See Britain from Her Roads
Original vintage poster 77 x 50 cm Signed lower left in the plate. Issued by the Tilling Group of Omnibus Companies. Jones' poster, with its two happy swans in the foreground, encourages us to travel Britain via coach (the coach tour was becoming ever more popular in 1950s Britain). The text reads: "You can travel anywhere in Britain by coach and bus ... ask for details of express coach services and touring holidays at any travel agent or Victoria Coach Station S.W.1." Barbara Jones was an English artist and writer. She studied at Croydon High School and then the Royal College of Art (where her contemporaries included John Piper, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and Edward Ardizzone), beginning in the Department of Engraving but transferring to the Department of Mural Decoration in her second year. She illustrated the pamphlet 'Bombed Churches as War Memorials' in 1945. Jones worked on several notable murals after the war, including for the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946, and the Enterprise Scotland exhibition in 1947. She also did commercial work for many companies, including P&O Ferries. In 1951 Jones co-curated Black Eyes and Lemonade, an exhibition of craft, folk, and popular objects at the Whitechapel Gallery. She was a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and a member of the Society of Authors. Condition: generally very good; backed to linen; pin holes to corners. This charming and cheering poster, featuring a blue sailing boat on a sandy beach with brightly-coloured houses behind, encourages us to explore France by train and make a sojourn to Brittany. Jacques Nathan Garamond (born Jacques Nathan) was a French graphic designer. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs and became the Director of Contemporary Architecture there. He then began his career as a graphic designer, specialising in posters and commercial illustrations. He was a founding member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, a society for graphic artists and designers. Although it was designed just ten years after the Second World War's end, when much of the city still bore the scars of devastating conflict, the poster still manages to evoke a pre-war idea of Berlin (especially seen through the glamorous lens of the postwar 1950s). Fashionable figures cross the street, the cars are the latest and brightest, and the humming city is reflected in the wet road. Lithograph 128 x 90 cm An original vintage poster advertising Bovril. The poster was designed in 1920 by notable poster artist Herbert Harris for the advertising agency S H Bentley. It originally read 'Bovril prevents that sinking feeling' in English. Bovril, says the poster, is the ultimate comfort, and will keep you going in adversity. The Italian version of the poster, published in the 1930s, instead supplied "Bovril - vi terra a galla" - "Bovril keeps you afloat". German and French versions with appropriate idioms were also produced; these European versions of the poster were Musso & Co. and designed by the Max Dalang Atelier, both in Zurich. 45x58cm Original Vintage Lithographic poster Published by Pictorial Maps Limited, Kerry Lee's own company The first edition of this map was 1947; this is a later edition showing as it does Fitzwilliam College in its new location on the Huntingdon Road where it moved in 1963, but still referring to it as Fitzwilliam House - it became a college in 1966. Well known as a creator of pictorial maps of British cities from the mid 20th century, he generally draws a self-portrait in the bottom corner by his signature - as here, where he is seen (mustachioed and bearded, and clad in a green tunic) with his ever-faithful dog Jim. Educated at Reading Schools of Arts and Science, the Slade and the Sorbonne in Paris, he subsequently assisted his step-father, an architect named Mr Harvey, as draftsman. Following the Depression Lee set up 'Associated Artists' at Blandford Studios off Baker Street, with a group of other commercial artists. During World War 2 he was based in Hertfordshire creating detailed cut-away drawings of German aircraft, and after the war - still at Blandford Studios - published a series of pictorial maps, both those for British Rail and also his own publications. -
Louis Masquelier (1898-1945)
The Telephone
L. Masquelier/ Lorraine Sqdrn. (2nd TAF Security Poster No.4) Lithographic Poster 55x34.5cm Issued by the 2nd Tactical Airforce ('TAF'). This was a combination of both fighter and bomber units formed for the purposes of supporting the army in the 1944 invasion of Europe. The artist was a Sergent-chef (sergeant) in No 342 (Lorraine) Squadron RAF, a Free French Squadron transferred back to the Armée de l'Air in December 1945. An air gunner - and relatively old at 41 at the beginning of the war - he flew on many operations, also serving as cine-cameraman thanks to his artistic skills. He died on 28 May 1945, after the end of the war. Here a Frenchman has depicted that most English of items, Giles Gilbert Scott's K2 telephone box warning members of the 2nd TAF to be careful when using the telephone. Printed For HM Stationery Office By Thomas Forman and Sons Ltd, Nottingham. This posters makes use of Myerscough Walker's original painting of a church bombed in the Blitz, with new buildings being constructed behind. Even in the face of war and destruction, Britain builds itself up to prosper - and, by saving, so can we. Myerscough Walker was an architectural draughtsman. He trained at Leeds School of Art and went on to the Architectural Association in London. In 1931 he won the Tite prize and was celebrated in his career for his skill as a draughtsman – as well as architect, writer, artist, sculptor and stage designer. Lithographic poster 99 x 61 cm Per Arnoldi was born in Copenhagen in 1941. He is a Danish designer and artist most famous for his prolific commercial poster art. Arnoldi is a lifelong fan of jazz, and, as well as having created many jazz-related posters, he hosts monthly jazz radio shows and occasionally tours with a jazz trio. This bold and dynamic poster is typical of Arnoldi's jazz designs. He notably uses block primary colours and simple, often silhouetted, compositions. The Tourist Association of Copenhagen commissioned the poster in order to encourage tourists to visit the city and its musical haunts. The saxophonist silhouetted in the image is thought to be a representation of Stan Getz, the American jazz saxophonist who died in 1991. The General Aircraft GAL.48 Hotspur was a military glider designed and built by the British company General Aircraft Ltd during World War II. When the British airborne establishment was formed in 1940 by order of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, it was decided that gliders would be used to transport airborne troops into battle. General Aircraft Ltd were given a contract by the Ministry of Aircraft Production in June 1940 to design and produce an initial glider for use by the airborne establishment, which resulted in the Hotspur. Conceived as an "assault" glider which necessitated a compact design and no more than eight troops carried, tactical philosophy soon favoured larger numbers of troops being sent into battle aboard gliders. Due to this, the Hotspur was mainly relegated to training where it did excel and it became the basic trainer for the glider schools that were formed. The Hotspur was named after Sir Henry Percy, a significant captain during the Anglo-Scottish wars who was also known as "Hotspur". A Hotspur Mark II (HH268) replica is on display at the Museum of Army Flying in Hampshire, England. The front fuselage of a Hotspur was preserved at the Parachute Regiment And Airborne Forces Museum in Aldershot prior to the museum''s 2007 closing, in anticipation of a move to the Imperial War Museum Duxford. 'Den Permanente', "The Permanente Exhibition" (1956)
Lithographic poster 84 x 61 cm The Danish artist Arne Ungermann designed this poster in 1956 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Den Permanente in Copenhagen. Den Permanente, or the Permanent Exhibition, celebrated Danish art, craft, and design, and operated between the 1930s and 1980s. The Danish silversmith Kay Bojesen came up with the idea for the exhibition, which also served as a shop where customers could buy Danish art and crafts. Bojesen's idea became a reality when Christian Grauballe, director of the iconic Danish design company Holmegaard, invested in it in 1931. Den Permanente became an icon of Danish 20th century design, selling furniture, glassware, lighting, ceramics, jewellery, and textiles. Bojesen is most famous for his wooden monkey design, which Ungermann features in his poster. The motif of the mermaid emerging from the sea could be a motif drawn from Hans Christian Andersen, but made modern - she breaks the surface of the ocean in order to marvel at the treasure trove of man-made objects exhibited at Den Permanente. The notable Little Mermaid statue on Copenhagen's promenade, installed in 1913, is also inspired by Andersen's fairy tale. Fougasse reminds us that we ought not to discuss secrets which could be of use to them. Fougasse was a British cartoonist. He was art editor of Punch between 1937 and 1949, and subsequently editor until 1953. He is best known for his ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ series of posters, and the other posters for the Ministry of Information and London Transport. As the Second World War progressed, the Ministry of Information’s poster campaign had become less and less effective. There were posters instructing the population to save old clothes for rags, turn off the lights, save food, dig for victory, watch out for spies, and keep calm and carry on. With this instruction overload, the population had ceased paying attention to the posters. Fougasse noticed this, and offered his services unpaid to the Ministry of Information, with a view to bringing a touch of humour to the posters. His amusing designs with pithy captions, reminiscent of newspaper cartoons, helped to get the Ministry's messages across in a novel way.Fougasse's distinctive poster style, with the red border, was subsequently adopted by other Ministry artists.Condition: excellent. Jeux de la Passion Oberammergau (1960)

This magnificent poster advertises the Passion Play (an outdoor play telling the Easter story) held every ten years in Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps. Tradition tells that the town was struck with plague in 1633; the townsfolk vowed that they would perform a Passion Play every ten years as a symbol of thanks to God if the plague would end, which it did. At the turn of the twentieth century, improved railways across Europe meant that people from outside the Alps could travel to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau. This poster was designed for publication in France, to encourage the French to come to see the play. Condition: generally very good; a few tiny repaired edge tears. Not backed. Original vintage poster 100 x 64 cm Hugo Wetli trained as a technical draughtsman and then became apprenticed to a private graphic studio. He worked in Geneva and Berne as a painter and draughtsman, also producing book illustrations and travel poster designs. In 1947 he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and then ran his own graphic design studio. Original vintage poster 30 x 20 in Poster published for the Ministry of Information. In this series of ten posters, "Mrs Housewife" shows us how to save fuel at home as part of the Home Front war effort. Lithographic poster 32 x 20 cm (12.5 x 8 in) Version printed on thinner paper. Fougasse was a British cartoonist. He was art editor of Punch between 1937 and 1949, and subsequently editor until 1953. He is best known for his ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ series of posters, and the other posters for the Ministry of Information and London Transport. As the Second World War progressed, the Ministry of Information’s poster campaign had become less and less effective. There were posters instructing the population to save old clothes for rags, turn off the lights, save food, dig for victory, watch out for spies, and keep calm and carry on. With this instruction overload, the population had ceased paying attention to the posters. Fougasse noticed this, and offered his services unpaid to the Ministry of Information, with a view to bringing a touch of humour to the posters. His amusing designs with pithy captions, reminiscent of newspaper cartoons, helped to get the Ministry's messages across in a novel way. Fougasse's distinctive poster style, with the red border, was subsequently adopted by other Ministry artists. Original vintage poster 51 x 76 cm Signed in plate. Issued by the Ministry of Fuel and Power; printed for HM Stationery Office by Field Sons & Co Ltd, Bradford. We have been unable to identify any other copy of this poster by this renowned designer in any public collection - it is possibly the only remaining copy. A Ministry of Fuel poster encouraging the public to use less fuel. FHK Henrion was a German graphic designer who moved to Paris after leaving school, studying with the poster designer Paul Colin and then moving to London in 1936. Interned in the Isle of Man during the Second World War, he went on to design posters for the Ministry of Information and the US Office of War Information. After the War he started his own design agency, pioneering the concept of corporate identity. Clients included KLM, Giro, The Post Office, Tate & Lyle. The Ministry of Power and Fuel existed from 1942 to 1957 to control the nation's use of the scarce resources during and after the Second World War.
