Fuel was needed for production of munitions and machinery, as well as to drive the machinery. The population was therefore exhorted not to waste fuel. Successful Home Front propaganda posters, as Fougasse proved, needed to amuse the watcher; cartoonists were accordingly highly regarded for this task.
