    36x23cm Pen, ink and watercolour Provenance: the family of the artist, by descent. ROSEMARY ELLIS (1910-1988) Born in North London in 1910, Rosemary’s father died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1919 and the family moved in with her mother’s parents in the New Forest. This was an environment where she grew to love nature and animals, constant themes in her artistic works. In 1928 she began studying art at the Regent Street Polytechnic, meeting her tutor Clifford Ellis – a mere three years her senior, who was to become her husband and life-long artistic collaborator. They married in 1931 and after this date almost all their freelance work bears both their signatures. They developed a joint cipher, C&RE, which includes their names in alphabetical order, not representing any order of seniority. They produced posters in the 1930s for big clients such as London Transport, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board. Clifford Ellis became head of Bath School of Art, and then served during the Second World War as camoufleur and official war artist – with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary was also an official war artist, working on the Recording Britain project whereby artists were set to record the buildings and landscape of Britain lest it be permanently damaged by the Germans. Following the war Lyons Tearooms chose the Ellises to produce one of their famous lithographs, to be hung in their tearooms and the Ellises chose a view of Teignmouth – we have some views of Teignmouth for sale painted from this time.     35x50cm Engraving (1715-1725) from 'Vitruvius Britannicus, or the British Architect...' Althorp Hall - as it is now written, but still pronounced 'Althrop' - is the seat of the Earl Spencer and the location of the grave of Diana, Princess of Wales. Colen Campbell was a Scottish architect and architectural writer, renowned for being a founder of the Georgian style. His major published work was 'Vitruvius Britannicus' which was a catalogue of design, containing a series of engravings of English buildings by Inigo Jones, Sir Christopher Wren, Campbell himself and other prominent architects of the era. It was published in three volumes between 1715 and 1725.

    Designs for scarf for Bianchini Ferrier Bull Fighting 31x15cm Gouache and pencil Provenance: Christies, 25-27 July 2001 Bianchini Textiles sale Born in Paris, Bonfils spent between 1903-1909 at various Parisian art schools: the École Germain Pilon, the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (where he subsequently taught for thirty-two years), and the École des Beaux Arts. From 1909 he exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, by 1912 he was exhibiting at Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and then subsequently at Tuileries and abroad. He was an organiser of the 1925 Paris International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts, and the 1937 Exposition. His relationship with Bianchini commenced in 1915 who produced many of his textile designs. He was made Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1926, being promoted to Officier in 1938.

At the time the poster was printed the main location for deployment of tanks was West Germany. In 1946 the British Army of the Rhine was created to protect Germany - and indeed Europe - from a Soviet invasion. A Lionel Edwards lithograph depicting the Beaufort - part of the artist's 1925 'Hunting Countries' series. The Beaufort's hunt dress is peculiar to the country in that the Huntsman and Whippers-In wear green and the subscribers a blue coat with buff facings. The earliest records of hounds being kennelled at Badminton date back to 1640 when the then Marquis of Worcester hunted mainly deer, but hare and fox as well. Dukes of Beaufort have either hunted hounds themselves or have been in the Mastership since the title was created in 1682 and the hounds, kennels and stables still belong to them. The 10th Duke was master from 1924 to 1984 and so great was his contribution to foxhunting he became universally known as "Master". The Beaufort is one of the few remaining private packs. Lionel Edwards was a British artist who specialised in pictures of country life, particularly horses, and provided illustrations for Country Life. He is best known for his hunting scenes but also painted pictures of horse racing, shooting and fishing. Condition: generally very good; some fading to the clouds.       Original vintage poster 60 x 40 cm The Basilique Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d'Albi (Cathedral Basilica of Saint Cecilia), also known as Albi Cathedral, is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Albi. First built in the aftermath of the Albigensian Crusade, the grim exterior resembles a fortress, but the interior is lavishly decorated with art and sculpture, a very ornate choir screen, and walls in bright blues and golds, in the Toulousian or Southern French Gothic. It was begun in 1282 and was under construction for 200 years. It is claimed to be the largest brick building in the world. In 2010 the cathedral, along with its episcopal buildings, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique architecture and the remarkable consistency in its design.     Llangollen Bridge, Wales (early 19th century)

    Pen, ink and monochrome watercolour 8 x 12 cm   Llangollen Bridge is built across the River Dee at the North end of the high street of Llangollen in the county of Denbigshire in Wales. The Bridge is listed as one of the seven wonders of Wales and is Grade I listed. There has been a bridge across the Dee at Llangollen since at least 1284. Some historians believe that the bridge was constructed in the 1540s; there is evidence of sepulchral slabs within the bridge's masonry, indicating that it was rebuilt following the dissolution of Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. We also have in stock an en-suite watercolour of the nearby Valle Crucis abbey, from which some of the bridge's stone might have been taken. Condition: Generally very good. Signed lower right.

    Valle Crucis Abbey, Wales (early 19th century)

    Pen, ink and monochrome watercolour 8 x 12 cm   Valle Crucis is a Cistercian abbey located in Llantysilio in Denbighshire, Wales. The abbey was built in 1201 by Madog ap Gruffydd Maelor, Prince of Powys Fadog. In 1537, at the height of Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, Valle Crucis was dissolved and fell into disrepair. The abbey is now a ruin, though large parts of the original structure still survive. We also have in stock an en-suite watercolour of the nearby Llangollen Bridge; it is likely that some of the abbey's stone was used to build the bridge after the abbey had been dissolved.       Gouache on board 20 x 11.5 cm After a Communist takeover in 1945, Bulgaria was a Soviet ally during the Cold War, and maintained good relationships with Russia until the Revolutions of 1989. From 1945 to 1948, the country became entrenched within the Soviet sphere of influence under the control of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) which oversaw a program of Stalinization in the late 1940s and 1950s. Both countries are Slavic nations, and are bound together by a common Orthodox Christian culture. This poster design is a piece of Leninist propaganda, designed to make Bulgarians associate Lenin and Soviet Marxist rule with efficiency and plenty. It is inscribed to the reverse in Bulgarian 'To grow plants in rows next to each other - the thickest row with straight cobs'. The Pirin Mountains referred to in the top left-hand corner are a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria. Condition: very good. This poster design features huge juicy vegetables, grown as the result of newly-implemented irrigation systems. Socialist farming practices in Bulgaria were commonplace during its time as a Soviet ally or 'satellite'; the government was keen to encourage well-yielding farming practices and to be seen as a protector of agricultural infrastructure turing this turbulent period of the 20th century.     Laurence Dunn (1910-2006) was a well-known British marine artist and writer known for his depictions of ships. He grew up in Devon, where he practised drawing passing ships, and went on to study at the Central School of Art. He then worked for shipbuilding firm John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, where he contributed to the design of the Royal Yacht. During the Second World War, Dunn worked in naval intelligence. In the early 1960s, he created many line drawings of Atlantic ocean liners.

    Upon his death in 2006, the World Ship Society published the following obituary:

    DUNN, Laurence. [December 15 2006 — Lloyds List] Many readers will be saddened by the death of well-known marine artist and writer Laurence Dunn in his 97th year. A man of encyclopaedic knowledge, he began his lifelong love of ships in Brixham, where he meticulously recorded passing traffic with the exquisitely accurate line drawings which later became something of a trademark. While studying at London’s Central School of Art his work was noticed by the Southern Railway, which commissioned profiles of its fleet, and this in turn led to work for Orient Line, where he also designed the well-known corn-coloured hull, and later Thorneycroft, where he helped with shaping draft plans for a new royal yacht. During the second world was he worked for naval intelligence at the Admiralty, where his technique did much to improve recognition standards, and greatly expanded his shipping clientele, becoming personally known to many chairmen. As well as the shipping press he worked for mainstream publications such as Everybody’s, Sphere and the upmarket comic Eagle. Through his many contacts he enjoyed going to sea in a great variety of ships from aircraft carriers to colliers. Laurence wrote several books, starting with ship recognition titles which introduced new standards of layout, but his best known work was probably Passenger Liners, which was widely taken up by the travel trade. His love of Greece, where he was an early publicist of island cruising, let to involvement in reshaping various passenger liners beginning with Greek Line’s OLYMPIA. In later life he designed several sets of shipping stamps for the Crown Agents, produced photographic volumes on Thames and Mediterranean shipping and still found time to enjoy the passing Thames traffic. Our sympathies go to his wife Jennifer, who provided succour to the many ship lovers who beat a path to the welcoming door of their Gravesend home.

    Signed, dated and studio stamp verso.

    Christ Church was built in 1860 at the heart of the 13th century country village of Charnock Richard. Alongside its stained glass windows, the church boasts historic tile work and an exceptional  marble memorial to the original benefactor’s wife, Frances Darlington. This window was installed in 1990.

The couple lived in Oxford, where they both held teaching posts at the Oxford School of Art. Between 1948 and 1967 Miller frequently exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy in London, and also illustrated a number of books on gardening and natural history, such as 'The Living World' and 'Boff's Book of Gardening'.     St Giles's with a part of St John's College (1813)

    Engraving with later hand-colouring 25 x 32 cm An engraving of St Giles, including the famous St Giles Church, with the front of St John's to the right. Joseph Constantine Stadler was a prolific German émigré engraver of images after his contemporaries. Stadler's engravings are wide-ranging in subject matter and include landscapes, seascapes and portraits, as well as military, sporting and decorative subjects. Stadler was employed by the leading print publisher of the time, John Boydell. Stadler lived in Knightsbridge when he died at the age of 73. Michael Angelo Rooker ARA was an English oil and watercolour painter of architecture and landscapes, illustrator, and engraver. Condition: good. Some gentle age toning.
