Anonymous Design for Triptych Above Alta
British, c. 1920s Gouache 38x28.5cm Christ Pantocrator stands in the middle of the design, surrounded by the four evangelists - represented by the Eagle, Bull, Lion and Angel - together with two seraphim. After study at Sheffield School of Art, he was the winner of a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where the head of print making was John Nash (from 1934 to 1940). La Dell became head of lithography there from 1948 until his death. During the war he was an official war artist and a camofleur, but he is probably best known for his lithographs of Oxford and Cambridge that he published himself, together with those he published for the School Prints scheme and Lyons Tea Rooms. His works are widely held in the public collections, including the Royal Academy and the Government Art Collection, the latter having a copy of this print. Louis Masquelier (1898-1945)
The Telephone
L. Masquelier/ Lorraine Sqdrn. (2nd TAF Security Poster No.4) Lithographic Poster 55x34.5cm Issued by the 2nd Tactical Airforce ('TAF'). This was a combination of both fighter and bomber units formed for the purposes of supporting the army in the 1944 invasion of Europe. The artist was a Sergent-chef (sergeant) in No 342 (Lorraine) Squadron RAF, a Free French Squadron transferred back to the Armée de l'Air in December 1945. An air gunner - and relatively old at 41 at the beginning of the war - he flew on many operations, also serving as cine-cameraman thanks to his artistic skills. He died on 28 May 1945, after the end of the war. Here a Frenchman has depicted that most English of items, Giles Gilbert Scott's K2 telephone box warning members of the 2nd TAF to be careful when using the telephone. Kerry Lee (1903-1988)

45x58cm Original Vintage Lithographic poster Published by Pictorial Maps Limited, Kerry Lee's own company The first edition of this map was 1947; this is a later edition showing as it does Fitzwilliam College in its new location on the Huntingdon Road where it moved in 1963, but still referring to it as Fitzwilliam House - it became a college in 1966. Well known as a creator of pictorial maps of British cities from the mid 20th century, he generally draws a self-portrait in the bottom corner by his signature - as here, where he is seen (mustachioed and bearded, and clad in a green tunic) with his ever-faithful dog Jim. Educated at Reading Schools of Arts and Science, the Slade and the Sorbonne in Paris, he subsequently assisted his step-father, an architect named Mr Harvey, as draftsman. Following the Depression Lee set up 'Associated Artists' at Blandford Studios off Baker Street, with a group of other commercial artists. During World War 2 he was based in Hertfordshire creating detailed cut-away drawings of German aircraft, and after the war - still at Blandford Studios - published a series of pictorial maps, both those for British Rail and also his own publications. -

Colin Moss (1914 - 2005)
The Cedars, Kensington
Watercolour and gouache 57 x 40 cm Signed and dated '50 lower right. Moss' view of the Cedars, complete with passers-by and a stormy, jagged sky. Colin Moss was a noted British painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and teacher who served as a camoufleur during the Second World War. Moss was born in Ipswich but grew up in Plymouth following the death of his father at the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Moss studied at the Plymouth Art School from 1930 to 1934 and then went on to the Royal College of Art, where he studied under Gilbert Spencer and Charles Mahoney. He worked on murals for the British Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair. During the war, Moss made a series of watercolours depicting his time as a camoufleur. He had designed the camouflage scheme for Stonebridge Power Station in Wembley, and produced several watercolours of the camouflaged structure. These pictures, as well as several others painted during his WWII deployment, are now held by the Imperial War Museum, having been purchased by the War Artists' Advisory Committee. In 1947 Moss' military service ended, and he became a teacher at the Ipswich School of Art. He had solo exhibitions at the Kensington Art Gallery in 1951 and the Zwemmer Gallery in 1955, and his work began to be acquired by the national collections. He became a founder member of the New Ipswich Art Group in 1958, and the Six in Suffolk Group in 1976. In the 1970s he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society, and retrospective exhibitions of his work were held at various British art galleries throughout the 1980s. He continued to hold numerous solo exhibitions after his retirement, and taught artists Brian Eno and Maggi Hambling. Provenance: "Britain in Watercolours" exhibition. Condition: excellent. Lithograph 128 x 90 cm An original vintage poster advertising Bovril. The poster was designed in 1920 by notable poster artist Herbert Harris for the advertising agency S H Bentley. It originally read 'Bovril prevents that sinking feeling' in English. Bovril, says the poster, is the ultimate comfort, and will keep you going in adversity. The Italian version of the poster, published in the 1930s, instead supplied "Bovril - vi terra a galla" - "Bovril keeps you afloat". German and French versions with appropriate idioms were also produced; these European versions of the poster were Musso & Co. and designed by the Max Dalang Atelier, both in Zurich. Condition: generally very good; repaired tear from edge approx 4" long towards bottom on left side, essentially invisible. Andrew Ingamells (1956 - )

Etching 54 x 48 cm Signed lower right in pencil. Inspired by David Loggan’s celebrated engraving of the College in 1680, this view of King's College was the first of Ingamells’ series of views of Oxford and Cambridge. It took six months to complete and has long-since sold out from the publisher. Ingamells trained at St Albans School of Art and the London College of Printing, subsequently working as a graphic designer and illustrator. Based in London, he began making drawings of the buildings and landscapes of London. Ingamells’ work is in many public collections including those of the Tate Gallery, The National Trust, The Paul Mellon Centre for British Art, and the City of London Guildhall Library. His pictures are also in several private collections, including those of various Oxford and Cambridge colleges, HM King Charles III, and Shell Oil. The artist is currently part-way through his epic project to record all the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, a project undertaken in homage to David Loggan. Condition: excellent; in wood frame. The Telecinema - Telekinema - National Film Theatre Southbank (1957)

The Telecinema was built for the 1951 Festival of Britain, situated between Waterloo Station and the Royal Festival Hall. Whilst press releases referred to the Telecinema, the outside of the building proclaimed Telekinema. Wells Coates were the architect, creating - in the words of Today's Cinema - "A fly-away linear design [with a ] gay façade and bold modern stare". Seating 410 people it was the first cinema in Britain with both 3D sound - provided by an array of speakers behind the screen and allowing the sound to come from the direction of the person speaking - and 3D vision. It was demolished in 1957 when the National Film Theatre moved to its current location - renamed in 2007 as BFI Southbank.

Lithographic poster 84 x 61 cm Original Vintage Poster Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche from Kurfürstendamm by Night A view of the 'Champs Elysee' of Berlin, the main shopping street in 1955. Although it was designed just ten years after the Second World War's end, when much of the city still bore the scars of devastating conflict, the poster still manages to evoke a pre-war idea of Berlin (especially seen through the glamorous lens of the postwar 1950s). Fashionable figures cross the street, the cars are the latest and brightest, and the humming city is reflected in the wet road. Valerie Thornton (1931-1991)

Etching 24 x 35 cm Numbered 13/75 lower left, titled below, and signed and dated lower right, all in pencil. A very good example of Thornton's recognisable and unusual etching style. Her work is deeply concerned with material, and many of her etchings focus on eroded stone, emotive landscapes, and weathered architecture. Here, Thornton draws out the exceptional texture of the Bodleian Library's local stone. Valerie Thornton was a British etcher and printmaker. She was born in London, but was evacuated to Canada with her two brothers during World War II. She returned to London in 1944 and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1949. From 1950 to 1953 Thornton studied under P.F. Millard at the Regent Street Polytechnic, then spent eight months at Atelier 17 in Paris. In the early 1960s, she moved to New York and worked at Pratt Graphic Art Centre. In 1955, she succeeded Howard Hodgkin as assistant art teacher at Charterhouse School and in 1965 she became a founding member of the Print Makers Council. In 1970 she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. Thornton was a member of The Regent Street Group (a group of nine artists who studied together at the Regent Street Polytechnic in the early 1950s). The group also included Susan Horsfield, Renate Meyer, Michael Lewis, Ken Symonds, Philip Le Bas, and Peter Riches. Thornton's work is included in a number of major public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the Tate. Thornton died in 1991 in Chelsworth, Suffolk. Jacques Nathan Garamond (born Jacques Nathan) was a French graphic designer. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs and became the Director of Contemporary Architecture there. He then began his career as a graphic designer, specialising in posters and commercial illustrations. He was a founding member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, a society for graphic artists and designers. Original vintage poster 77 x 50 cm Signed lower left in the plate. Issued by the Tilling Group of Omnibus Companies. Jones' poster, with its two happy swans in the foreground, encourages us to travel Britain via coach (the coach tour was becoming ever more popular in 1950s Britain). The text reads: "You can travel anywhere in Britain by coach and bus ... ask for details of express coach services and touring holidays at any travel agent or Victoria Coach Station S.W.1." Barbara Jones was an English artist and writer. She studied at Croydon High School and then the Royal College of Art (where her contemporaries included John Piper, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and Edward Ardizzone), beginning in the Department of Engraving but transferring to the Department of Mural Decoration in her second year. She illustrated the pamphlet 'Bombed Churches as War Memorials' in 1945. Jones worked on several notable murals after the war, including for the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946, and the Enterprise Scotland exhibition in 1947. She also did commercial work for many companies, including P&O Ferries. In 1951 Jones co-curated Black Eyes and Lemonade, an exhibition of craft, folk, and popular objects at the Whitechapel Gallery. Russian Aircraft Recognition Chart (c. 1940s - World War II era)
Original vintage poster 76 x 102 cm Published by the Ministry of Supply. Many of these aircraft would have been in use during World War II and very familiar to the Allies. A rather attractive recognition chart - in stark contrast to many similar posters which employ a less artistic approach. PE-8; TU-2; PE -2 & 3; IL-4; ER-4; A-7; YAK-3; YAK-9; IL-2; and LA-5 are the aircraft features. Condition: a few creases, otherwise generally good to very good. Valerie Thornton (1931 - 1991)
Ponte Vecchio, Florence (1972)
Etching and aquatint 33 x 20 cm Numbered 1/60 lower left, titled below, and signed and dated lower right, all in pencil. Here, Thornton muses on the dramatic differences in tone and texture between the water of the River Arno, the smooth paleness of the Ponte Vecchio, and the dark terracotta of the city's roofs. Her work is deeply concerned with material, and many of her etchings focus on eroded stone, emotive landscapes, and weathered architecture. Valerie Thornton was a British etcher and printmaker. She was born in London, but was evacuated to Canada with her two brothers during World War II. She returned to London in 1944 and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1949. From 1950 to 1953 Thornton studied under P.F. Millard at the Regent Street Polytechnic, then spent eight months at Atelier 17 in Paris. In the early 1960s, she moved to New York and worked at Pratt Graphic Art Center. In 1955, she succeeded Howard Hodgkin as assistant art teacher at Charterhouse School and in 1965 she became a founding member of the Print Makers Council. In 1970 she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. Thornton was a member of The Regent Street Group (a group of nine artists who studied together at the Regent Street Polytechnic in the early 1950s). The group also included Susan Horsfield, Renate Meyer, Michael Lewis, Ken Symonds, Philip Le Bas, and Peter Riches. Thornton's work is included in a number of major public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the Tate. Thornton died in 1991 in Chelsworth, Suffolk. Original vintage poster 100 x 60 cm A view of the Téléphérique de la vallée Blanche cable car over Mont Blanc entices us to book a skiing trip to Chamonix. Pierre Tairraz was the fourth in line of the Tairraz family of mountain photographers, following in the footsteps of his father George, his father George, and his father Joseph. Between 1857 and 2000, four photographers, from father to son, invent and transmit the art of mountain photography. Their family name is Tairraz. Pierre was an exceptional climber and worked for 40 years photographing mountains, particularly the French Alps. Condition: generally very good; a few little edge tears and a slight marginal loss to top (all of which will disappear under a mount when framed). Watercolour 62 x 37 cm Signed in red crayon lower right. Louis Osman's proposal for the post-war, post-bombing redevelopment of St John's church on Smith Square. Osman had envisioned an interior with a ceiling painted by Picasso; sadly, this project was never executed. The church was bombed in 1941 and gutted by fire; subsequently, the church was a ruin open to the sky for over 20 years. It was saved by Lady Parker of Waddington, who formed the Friends of St John's in 1962 to raise money and restore the church to its former glory - a reconstruction in the style of the church's original architect, Thomas Archer. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC. Condition: generally very good.
