Lithographic poster 80.5 x 57 cm A poster advertising the 'Vort Hjem Nordisk Udstilling' - the "Our Home: Nordic Exhibition". The exhibition explored Nordic interior design and was commissioned by the Danish Society of Arts and Crafts. The poster presents a domestic scene of a woman arranging flowers; we see her through the glass panels of an ajar door, which invites us into the typically Danish interior. Lithographic poster c.1940 32 x 20 cm (12.5 x 8 in) The cartoonist Fougasse, was a British cartoonist who was art editor of Punch 1937-1949, and subsequently editor until 1953. He is best known for his ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ series of posters, and the other posters both for the Ministry of Information, London Underground and others. The Ministry of Information’s wartime poster campaign was soon regarded as dull and uninspiring on account of its hectoring messages such as ‘Keep Calm and Carry On.’ There were posters telling the population how to conduct virtually every minute of their daily lives – for instance by saving old clothes for rags, turning off the lights, saving food, digging for victory, or watching out for spies. With this instruction overload the population ceased paying attention to the posters, so Fougasse offered his services to the Ministry of Information unpaid, with a view to bringing a touch of humour to serious messages. An amusing picture and a pithy caption helped to get the message across to the reader. His distinctive style, with the red border, was adopted by other Ministry artists. Gouache 21.5 x 14 cm From a small archive of works by Brownbridge, a member of the Society of Industrial Artists. A beautiful original gouache design for a brochure of continental recipes, created to advertise Radiation cookers (innovative gas cookers which were sold in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s). Brownbridge's brightly-coloured design includes boldly slanted text in pink and turquoise, set over a deep blue background; he also highlights architectural gems of Europe, such as the Eiffel Tower. By cooking with a Radiation cooker, the cover suggests, you too can experience the cultural and culinary delights of Europe from the comfort of your own home. Chanter's Folly and Dry Dock, Appledore
Lithographic poster for Shell Mex BP (1937) 30x44" Provenance: the family of the artist, by descent. Condition: A/A- backed to linen. Shell produced a large series of posters in the 1920s and 30s to encourage motorists to use their products in that early and golden age of motoring. They often commission artists not known for their commercial art, so their posters very often featured large and dramatic views of the British countryside and landmarks, inspiring motorists to travel further afield. Here the Ellises have taken a well-known landmark and applied avant-garde artistic techniques so stylising the view, turning, e.g. the clouds into an array of angular v-shaped blocks. Thomas Burnard Chanter (1797-1874) was owner of a fleet of sailing vessels and erected a signal tower ('Chanter's Folly') to give him advance notice of his vessels' arrival. It was demolished in 1952. The dry dock - Richmond dry dock - was built in 1853 and designed to hold two 'large' ships. It exists today and is Grade II listed. Claude Harrison Shell Guide to Westmoreland
Original poster for Shell Oil c. 1960s 76x51cm Shell commissioned a series of posters to go with their County Guide books, and they commissioned paintings by the leading artists of the day. Claude Harrison studied at Preston College of Art (1939-1941) and Liverpool College of Art (1941-2) after which he enlisted in the RAF for five years. On his return, he continued studies at Royal College of Art (1947-50). Harrison’s work consisted of murals, portraits, conversation pieces and mystical figure compositions - which are seen here in the Westmoreland poster. The Lent Bumps 1931 - 1940
Pen, ink and watercolour 60 x 48 cm A hand-painted chart illustrating the results of the Lent Bumps from 1931 to 1939, with a note that in 1940 there were 'No Lent Races due to War'. The Lent Bumps, also known as "Lents" or the Lent Races are a set of University of Cambridge rowing races held each year on the River Cam. The races are open to all college boat clubs from the University of Cambridge, the University Medical and Veterinary Schools and Anglia Ruskin Boat Club. The Lent Bumps take place over five days (Tuesday to Saturday) at the end of February / start of March and are run as bumps races (of rowing race in which a number of boats chase each other in single file, each crew attempting to catch and 'bump' the boat in front without being caught by the boat behind). The men's races officially began in 1887 and the women's in 1976. Condition: generally good; some age toning to board and a little staining to the margins that will be hidden by a mount. Lithograph 51 x 75 cm This fascinating and attractive map with elaborate cartouche highlights the attractions of the British Empire Exhibition, a showcase held in London to exhibit the fruits of Britain's overseas colonies. It was designed to boost support for the Empire's activities, encourage trade of imperial goods, and remind other world powers of Britain's (historic) colonial capacity. The Empire Stadium was built especially to house the exhibition; it is known today as Wembley Stadium. The exhibition was opened by King George V on St George's Day, 1924. Published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office. Printed by Chromoworks Limited, 1959 Lithographic poster 75x50cm Worsley was a war artist during World War II who was captured by the Germans and then an illustrator for Eagle comic. Click here for further biographical details and other posters by Worsley. The Soldier of the Queen depicted is a tank commander. At the time the poster was printed the main location for deployment of tanks was West Germany. In 1946 the British Army of the Rhine was created to protect Germany - and indeed Europe - from a Soviet invasion. Numbering up to 80,000 soldiers it was estimated that in the event of war the life expectancy of a tank commander would be less than two days. A Real Man's Life indeed. Lithograph 128 x 90 cm An original vintage poster advertising Bovril. The poster was designed in 1920 by notable poster artist Herbert Harris for the advertising agency S H Bentley. It originally read 'Bovril prevents that sinking feeling' in English. Bovril, says the poster, is the ultimate comfort, and will keep you going in adversity. The Italian version of the poster, published in the 1930s, instead supplied "Bovril - vi terra a galla" - "Bovril keeps you afloat". German and French versions with appropriate idioms were also produced; these European versions of the poster were Musso & Co. and designed by the Max Dalang Atelier, both in Zurich. Condition: generally very good; repaired tear from edge approx 4" long towards bottom on left side, essentially invisible. Boat Race at the Dorchester (1939)
Lithographic brochure 15 x 19.5 cm From a small archive of works by Brownbridge, a member of the Society of Industrial Artists. A design for a poster advertising the Dorchester's dinner after the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. The artist has built his design around dark and light blues, to represent the colours of Oxford and Cambridge respectively. Brownbridge's design is marvellously 1930s, from the boldly decorative typeface to the whimsically glamorous guests and their waiters floating below the invitation. Boat Race dinners in London are rather different today; at any rate, prices are not normally advertised as 'excluding Wines and Cigars'. Pen and Gouache c. 1940 75cm x 75cm "The prowess of our R.A.F. has not taken long to show a real effectiveness. The encounters of the last few days has sown to our enemy our supremacy. Difficult missions have been crowned with success by our different units. Flying sometime above 7000 feet in clouded skies surprising the enemy at a low altitude and exposing themselves to the enemy to protect the army. Their courage never falters." In the months prior to the Fall of France in May 1940 - before the Battle of Britain began - the RAF was in action in the skies above France and this design for a scarf depicts aeroplanes and pilots of the RAF. -

Lithographic poster 84 x 61 cm Original Vintage Poster Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche from Kurfürstendamm by Night A view of the 'Champs Elysee' of Berlin, the main shopping street in 1955. Although it was designed just ten years after the Second World War's end, when much of the city still bore the scars of devastating conflict, the poster still manages to evoke a pre-war idea of Berlin (especially seen through the glamorous lens of the postwar 1950s). Fashionable figures cross the street, the cars are the latest and brightest, and the humming city is reflected in the wet road. Original vintage poster 100 x 60 cm Riley's vintage poster extols the virtues of visiting sunny Barmouth - the scene depicts dozens of attractively (if perhaps unrealistically) tanned holidaymakers, a bright blue sea, and a pretty coastal town. The poster was part of a series produced for British Railways, designed to encourage rail travel to beauty spots across Britain. Principally known as a commercial artist, Harry Riley RI’s iconic poster designs of the 1920s - 1960s and his bright, joyful and idyllic depictions of British seaside holiday destinations, such as Morecambe, Plymouth, Weston-Super-Mare and Ilfracombe, were used to advertise the British rail network and have come to define Post-War British leisure and travel. He was also known for this work with airliners such as BOAC and Qantas. Although not an easily identifiable name within the echelons of the mid-20th century commercial art scene, Riley’s works pay testament to a highly skilled and prolific artist whose visual style fittingly captures the idealistic and amber-tinted vision of early 1960s glamour that the era’s commercial and travel sectors strove to embody. Harry Riley studied at St Martin's School of Art and was soon commissioned to produce commercial art and poster designs for companies such as Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason. He became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and worked as a cartoonist for the Daily Mail, later becoming President of the London Sketch Club. The bright and bold style of his art for British Railways has become instantly recognisable today and is an illustration of travel, leisure, and idealism in post-war Britain. Condition: colours good. A poster produced for London Transport illustrating the pleasurable destinations to be reached via Green Line Coaches. Sutherland's design depicts a pitchfork and a maize dolly - two promises of country life which the city-dweller might now easily access, thanks to the advent of British coach travel. Graham Sutherland OM was an English artist known for his romantic, abstract landscapes and portraits of public figures, including Churchill and the Queen Mother. Sutherland spent the 1920s mostly making landscape prints, but, following the collapse of the print market in the early 1930s branched out into watercolours. He also undertook a few commercial commissions for posters, working for London Transport, Shell and others. He served as an official war artist in the Second World War, painting industrial scenes on the British home front. After the war he worked in oils and explored figurative painting. Original Silver Gelatin photograph 19 x 25 cm Stamped to reverse "Copyright 'the Aeroplane'" 23 July 1945 HK543 was a Lancaster III, probably produced in 1943. Here she is shown in July 1945, she was recorded photgraphically on bombing trials from Boscombe Down that month, this photograph may reasonably be assumed to be from that event. 'Den Permanente', "The Permanente Exhibition" (1956)
Lithographic poster 84 x 61 cm The Danish artist Arne Ungermann designed this poster in 1956 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Den Permanente in Copenhagen. Den Permanente, or the Permanent Exhibition, celebrated Danish art, craft, and design, and operated between the 1930s and 1980s. The Danish silversmith Kay Bojesen came up with the idea for the exhibition, which also served as a shop where customers could buy Danish art and crafts. Bojesen's idea became a reality when Christian Grauballe, director of the iconic Danish design company Holmegaard, invested in it in 1931. Den Permanente became an icon of Danish 20th century design, selling furniture, glassware, lighting, ceramics, jewellery, and textiles. Bojesen is most famous for his wooden monkey design, which Ungermann features in his poster. The motif of the mermaid emerging from the sea could be a motif drawn from Hans Christian Andersen, but made modern - she breaks the surface of the ocean in order to marvel at the treasure trove of man-made objects exhibited at Den Permanente. The notable Little Mermaid statue on Copenhagen's promenade, installed in 1913, is also inspired by Andersen's fairy tale. These posters were produced by the Institute of Army Education, likely for display in barracks. Created in the 1950s, they illustrate the 'vintage' uniforms worn by the Corps during the First World War. Condition: punched holes to corners as issued; otherwise generally very good. 30x20" [HMSO, London] nd. np. A householder, dressed in a tie, is shown spraying water onto a fire, as his wife pumps water out of a bucket using a stirrup hand pump.
