Watercolour and pen 28 x 35 cm Signed lower right. What is particularly interesting about this picture is the contrast between the rugged watercolour wash of the lawn and the fine pen expression of the college's architecture. Tavener painted several views of the city of Cheltenham and its architectural landmarks; Cheltenham College is a public school just outside the city, and Tavener expertly elicits its mid-nineteenth century architectural style here. -

Hand-coloured aquatint 24 x 20 cm Published by Rudolph Ackermann (1764 - 1834). A copy of this engraving is held by the National Portrait Gallery, reference NPG D4871. Robert Woodlark (also spelt Wodelarke) was an English academic and priest. He was the Provost of King's College, Cambridge, and the founder of St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He drew up the original statutes for the governance of the college and obtained a charter from Edward IV, 16 August 1475. Woodlark was a professor of sacred theology at the University and served as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1459 to 1460, and again from 1462 to 1463. Rudolph Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school at 96 Strand. Here Ackermann set up a lithographic press and began a trade in prints. He later began to manufacture colours and thick carton paper for landscape and miniature painters. Within three years the premises had become too small and he moved to 101 Strand, in his own words "four doors nearer to Somerset House", the seat of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints. Roberts Dunstan DSO - Tail-end Charlie on Lancaster Bomber
Original Silver Gelatin photograph, c. 1943 20 x 15 cm The sitting-down war played out in the skies suited amputees who wanted to continue killing the enemy. Douglas Bader famously bailed out of his Spitfire over Germany, leaving behind his artificial legs. There were others who flew with artificial legs, including Dunstan. Dunstan was born in 1922, lying about his age (by three years) in order to join up in June 1940. In January 1941, serving with the Royal Australian Engineers, he was injured in one leg near Tobruk (in Libya) on a night reconnaisance raid. After five operations his leg was amputated; after ten more he was returned to Australia and invalided out of the services in February 1942. A few months later, he caught sight of a poster recruiting for the RAAF, and volunteered his services, enlisting on 23 June 1942 - having spent some time convincing the RAAF that there were roles that he could undertake successfully. Following training at the RAAF Bombing and Gunnery School he was soon on his way to the UK, sailing on 24 August from Sydney. He was soon serving at RAF Breighton in Yorkshire with 460 Sqn RAAF as rear gunner in an Avro Lancaster bomber. As he walked to the aircraft he used his crutches; onboard he would crawl to his post in the tail. On the night of 22/23 October 1943, aboard W4927, his Lancaster left Binbrook for a bombing raid over Germany. Above Kassel, the target, a Lancaster bomber above them dropped its bombs. Two incendiary bombs dropped through W4927; one hitting the flight engineer's jump seat - beside the pilot - the other falling through the middle of the aeroplane and severing the oxygen supply to the rear and mid-upper turrets - the former being Dunstan's. A German night fighter chose this moment to attack W4927. Befuddled by lack of oxygen the gunners were unable to shoot, W4927 losing its port elevator and receiving holes in its port wing and fuselage - and one cannon shell went into Dunstan's rear turret. However the pilot nursed the plane back to England, where it crash landed at either RAF Elsham Wold, or Bisham - sources vary. On 3/4 November 1943 Dunstan completed his thirtieth mission, to Dusseldorf, the day before his twenty-first birthday. He was gazetted for his DSO on 7 November. In 1944 he returned to Australia and in 1956 was elected to the Victoria State Parliament where he held ministerial posts for water supply, and subsequently for public works. -
George Bissill (1896-1973) Rolling hills in the countryside
Watercolour 20 x 28 cm Signed to bottom right Born in 1896, George Bissill was a British miner, painter and furniture designer. Raised in the mining village of Langley Mill, Derbyshire, Bissill became a miner at the age of 13, before leaving to join the war effort in 1915. Upon his return from the war after being gassed, Bissill chose to become a pavement artist outside the newly erected Bush House in Aldwych, painting from his memory and his sketch book the uncompromising underground world he had inhabited. In 1935 he moved to the countryside near Newbury, where he lived and worked as a landscape painter, art restorer and dealer until his death in 1973. This watercolour forms part of a larger collection, 'unseen since they were taken from George Bissil's studio in 1983' and restored by Kate Pattinson. A series of planned exhibitions were cancelled due to Covid, but two shows, one in Oxford and one in Ilkeston, did take place. Through such exhibitions, Pattinson hoped to 'restore the reputation of an artist who, through mighty endeavour, conquered the art world in the 1920s with his powerful, authentic and experimental pictures.' Bissill's paintings are also held in a number of important public collections, including the Tate Gallery, National Museum of Ireland and the Manchester Art Gallery. In this watercolour, one colour blends beautifully into the next, as the green rolling hills of the foreground shift into the dark blue fields of the background. What is particularly striking about this painting, however, is Bissill's brushwork. Each individual stroke of the tumultuous sky is distinguishable from the next. This suggests Bissill's high speed of working as he attempts to capture the atmosphere of this countryside scene, perhaps as he works in the manner of the French impressionists. ROSEMARY ELLIS (1910-1988) Born in North London in 1910, Rosemary’s father died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1919 and the family moved in with her mother’s parents in the New Forest. This was an environment where she grew to love nature and animals, constant themes in her artistic works. In 1928 she began studying art at the Regent Street Polytechnic, meeting her tutor Clifford Ellis – a mere three years her senior, who was to become her husband and life-long artistic collaborator. They married in 1931 and after this date almost all their freelance work bears both their signatures. They developed a joint cipher, C&RE, which includes their names in alphabetical order, not representing any order of seniority. They produced posters in the 1930s for big clients such as London Transport, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board. Clifford Ellis became head of Bath School of Art, and then served during the Second World War as camoufleur and official war artist – with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary was also an official war artist, working on the Recording Britain project whereby artists were set to record the buildings and landscape of Britain lest it be permanently damaged by the Germans. Following the war Lyons Tearooms chose the Ellises to produce one of their famous lithographs, to be hung in their tearooms and the Ellises chose a view of Teignmouth – we have some views of Teignmouth for sale painted from this time. Rowland Hilder
Shell Guide to Warwickshire Original poster c. 1960s 76x51cm Shell commissioned a series of posters to go with their County Guide books, and they commissioned paintings by the leading artists of the day. Rowland Hilder was a well known landscape artist and book illustrator. Born in New York state, his English father moved the family to Kent, England in 1915. It was here his natural talent for drawing was noticed by his school. Later Hilder went to study at Goldsmith’s College in London. He was well known as an accomplished watercolorist, particularly in his sensitive handling of the sky and earth. Between 1964 and 1974 he was president of England’s Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Rowland Suddaby (1912-1972) English Roses - Still Life
Oil on board 39x29cm (frame 58x46cm) c. 1950s Artist's label to reverse In a fine hand-finished frame Born in Kimberworth, Yorkshire, Suddaby commenced study in 1926 at the Sheffield College of Art on a scholarship, coming to London at nineteen in 1931. Following an early marriage and an initial struggle as an artist his first successful show was at the Wertheim Gallery in London in 1935, followed by a series of shows at the Redfern Gallery from 1936. For the latter he was their replacement for Christopher Wood (who had sadly killed himself in 1930 by jumping under a train) and he painted assured oils and watercolours - some showing Wood influences - in London and Cornwall. Popular with both art critics and the buying public he had great success. Early in World War Two, Suddaby moved - with his family - to the Suffolk countryside near Sudbury to become curator of the Gainsborough's House Museum, East Anglia providing him with the foundations for the pictures for which he is now well known. In 1940 he was chosen for the 'Recording Britain' project. Showing something of the influence of John Nash, his distinctive depiction of the East Anglian countryside, with its hedges and fences is instantly recognisable. His still life paintings which he also painted in the 1940s and 50s were exhibited at the Leger Galleries and at the Colchester Art Society of which he was a founder member. By the 1960s he had evolved his style towards abstraction. He was also a noted designer, producing textiles and furnishings and designing posters for Shell. Roy Carnon (1911-2002) Derelict Catalina Redhills Lake near Madras

This 1946 painting of a derelict Second World War aircraft is a portrait of postwar disillusionment. The battered Catalinas which had survived the war became useful only as ground-based objects for target practice. Carnon's brooding colours and impasto application of paint illustrate how the technologies which helped the Allies to win the war became, overnight, unnecessary. The airmen based in India similarly became unnecessary, but unable to be demobilised they initiated the so-called RAF Mutiny in January 1946. Carnon attended Chiswick Art School becoming an illustrator. In 1965 he was responsible for visualising spacecraft for 2001: A Space Odyssey, being designer of the iconic 'wheel' spacestation. Gray’s design for this memorial window commemorates the lives of those lost in the Langenbruck bus crash, 11 February 1985, when a double-decker bus carrying 40 musicians from the band of Royal Air Force Germany, crashed on an autobahn between Nuremberg and Munich. Twenty-one of the occupants were killed in the crash. As the text in the design remembers: this window is ‘In memory of our friends of the Band of the Royal Air Force Germany who lost their lives in the tragic Autobahn accident near Munich on 11 February 1985’.

Original vintage poster 101 x 63 cm A text poster advertising Southern Railway as a means of travelling to and from Royal Ascot. Graham Sutherland OM was an English artist known for his romantic, abstract landscapes and portraits of public figures, including Churchill and the Queen Mother. Sutherland spent the 1920s mostly making landscape prints, but, following the collapse of the print market in the early 1930s branched out into watercolours. He also undertook a few commercial commissions for posters, working for London Transport, Shell and others. He served as an official war artist in the Second World War, painting industrial scenes on the British home front. After the war he worked in oils and explored figurative painting. A Searle Royal Richmond Horse Show

Halliwell Little is known about A Searle beyond the fact that he studied under A E Halliwell, though the fact that Halliwell collected this painting suggests that he thought highly of his student. This playful Underground poster design advertises the Royal Richmond Horse Show. It features a horse and flags with an abstracted jockey. The whole composition is somewhat musical, with colourful lines behind the text evoking a musical stave and the body of the jockey calling to mind musical notes. Painted in the lower right in muted greens is the iconic Underground roundel, signalling the poster's original purpose. Original vintage poster 76 x 50 cm A delightfully quaint vintage poster with a series of important and relevant pedestrian safety messages. From its foundation in 1916 onwards, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents published dozens of highly artistic posters encouraging people to take precautions and prevent injuries (for example, telling factory workers to wear goggles and inspect their tools, or advising drivers to watch out for children in the road). This poster advises those visiting the country to use footpaths and cross roads carefully, and suggests that city-dwellers walk on pavements and only cross at pedestrian crossings.
