Sir Albert Edward Richardson (1880–1964) was a distinguished British architect, teacher, and historian, known for his deep reverence for classical design principles and his pivotal contributions to architecture during the 20th century. He was a prolific figure whose work and writings championed traditional architectural forms amidst the rise of modernism. Sir Albert Richardson's involvement with Antwerp is less well-documented and less prolific than his contributions in other areas, such as Dieppe or his architectural work in Britain. However, as in the other cities, he remained captivated by the architecture of Antwerp and produced numerous studies, including this watercolour of the Cathedral of Our Lady, during his time there. Watercolour 24 x 17 cm Signed to bottom right. Little is known about Joy Fox. It seems that she studied at Girton College, Cambridge between 1939 and 1942. This charming watercolour depicting the main gate at the college featured in Douglas de Lacey's book 'Girton's War: the Village 1939-1945.' The work included memories of rationing and the various strategies employed to keep warm and to find clothes for coming up to Girton. There are also descriptions of lectures, college rules, entertainments and war work. Kerry Lee (1903 - 1988) The Life of William Shakespeare and Map of Stratford-upon-Avon
Original vintage poster 46 x 60 cm Published by Pictorial Maps Limited, Kerry Lee's own company c.1965 This edition of the map was produced around 1965. It depicts a map of Stratford-upon-Avon with several well known landmarks including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on the waterfront. As is typical for Lee's maps, however, this map has a unique charm as it not only illustrates the geography of the town, but also the history, recounting the life of Stratford-upon-Avon's most famous export, William Shakespeare. Lee scrawls a chronology of Shakespeare's life over any and every free green space, referring to the playwright affectionately as 'Will.' Lee also frames the map with scenes from Shakespeare's most famous plays, including Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest and Macbeth. Well known as a creator of pictorial maps of British cities from the mid 20th century, he generally draws a self-portrait in the bottom corner by his signature - as here, where he is seen painting (mustachioed and bearded, and clad in a green tunic) with his ever-faithful dog Jim. Educated at Reading Schools of Arts and Science, the Slade and the Sorbonne in Paris, he subsequently assisted his step-father, an architect named Mr Harvey, as draftsman. Following the Depression Lee set up 'Associated Artists' at Blandford Studios off Baker Street, with a group of other commercial artists. During World War 2 he was based in Hertfordshire creating detailed cut-away drawings of German aircraft, and after the war - still at Blandford Studios - published a series of pictorial maps, both those for British Rail and also his own publications. -
Rowland Hilder Convoy Your Country To Victory
Lithograph 75 x 51 cm This poster was a British propaganda piece issued during World War II by the National Savings Committee. It was part of the broader campaign to encourage citizens to invest in National Savings Certificates, War Bonds, and Defence Bonds to financially support the war effort. The poster features a convoy of merchant ships sailing under the Union Jack, emphasising the vital role of maritime trade and supply lines in the war effort. Its slogan, 'convoy your country to victory', also instills a strong sense of patriotism as it draws a direct link between the public's purchase of saving bonds and national war victory. Rowland Hilder was a well known landscape artist and book illustrator. Born in New York state, his English father moved the family to Kent, England in 1915. It was here his natural talent for drawing was noticed by his school. Later Hilder went to study at Goldsmith’s College in London. He was well known as an accomplished watercolourist, particularly in his sensitive handling of the sky and earth. Between 1964 and 1974 he was president of England’s Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Condition: Generally very good, couple of short repaired edge tears. Halliwell (1905–1986) was a British artist, illustrator, and designer best known for his vibrant poster designs created for British railway companies during the mid-20th century. Born in Southport, Halliwell developed a strong foundation in art and design early in life. He studied at the Southport School of Art from 1923 to 1926 before graduating to the Royal College of Art in London and subsequently practising as a professional designer from the 1930s. Following his studies, Halliwell married Doris Doyle in Strood Kent, and went on to have a significant teaching career himself, most notably as a lecturer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (later part of Central Saint Martins), where he influenced a new generation of designers and illustrators. Halliwell is perhaps best remembered for his vibrant and engaging poster designs created for British railway companies during the 1930s. His work was characterised by a bright, graphic style that balanced charm with clarity, often depicting idealised scenes of British holiday destinations—from sunny seaside towns to tranquil countryside vistas. Beyond posters, his artistic output included book illustration, commercial design, and stage costume sketches, showcasing his versatility across mediums. His posters continue to remain enduring symbols of a golden age of British travel and design and are displayed in major collections including the London Transport Museum and the V&A. This striking poster design by A. E. Halliwell showcases his signature Art Deco and modernist flair, with bold geometric layering and a limited but vibrant colour palette of blue, black, orange, and white. Two stylised faces dominate the composition—one serene and contemplative, rendered in warm tones and delicate lines, and the other more intense and enigmatic, in stark black and white with piercing eyes. Diagonal bands of colour and stippled gradients create a sense of movement and emotional contrast, while the use of overlapping translucent blocks adds depth and abstraction. Overall, it’s a compelling interplay of mood, contrast, and 20th-century design aesthetics. Etching and aquatint 42.5 x 58 cm Numbered 27 / 100. Published by Editions Alecto. A copy of this print, owned by the Government Art Collection, is currently in the British Embassy in Saudi Arabia. Richard Beer was a painter and printmaker who focused on architecture and landscapes. He studied at the Slade School of Art from 1945 to 1950 and then studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris on a French Government Scholarship. He then worked and studied at Atelier 17, an art school and studio run by the artist Stanley William Hayter (arguably one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th century). The atelier was highly influential in the study and promotion of 20th-century printmaking, and it was here that Beer developed his etching skills. Beer then went on to work for the Royal Ballet choreographer John Cranko, designing the sets and costumes for "The Lady and the Fool" at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. He also produced several book illustrations and book jacket designs. Beer taught printmaking at the Chelsea School of Art for 40 years and was also a founding member of the Printmakers' Council. He travelled widely through Italy, France, Spain, and Morocco, sketching prolifically and painting rural and architectural landscapes. Beer would then make etchings and paintings in his Primrose Hill studio, inspired by the landscapes he had sketched and seen while travelling. Probably his greatest work was a collaboration with John Betjeman to produce a portfolio of prints of ten Wren Churches in the City of London for Editions Alecto, copies of which are in The Government Art Collection. That collection contains a total of 54 prints by Beer, and the Tate Gallery’s collection holds another seven. His series of Oxford architectural engravings was also produced for Editions Alecto, as was a series of predominantly architectural views in Southern Europe. Limited edition coloured etching signed in pencil and numbered 75/150. 62x44cm Born in London in 1928, just too late to serve in World War II, Richard Beer studied between 1945-1950 at the Slade School. Subsequently, a French Government scholarship allowed him to spend time in Paris at Atelier 17, working under Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988), one of the most significant print makers of the 20th Century – having spent the War in New York, advising as a camofleur, Hayter only returned to Paris in 1950. Subsequently Beer studied at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris. Working for John Cranko, choreographer for the Royal Ballet, Beer designed the sets and costumes for his The Lady and the Fool at Covent Garden, subsequently working for him following his move in 1961 to Stuttgart Ballet. Additionally he produced book illustrations and designed book jackets. Richard Beer taught print-making at the Chelsea School of Art where he was a popular teacher. Probably his greatest work was a collaboration with John Betjeman to produce a portfolio of prints of ten Wren Churches in the City for Editions Alecto, copies of which are in The Government Art Collection. That collection contains a total of 54 prints by Beer, and the Tate Gallery’s collection holds seven. His Oxford series was also produced for Editions Alecto, as was a series of predominantly architectural views in Southern Europe. Norman Adams RA (1927-2005)
The Sound of Scarp and Vision of Bernadette (c.1980) (Double sided)
24 x 26 cm Watercolour Norman Adams RA, former professor of painting at the Royal Academy, felt strongly that, "art [without religion] would be a pretty empty vocation." Despite not going to church, nor identifying with any specific belief system, the artist's paintings of the natural world, often dramatic in nature, betray a strong spiritual intensity. On one side of this watercolour Adams has painted a monumental wave crash, captioned 'Southwest Wind - Very Rough Sea The Sea of Scarp.' On the other, is a softer, lilac abstraction entitled 'Vision of Bernadette', a reference to Saint Bernadette's famous visions of Mary at the Lourdes grotto. He studied at Harrow School of Art (1940-46) and then the Royal College of Art (1948-51). His first solo show was at Gimpel Fils in 1952, and his last at the Fine Art Society in 2004. His works included many murals and stage designs. There are many of his major works in the national collection, including the Tate, Leeds Museums, The Whitworth, the Royal College of Art, Bristol Museums, Leicester Museums, The Royal Academy and the Hepworth, Wakefield. -
Artist unknown The Founder and Benefactors of Trinity College
Early 18th century Hand coloured engraving 36.5 x 47.5 cm Rare - we have been unable to identify another copy of this print. This beautifully tinted engraving was originally produced for the 1732 Oxford University Almanack. The founder of Trinity College, Sir Thomas Pope, is pictured holding an image based on John Bereblock’s 1566 engraving; it depicts the quadrangle known today as Durham Quad. Also pictured are Ralph Bathurst (President of Trinity 1664-1704), the archbishop of Canterbury, Gilbert Sheldon; the bishop of Worcester, Robert Skinner, and the bishop of Chester, Nicholas Stratford. Perhaps what is most notable about this engraving is, however, the background of the college landscape. By 1732 Trinity was well underway in developing a highly elaborate garden, with geometric paths, an avenue of limes, yew hedges trimmed to resemble panelling, and so on. None of this is represented here and the quadrangle is instead exponentially extended. Although these plans ultimately never came to fruition, ideas of a vast expansion persisted throughout the reign of George II and the plans were replicated in the Almanack for 1756. Complete with vibrant colours and sharp lines, this rare engraving offers a unique historical insight into the transformation of and ambitions for Trinity College, Oxford. Undergraduates, academics, and townspeople saunter along, all under the watchful eye of Tom Tower. John Donowell was an eighteenth-century British architect and engraver, considered to be one of the principal architect-draughtsmen in the latter part of the eighteenth century. He exhibited in 1761 at the Free Society, then through the 1760s at the Society of Artists, and from 1778 to 1786 at the Royal Academy; prints, some hand-coloured, were published at this time. Bristol Beaufort Torpedo Bomber
US Naval Aviation Training Division Original aeroplane recognition poster (1942) 63 x 47 cm A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have several in this series; view them here - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. The Bristol Beaufort (manufacturer designation Type 152) was a British twin-engined torpedo bomber designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, and developed from experience gained designing and building the earlier Blenheim light bomber. At least 1,180 Beauforts were built by Bristol and other British manufacturers. The Australian government''s Department of Aircraft Production (DAP) also manufactured variants of the Beaufort. These are often known collectively as the DAP Beaufort. More than 700 Australian-built Beauforts saw service with the Royal Australian Air Force in the South West Pacific theatre, where they were used until the end of the war. Beauforts first saw service with Royal Air Force Coastal Command and then the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm from 1940. They were used as torpedo bombers, conventional bombers and mine-layers until 1942, when they were removed from active service and were then used as trainer aircraft until being declared obsolete in 1945. Beauforts also saw considerable action in the Mediterranean; Beaufort squadrons based in Egypt and on Malta helped interdict Axis shipping supplying Rommel's Deutsches Afrikakorps in North Africa. Although it was designed as a torpedo-bomber, the Beaufort was more often used as a medium day bomber. The Beaufort also flew more hours in training than on operational missions and more were lost through accidents and mechanical failures than were lost to enemy fire. The Beaufort was adapted as a long-range heavy fighter variant called the Beaufighter, which proved to be very successful and many Beaufort units eventually converted to the Beaufighter. FHK Henrion was a German graphic designer who moved to Paris after leaving school, studying with the poster designer Paul Colin and then moving to London in 1936. Interned in the Isle of Man during the Second World War, he went on to design posters for the Ministry of Information and the US Office of War Information. After the War he started his own design agency, pioneering the concept of corporate identity. Clients included KLM, Giro, The Post Office, Tate & Lyle. The Ministry of Power and Fuel existed from 1942 to 1957 to control the nation's use of the scarce resources during and after the Second World War. As the Second World War progressed, the Ministry of Information’s poster campaign had become less and less effective. There were posters instructing the population to save old clothes for rags, turn off the lights, save food, dig for victory, watch out for spies, and keep calm and carry on. With this instruction overload, the population had ceased paying attention to the posters. Fougasse noticed this, and offered his services unpaid to the Ministry of Information, with a view to bringing a touch of humour to the posters. His amusing designs with pithy captions, reminiscent of newspaper cartoons, helped to get the Ministry's messages across in a novel way. Fougasse's distinctive poster style, with the red border, was subsequently adopted by other Ministry artists.
