. (1882-1974)
Lloyds Bank, Notting Hill Gate (c.1930)
Ink and wash 60 x 37 cm In original white-painted frame. Signed 'Edward Maufe, Architect' lower right; also signed 'Drawn by H A Townsend'. This bank, designed by Maufe, still stands; contrary to the flourishes of the architectural design, however, it was executed in a slightly more restrained style. Sadly, a gratuitously unattractive modern front now defaces the front of the original bank building. Maufe is probably most famous for his Guildford Cathedral, the Air Forces Memorial, and his work for the Imperial War Graves Commission, for which he received his knighthood in 1954. He served a five-year apprenticeship under William Pite and then attended St John’s College, Oxford as an undergraduate. He then studied Design at the Architectural Association. His architecture is notable for its strong arts and crafts influence; this likely arose from his having lived in The Red House, Bexleyheath, which Philip Webb designed for the most famous of the Arts and Crafts designers: William Morris. John Anderson Bell (1809-1865)
King's College Cambridge Chapel Interior
Signed and indistinctly dated Watercolour c. 1840 53x39cm Bell was born in Glasgow; his father was James Bell, advocate and his sister Jane Cross Simpson the hymn-writer and poet. Following Edinburgh University Bell spent 1829 and 1830 in Rome as an art student, returning to the UK to serve his articles as an architect with Rickman & Hutchinson, the gothic revivalist practice in Birmingham. Subsequently he practised in Edinburgh, designing country houses, and the Victoria Buildings in Glasgow for the Conservative politician Archibald Orr Ewing in Scottish baronial style. Thirty of the engravings in John Le Keux's magnificent 1847 book Memorials of Cambridge are from paintings by Bell; this particular painting is believed to have been painted at the same time, although not published. The Great East Window depicted in the painting was created between 1526 and 1531 by Gaylon Hone and three partners (one Flemish and two English) and - together with the other sixteen they made - represent some of the finest stained glass of their period. Here Bell has captured the colours and the light of the window in almost magical fashion. It is an interesting view as it records the chapel in the mid nineteenth century. In 1968 the installation of Rubens' the Adoration of the Magi as an altarpiece involved the lowering of the Sanctuary floor through removal of the steps clearly visible in Bell's view and also removal of the seventeenth century panelling around the walls. It is still felt that the chapel would have been better left 'unimproved' and without the Reubens, though the form recorded by Bell had itself been improved in 1906 when Detmar Blow designed a reredos. Blow's reredos remains in storage in the College. The East window may be viewed in high resolution in the series of seven short films - accompanied by music by King's alumnus Francis Grier - entitled Sword in the Soul. -

Gideon Yates (?1790-?1840)
1831 View on The Thames with London Bridge from the East Side showing Fishmonger's Hall, The Church of St Magnus the Martyr and St. Paul's Cathedral.
c.1831 29x54cm Watercolour unsigned Provenance: The Parker Gallery LIttle is known of the life of Yates. Even his date of death is disputed with some sources putting it at 1837. What is known is that he spent most of his working life in London, producing many detailed views of The Thames such as this one. His style is very distinctive, and this large and impressive view of London Bridge is a typical view. He is thought to have lived in Lancaster in 1811, and to have travelled widely throughout Britain and the Continent. His works are in public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum. In this view, Thames barges are in the foreground with their distinctive brown sails. A steamship proceeds along the middle of The Thames. The first steamboat patented was in 1729, by John Allen an English physician. However it was not until 1783 that the first steam-powered ship, "Pyroscaphe," was demonstrated on the River Saône. By 1788 John Fitch in Philadelphia was operating a commercial service along the Delaware River were built in the United States. The first sea-going steamboat was the "Experiment" built by Richard Wright in 1813; by this point river services were becoming well established although it was not until 1815 that The Thames acquired its first successful services with "Margery" and "Thames" arriving from the Clyde where they had been in service for some years. Margate and Gravesend were the main destinations. The steamboat in this view is a paddlesteamer, with two side wheels. At the north end of London Bridge (on the far side from the viewer) is Fishmongers' Hall, St Magnus the Martyr Church is visible on the near side of the bridge, and St Paul's Cathedral is visible beyond. UK Government Art Collection item 6701 is another view of The Thames by Yates, also from The Parker Gallery. If you are interested email info@manningfineart.co.uk or call us on 07929 749056. -

Andrew Ingamells Jesus College, Cambridge
Etching and aquatint 58 x 84 cm Signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of 150. Inspired by David Loggan’s celebrated engraving of the College in 1680, this view of Jesus College was the first of Ingamells’ series of views of Oxford and Cambridge. It took six months to complete and has long-since sold out from the publisher. The Master and Fellows of the College own both the original drawing, which the engraving is based upon, and the copper etching plate used to make the prints. Ingamells trained at St Albans School of Art and the London College of Printing, subsequently working as a graphic designer and illustrator. Based in London, he began making drawings of the buildings and landscapes of London. Ingamells' work is in many public collections including those of the Tate Gallery, The National Trust, The Paul Mellon Centre for British Art, and the City of London Guildhall Library. His pictures are also in several private collections, including those of various Oxford and Cambridge colleges, HRH King Charles III, and Shell Oil. The artist is currently part-way through his epic project to record all the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, a project undertaken in homage to David Loggan. -
John Piper C.H. (1903-1992)
Garn Fawr
Watercolour and gouache on paper; executed 1969 37 x 54 cm Titled and dated lower left ‘Garn Fawr 12 VIII 69′; signed lower right. It was Piper's wife, Myfanwy - whom he met whilst she lived in London with her Welsh family - who first introduced Piper to West Wales in the 1930s. The Pembrokeshire landscape became his muse, as it also did for Graham Sutherland, another great neo-romantic painter. Having lived in various parts of Wales during the post-war period, the Pipers bought a cottage by Garn Fawr, on the Pembrokeshire Coas, in 1962. The volcanic outcrop was the site of an Iron Age hill fort, and had also been used as a high-viewpoint during the First World War. Piper started out as a mostly abstract artist, but by the 1960s he had moved more towards realism, often focusing on depicting architecture. Here, Piper paints the wet Welsh countryside. Each of the fields is complete with its own crop; the different plants and flowers are designated by characteristic splashes of dark colour. Fred Mayor (British, 1865-1916)
Magdalen College, Oxford
Watercolour and pencil 12x15" In this painting, Mayor catches Magdalen in his usual impressionistic style, with an effective use of splashes of colour and careful use of lighting. Born near Ripon in Yorkshire, Mayor was educated at St Edmund's School Canterbury where he excelled both at drawing and cricket. The former became his profession and he began with a studio in Chiswick shared with Frank Brangwyn. In 1886 he followed the well-trodden path of spending time in Paris, studying at the Academie Julian, and also meeting Wilson Steer and Walter Sickert who influenced his work and were lifelong friends of his. In 1888 at the age of just twenty-one a painting of his was accepted at the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1899 he moved to join the artists' colony in Staithes, Yorkshire, where other artists included Harold and Dame Laura Knight. He met, and subsequently married, another artist - Sheffield-born Hannah Hoyland. Married life began by eloping to Montreuil-sur-Mer in northern France where Mayor developed his characteristic impressionistic style. He died in 1916 whilst undergoing a routine operation for asthma, which was required before he could become a war artist. -
