    The Sound of Scarp and Vision of Bernadette (c.1980) (Double sided)

    24 x 26 cm Watercolour Norman Adams RA, former professor of painting at the Royal Academy, felt strongly that, "art [without religion] would be a pretty empty vocation." Despite not going to church, nor identifying with any specific belief system, the artist's paintings of the natural world, often dramatic in nature, betray a strong spiritual intensity. On one side of this watercolour Adams has painted a monumental wave crash, captioned 'Southwest Wind - Very Rough Sea The Sea of Scarp.' On the other, is a softer, lilac abstraction entitled 'Vision of Bernadette', a reference to Saint Bernadette's famous visions of Mary at the Lourdes grotto. He studied at Harrow School of Art (1940-46) and then the Royal College of Art (1948-51). His first solo show was at Gimpel Fils in 1952, and his last at the Fine Art Society in 2004. His works included many murals and stage designs. There are many of his major works in the national collection, including the Tate, Leeds Museums, The Whitworth, the Royal College of Art, Bristol Museums, Leicester Museums, The Royal Academy and the Hepworth, Wakefield.

    Brian Bannatyne Lewis (1906 - 1991)

    North Acton Station (1938)

      Pen, ink and watercolour 70 x 50 cm Initialled and dated 26 2 38. A 1938 design for the new North Acton tube station, commissioned by the Great Western Railway (GWR) for its proposed western extension to the Central Line. The design's Art Deco lettering befits London Transport's aesthetic in the 1930s. Lewis brings his designs to life by including smartly-dressed characters entering and leaving the stations. The Central line opened in 1900, between Shepherd's Bush and Bank; it extended westwards to Ealing Broadway in 1920. Two years after the formation of London Transport in 1933, an extensive New Works Programme began, proposing a westwards extension of the line to Denham. Brian Lewis created designs for nine stations in early 1938, but the Second World War broke out before they could be built. By the time the extension had been built, Lewis was no longer chief architect of the GWR - the stations were modified and completed by Frederick Francis Charles Curtis instead. The extension to Greenford opened in 1947 and finally reached West Ruislip in 1948. Denham never actually became part of the tube line, owing to the establishment of the green belt. Brian Lewis was born in Tasmania, attended school in Melbourne, and subsequently obtained a Diploma in Architecture in 1928 from the University of Melbourne. He then moved to the UK to study at the Liverpool School of Architecture, winning scholarships in each of his three years of study to fund extensive European travel. He married a fellow Liverpool architectural student, Hilary Archer. After moving to London, he took up employment with the GWR in their architects’ office; he also lectured at a local polytechnic, and moonlighted with his wife at home on mainly residential commissions – rather different projects from the hotels and stations which GWR commissioned from him. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy of Arts, showing superb measured drawings of historic buildings. In the Second World War he enlisted with the Second Imperial Australian Force, serving in the Middle East, then transferred to the Royal Australian Engineers where he became a Captain. In 1943 he was sent to London to help GWR repair bomb damage.  Lewis became Chief Architect of GWR in 1945 (following the retirement of the noted Percy Emerson Culverhouse), and the first Chair of Architecture at Melbourne University in 1947. He also became the consulting architect for the major buildings of the Australian National University in Canberra, producing an imaginative site plan and designing University House, which was awarded the Sulman medal in 1954. He also designed the Risdon Prison Complex in 1960. He retired in 1971 to paint watercolours and write his memoirs. Condition: generally very good; a few handling marks and two holes from filing.     Gray left little information about this design but it is possibly for a shopping centre or similar building. Nevertheless, this design perfectly captures Gray’s colourful and quintessentially modern style and approach to stained glass window design. Here, Gray uses a few key colours, strong lines, and geometrical elements to construct her multi-panelled, lettered design.

  • John Dixon Scott Norwich, Elm Hill

    76 x 51 cm Lithograph Published by the Travel Association of Great Britain and N.Ireland this beautiful photographic image encouraged travel to Norwich and the United Kingdom more generally. This poster was part of a broader series released in 1947/48 by the British Travel Association to coincide with the 1948 Olympic Games in London in an effort to bring international tourism back to the United Kingdom after the Second World War. John Dixon Scott (1890–1977) was a British photographer known for his extensive documentation of the British countryside, landscapes, and rural life. In the late 1920s, Scott became concerned at the way the rural and urban environment of Britain was changing. As a result, he decided to drive around the country with his camera, intending to preserve through his pictures what he saw as a vanishing landscape. This project occupied him for the rest of his career, resulting in images including the photograph pictured. Condition: Generally excellent, the odd minor handling mark.

  • Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988) Notre Dame

    Etching and aquatint, stamped signature, numbered 42/50 35 x 48 cm Nephew of the historian G M Trevelyan, he was educated at Bedales and Trinity College, Cambridge, reading English. Moving to Paris and becoming an artist, studying engraving at Stanley William Hayter’s school he worked alongside artists such as Max Ernst, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso. Marrying the potter Ursula Darwin in 1934, in 1935 they moved to Hammersmith, buying Durham Wharf beside the River Thames which was Trevelyan’s studio – and home – for the rest of his life. His wartime service was – like so many artists – as a camofleur. A Royal Engineer from 1940-43, he served in North Africa and Palestine, forcing the German Afrika Korps to use resources against a dummy army whilst real tanks were disguised as more harmless equipment. In the desert nothing could be hidden, but it could be disguised. On one occasion however the German Luftwaffe flattened a real installation, leaving only a – dummy – railhead the camofleurs had built. The following day they returned and dropped a wooden bomb on the railhead making it clear they had seen through the disguise. Following the dissolution of his marriage in 1950 he married the painter Mary Fedden. Teaching at Chelsea School of Art Trevelyan eventually became head of the Etching Department and his pupils included David Hockney and Peter Ackroyd. This particular edition depicts a view of the rear of the Notre Dame de Paris. Three fishermen line the promenade and the Square de l'Ile de France protrudes into the Seine, this combined with the curved river bank gives almost a sense of three dimensionality to the etching, as is characteristic of Trevelyan's playful manipulations of perspective.

        Original vintage poster 100 x 63 cm Printed in Germany. This magnificent poster advertises the Passion Play (an outdoor play telling the Easter story) held every ten years in Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps. Tradition tells that the town was struck with plague in 1633; the townsfolk vowed that they would perform a Passion Play every ten years as a symbol of thanks to God if the plague would end, which it did. At the turn of the twentieth century, improved railways across Europe meant that people from outside the Alps could travel to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau. This poster was designed for publication in France, to encourage the French to come to see the play. Condition: generally very good; a few tiny repaired edge tears. Not backed.   • Jane Carpanini Old Court, Selwyn College

    Lithograph 30 x 42 cm Born in Bedfordshire, Jane Carpanini studied at Brighton College of Art and the University of Reading. Since the start of her career she has been known for meticulous architectural paintings. Wales has been a favourite subject and she has paintings in the collections of the National Library of Wales and National Museum of Wales. Her renowned series of views of Oxford and Cambridge Colleges were published by Contemporary Watercolours and have since featured regularly in the Oxford and Cambridge Today magazines. Throughout her career, Carpanini has exhibited widely and her work is held by many public and private collections both in the UK and abroad. She was a regular exhibitor with the major Societies and was the first woman officer of the Royal Watercolour Society, serving as the Honorary Treasurer and also as Vice-President. In 2003 she was also nominated for the Presidency of the RWS becoming the first ever female candidate for the post. This lithograph depicts a sunny day over the Old Court at Selwyn College, featuring the Chapel, Master's Lodge and the Hall, recognisable by its distinctive stairs. A few students or academics wander round the periphery, perhaps enjoying this summery Cambridge scene. Condition: generally very good, can come framed.

      Oil on board 56 x 43 cm Signed lower left. A fantasia inspired by Old London Bridge on the Thames. The grey dome of St Paul's peeps over the bridge; bright lights burn in the background, throwing yellows and red reflections onto the water. Moored boats bob gently in the foreground. Stones was educated at the Chelsea School of Art, and was a member of an artistic dynasty. Her mother Dorothy Bradshaw (1893-1983) studied under Jack Merriott – the artist famous for his British Rail posters, and her son, Christopher Assheton-Stones (1947-1999), was arguably the foremost pastel artist of his time.   • Bernard Cecil Gotch (1876-1964)

    The Bodleian Library, Oxford: Passageway into the Old Schools Quandrangle

      Watercolour 49 x 35 cm Signed in pencil lower right. An enticing view of the passageway leading into the Old Schools Quad of the Bodleian Library. Through the gateway, we see the passageway leading out of the Quad onto the other side, into Radcliffe Square. A glimpse of the Radcliffe Camera, surrounded by its green lawn, is visible through the two passages. Bernard Cecil Gotch was a Winchester-born artist who is best known for his atmospheric watercolours of Britain's towns and cities (most notably Oxford). He moved to Oxford in 1927, painting many watercolours of the interiors and exteriors of Oxford’s many buildings. His works concentrate on the grand exteriors and interiors of the University's colleges, and he exhibited frequently - including an exhibition every term at Oriel College. His first notable commission was for the publisher Methuen, illustrating 'A Shepherd’s Life' by W H Hudson. Whilst in London he was invited to illustrate a book on the Public Schools of England (which was sadly never completed). He exhibited watercolours at the Fine Art Society and Lincolns Inn, and also exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1952 Gotch was given an Honorary MA by the University of Oxford, and, after his death in 1963, a memorial was held for him at Oriel. Condition: very good. Framed, with washline mount. Having studied at the RCA between 1887-90 he attended evening classes at Westminster and Lambeth Schools of Art. Travelling extensively in Spain, France and Italy he began exhibiting etchings at the RA in 1890. Originally from Pulborough he moved in later life to Ulverston, Lancashire.       Engraving 35 x 43 cm This fantasia on Oriel, featuring a sublime rendering of the College's architecture and a parade of sound Oriel men, was featured in the 1736 edition of the Oxford Almanack. The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanack published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to "dwindling interest"). The almanack traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanack artists have included Michael Burghers, J. M. W.       Engraving 12 x 16 cm An eighteenth-century view of Oriel College, engraved by Pieter van der Aa after David Loggan, the noted engraver, draughtsman, and painter. Pieter van der Aa of Leiden was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He is noted for the many engravings he produced after David Loggan's series of Oxford and Cambridge colleges and costumes.       Lithograph 30 x 37 cm Initialled and dated lower right. Between 1902 and 1904 William Nicholson lived in Woodstock; during this period he made several architectural studies of Oxford's colleges and other University buildings. Sir William Nicholson was a British painter and printmaker. He is also known as an illustrator, author of children’s books, stained glass designer, and theatre set designer.     Oriel Square, Oxford, at the entrance to Bear Lane

      Watercolour 27 x 36.5 cm Signed in pencil lower left. Oriel Square in the afternoon. Two undergraduates lean against the walls of Oriel College, talking, and another group make their way inside. Vintage cars (dating the picture to the 1920s, or 1930s?) are parked outside its gates, and the Oriel flag flies high. Bernard Cecil Gotch was a Winchester-born artist who is best known for his atmospheric watercolours of Britain's towns and cities (most notably Oxford). He moved to Oxford in 1927, painting many watercolours of the interiors and exteriors of Oxford’s many buildings. His works concentrate on the grand exteriors and interiors of the University's colleges, and he exhibited frequently - including an exhibition every term at Oriel College. His first notable commission was for the publisher Methuen, illustrating 'A Shepherd’s Life' by W H Hudson. Whilst in London he was invited to illustrate a book on the Public Schools of England (which was sadly never completed). He exhibited watercolours at the Fine Art Society and Lincolns Inn, and also exhibited at the Royal Academy. In 1952 Gotch was given an Honorary MA by the University of Oxford, and, after his death in 1963, a memorial was held for him at Oriel. Condition: very good.     Oriel Street (1974)

      Watercolour 39 x 21 cm Signed and dated lower right. The painter and draughtsman Ken Messer is closely related to Oxford and its architecture in several ways. Born in Newport, South Wales, he was educated at the City of Oxford High School for Boys in Oxford, and then spent six years working as an accountant in Oxford. He then joined British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a steward, flying internationally. Injury due to a car accident during the 1960s meant that he joined the design department of Pergamon Press in Oxford at the age of 33. Six years later, he was appointed to the position of studio manager, in charge of art and design. In 1974, Messer left Pergamon Press to become a freelance graphic designer. He started painting more watercolours, becoming a full-time artist. During the 1980s, his ink drawings were regularly published in the Oxford Times. He has sometimes been called "The Oxford Artist" because of his large number of works depicting Oxford. He and his wife Dilys lived at first in Richmond upon Thames and then in Abingdon, just south of Oxford. Messer's work has been shown at the Mall Galleries for the annual exhibitions of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours annual exhibitions. Condition: very good.   • Jack Coggins Aircraft Insignia

    Original vintage poster, lithograph 60 x 45 cm Signed in image to bottom right This original vintage World War Two propaganda poster was initially commissioned by the army as an aircraft recognition chart for use in basic army training. It showcases different aircraft insignia identification markings with various types of military planes flying over an ominous grey sky. Among others, this poster illustrates a Fokker, B24, Stirling, Hurricane, Messerschmitt and Mitsubishi, surrounded by a colourful border of aircraft insignia including the British Empire, France, Germany, Japan, Russia and the United States. Jack Coggins (1911- 2006) was a British artist, author, and illustrator who moved to the United States in 1923 and enlisted with the army in 1943. He is known in the United States both for his oil paintings, which focused predominantly on marine subjects and for his books on space travel, which he authored and illustrated. Throughout his career he also provided illustrations for advertisements, magazine covers and articles. During the Second World War, he served as an artist and correspondent for YANK magazine, capturing and conveying wartime scenes from the front lines. For other propaganda posters, click here.
