Lithographic poster 32 x 26 cm "If you sometimes wonder whether you still enjoy being battered about on a Sunday afternoon quite as much as you did, why not give a thought to refereeing - which would allow you to keep up a connection with the game of games, and do a very useful job for it too." Fougasse was a British cartoonist. He was art editor of Punch between 1937 and 1949, and subsequently editor until 1953. He is best known for his ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ series of posters, and the other posters for the Ministry of Information and London Transport. As the Second World War progressed, the Ministry of Information’s poster campaign had become less and less effective. There were posters instructing the population to save old clothes for rags, turn off the lights, save food, dig for victory, watch out for spies, and keep calm and carry on. With this instruction overload, the population had ceased paying attention to the posters. Fougasse noticed this, and offered his services unpaid to the Ministry of Information, with a view to bringing a touch of humour to the posters. His amusing designs with pithy captions, reminiscent of newspaper cartoons, helped to get the Ministry's messages across in a novel way.Fougasse's distinctive poster style, with the red border, was subsequently adopted by other Ministry artists.Condition: backed to linen; generally excellent. Gloria Jarvis A Fateful Debate in the House of Commons, led by Winston Churchill (1940)
Lithograph 42 x 54 cm Gloria Jarvis (1925-2014) was a painter born in Acton, West London. She studied at St. Martin's School of Art, 1942-50 where her tutors included James Bateman and James Guthrie. She also attended the University of Florence, 1960-61 for a course of the History of Art and during the period 1950-63 she taught history of costume design at London’s Regent Street Polytechnic. She has also exhibited at the RA, NEAC, NS and at Leicester Galleries. This particular design features Winston Churchill standing up and giving a speech to the other politicians in the Houses of Parliament. Papers are scattered around the room and the atmosphere seems dark and heavy, alluding to the tense political situation during the Second World War. -
Anonymous St Paul's Survives, Night Blitz in London - 1940
Lithograph For Macmillan's History Pictures, c. 1960 42 x 54 cm This striking lithograph depicts St Paul's Cathedral in London peaking through the swathes of smoke engulfing the city after a night of bombing during the blitz. The sky is illuminated by floodlights and flames, but the cathedral itself seems to provide its own light source, standing out against the destruction surrounding it. Although the source of this lithograph is unknown, it was likely produced after Herbert Mason's photograph 'St Paul's Survives', taken during the night air raid of the 29th-30th of December 1940, the night of the 'Second Great Fire of London.' The photograph has become a symbol of British resilience and courage, and is considered one of the iconic images of the Blitz. It became "instantly famous", and turned the Cathedral into "a symbol of togetherness, survival and suffering". During the Second World War, Winston Churchill declared that St Paul's must be protected at all costs to preserve morale. As a result, a team of 300 volunteers came together under the name of 'the St Paul's Watch' and, armed with sandbags and hoses, worked to extinguish the incendiaries raining down on the cathedral. -

Lithograph 31 x 47 cm Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs was a British etcher, draughtsman, and illustrator known for his highly detailed and atmospheric depictions of the English countryside. Born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, in 1876, he trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London before working as an illustrator for The Highways and Byways book series. Griggs became one of the leading figures of the British etching revival in the early 20th century. His works, often depicting medieval-inspired landscapes and architectural scenes, evoke a deep sense of nostalgia and romanticism. His meticulous technique and ability to capture mood through fine lines and shading earned him a place in the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. Later in life, he settled in Chipping Campden, where he dedicated himself to preserving traditional English architecture. His etchings remain celebrated for their poetic detail and craftsmanship. Griggs passed away in 1938, leaving behind a legacy as one of Britain’s finest etchers. This lithograph of an etching he completed of Lady Margaret Hall depicts the entrance of the college. His attention to detail is clear as he captures the minutiae of the college's masonry, surrounding the circular window on the façade, for example. He also captures the unique atmosphere of the early 19th century, depicting two well-dressed women walking down the street. As one of the more modern Oxford colleges, founded in 1878 as one of the first two lady's colleges, Lady Margaret Hall it is rare for Lady Margaret Hall to be depicted by such distinguished artists, making this lithograph a unique find. Carl Hansen & Søn commissioned the poster from a photograph by Salomonsen, a 1960s photographer. The stylish and typically Danish woman examining the chair marks it as a piece of typically Danish design. The chair was known as "The Chair" when it was used in the TV-transmitted debate between John F Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1959. 'Foot of a Statue'
Plaster 9 x 19 x 13 cm Paolozzi’s fascination with anatomy, machine parts, and the idiom of classical statuary is evident in his modernist sculptural forms. Foot of a Statue suggests the foot of an ancient Colossus - severed from the rest of the body, it becomes a symbol of fragmentation, of a civilisation’s decline. Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi CBE RA was a Scottish artist, known for his sculpture and graphic works. He is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of pop art. Paolozzi studied at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1943, briefly at Saint Martin's School of Art in 1944, and then at the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London from 1944 to 1947, after which he worked in Paris. While in Paris from 1947 to 1949, Paolozzi became acquainted with Alberto Giacometti, Jean Arp, Constantin Brâncuși, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger. This period became an important influence for his later work. For example, the influence of Giacometti and many of the original Surrealists he met in Paris can be felt in the group of lost-wax sculptures made by Paolozzi in the mid-1950s. Their surfaces, studded with found objects and machine parts, were to gain him recognition. He taught sculpture and ceramics at several institutions, including the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (1960–62), University of California, Berkeley (in 1968) and at the Royal College of Art. Paolozzi had a long association with Germany, having worked in Berlin from 1974 as part of the Berlin Artist Programme of the German Academic Exchange Programme. He was a professor at the Fachhochschule in Cologne from 1977 to 1981, and later taught sculpture at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich. Paolozzi was fond of Munich and many of his works and concept plans were developed in a studio he kept there, including the mosaics of the Tottenham Court Road Station in London. He took a stab at industrial design in the 1970s with a 500-piece run of the upscale Suomi tableware by Timo Sarpaneva that Paolozzi decorated for the German Rosenthal porcelain maker's Studio Linie. Claude Muncaster (1903-1974) Shap Farmhouse
Watercolour 19 x 29 cm Signed and inscribed to reverse. Here Muncaster records a farmhouse in the Market Town of Shap in Cumbria. This remote village has had a market charter since the seventeenth century. Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS, ROI, RBA, SMA was the son of Oliver Hall RA. At the age of fifteen his career as a landscape painter began, and he soon took to the seas, spending the 1920s and 30s travelling the world with his sketchbook in a series of vessels. With the outbreak of war and he joined the RNVR training as a navigator. Having left school at fifteen his mathematics was very weak and it was a relief for all when his artistic talents meant he was recruited as a camofleur. A master of capturing seascapes he was therefore able to hide huge ships ‘in plain sight’ with clever disguises. After the war he painted for the Royal Family and was a frequent guest at Sandringham. Claude Muncaster was a watercolourist known for his landscapes and maritime scenes. He was born Grahame Hall, the son of the Royal Academician Oliver Hall who taught his son to paint from an early age; Grahame first exhibited his work aged 15 and a few years later was showing at the RA. However, he adopted the name Claude Muncaster in 1922 to dissociate his career from that of his father. Muncaster’s primary choice of subject matter came from a genuine love of the sea. He made several long-distance sea voyages, including one around the Horn as a deckhand in the windjammer Olivebank in 1931, which he described in ‘Rolling Round the Horn’, published in 1933. Armed with a sketchbook, his aim was to be able to ‘paint ships and the sea with greater authority’. This he certainly achieved, perfectly capturing the limpid first light of morning over the Port of Aden, the choppy rain-grey waters of the Bay of Biscay and a streak of sunlight through gathering storm clouds at dusk in Exeter. He became an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1931 and was a founder member, and later President, of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. During the Second World War, Muncaster served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) from 1940-44, training as a navigator before going on to advise on the camouflage of ships, and also worked as an official war artist. In ‘Still Morning at Aden’ (1944) he depicts Allied warships in this safe anchorage in the Middle East; the back is stamped with Admiralty approval. In 1946-7 he was commissioned by the Queen to produce watercolours of the royal residences at Windsor, Sandringham and Balmoral; the Duke of Edinburgh, in a foreword to a biography of Muncaster, recalls looking at these and considering the artist’s ‘unerring instinct for a subject’, his sense of atmosphere. Other commissions included large panoramas of the Thames and of Bradford. His career also included work as an etcher, illustrator, writer, lecturer and broadcaster, and his paintings can be found in the Royal Academy, Tate, National Maritime Museum Cornwall, National Railway Museum and Royal Air Force Museum. A copy of this print is in the National Trust's collection at Anglesea Abbey, from Lord Fairhaven's extraordinary collection of views of Windsor Castle. -

In 1902, he produced a series of watercolour, chalk, and pen drawings of Oxford which were published in 1905 by the Stafford Gallery as two portfolios of lithographs, with descriptions by Arthur Waugh (father of Evelyn Waugh). Here the ancient scheduled monument of Cardiff castle is made to feel both grand and imposing, yet reflecting the softness of the countryside. A few elegant motorcars are parked before it. Original vintage poster 100 x 62 cm Commissioned by the Ministère des Travaux Publics et des Transports and the Commissariat général au Tourisme. Printed in France, by and for the French Government. Printed by Braun & Cie, Mulhouse-Paris. This poster, featuring a Utrillo painting of Reims Cathedral, was printed by the French tourist board to encourage holidays to France. Utrillo's depiction of Reims is highly post-impressionist, with thick layers of impasto and an inventive colour palette. Maurice Utrillo was a French painter who specialised in post-impressionist cityscapes, particularly of Montmartre, where he lived. His mother was Suzanne Valadon, an artist's model who sat for several French painters, including Renoir. Utrillo's father is unknown, though the painter Miquel Utrillo acknowledged him as his own some years after his birth. Valedon became a painter herself after several years of modelling, and was mentored by Degas. She encouraged her son to become a painter, and he received positive critical attention in the 1910s, followed by international popularity in the following decade. He was awarded the Cross of the Légion d'Honneur in 1928 and is today known for his poetic depictions of Paris, especially Montmartre. He is buried there, in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent, having suffered from mental illness and alcoholism for most of his life. Condition: generally very good; a few tiny repaired edge tears. Lithograph 51 x 67 cm Signed in pencil lower left. Snaffles was one of the foremost sporting artists of his era, publishing many popular prints such as these: hunting pictures, racing scenes, and military subjects. Snaffles' distinctive drawing style is emphasised by his 'remarque' - sketches in the margin - and his witty titles. Condition: generally very good; crease to top left corner; slight unevenness to bottom edge; a few scratches to frame. -

Johannes 'Joan' Blaeu (1596 - 1673)

Engraving with later hand-colouring 43 x 52 cm A decorative map of Northumberland by the celebrated Dutch mapmaker and artist Joan Blaeu, (son of the cartographer Willem Blaeu). Crests of the local gentry appear in the top right hand corner. Blaeu moved to Amsterdam in 1920 to join the family firm of mapmakers. In 1635, the business published the Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus in two volumes - the largest and most expensive book published in the seventeenth century, and the venture for which the Blaeu were most famed. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638; Joan became the official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company, as his father had been before him. Pencil, ink, whitening 72 x 106 cm An architectural design for a public building, with room numbers labelled in red. Osman's detailed and precise mark-making makes for an elegant and artistic design. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. He studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture; he was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group), and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC. Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1831)
Crystal Palace - View from The North Bank of the Serpentine
Tinted Lithograph 31 x 46 cm A nineteenth-century view of Crystal Palace from the north bank of the Serpentine. This unique edition intriguingly captures the stir of movement across the bustling riverside promenade, with well-dressed ladies, horse-drawn carriages and chivalrous gentleman at the fore. Rudolph Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school at 96 Strand. Here, Ackermann set up a lithographic press and began a trade in prints. He later began to manufacture colours and thick carton paper for landscape and miniature painters. Within three years the premises had become too small and he moved to 101 Strand, in his own words "four doors nearer to Somerset House", the seat of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints. -
