Bawden's view of Westminster Abbey, cast in shades of blue, grey, and black.Edward Bawden was an English painter, illustrator and graphic artist, known for his prints, book covers, posters, and garden metalwork furniture. Bawden taught at the Royal College of Art, where he had been a student, worked as a commercial artist, and served as a war artist in World War II. He illustrated several books and painted various public murals, and his work and career are often associated with that of his contemporary, Eric Ravilious.Condition: generally very good. Lithograph 102 x 64 cm A copy of this poster is held by the London Transport Museum (1983/4/4178). Queen Elizabeth I, accompanied by two Yeomen Warders, surveys the white stone of the Tower of London. Johnson's design encourages us to use London Transport (now Transport for London) to visit the Tower in all its historic glory. Andrew Johnson was born in Portsmouth and studied at the Central School of Art and Design (now Central St Martin's) in London. He worked as a poster designer for several advertising agencies. He designed posters for BP, Shell, the London and North Eastern Railway, Southern Railway, The Times, and General Motors (to name but a few). He made advertising graphics in New York in the late 1920s and later founded Grainger Johnson (a poster design company) with Tom Grainger. He was a member of the British Society of Poster Designers and several of his designs are held by the London Transport Museum. Condition: backed to linen; excellent. Lithograph 102 x 64 cm Signed upper right in plate. Charles Paine's iconic 1921 poster encourages the use of the London Underground in order to view the Boat Race. The slick design features one boat’s stern disappearing from the frame and the other boat’s bow entering it (Cambridge won that year), alongside a strikingly Art Deco typeface. Charles Paine was a versatile and prolific designer, who drew on his training in stained glass to create bold, structured and highly stylised lithographs for a variety of companies. This decorative and brightly-coloured map illustrates the various county regiments of Great Britain, with a border of regimental badges. Kerry Lee produced war maps and military education images of aircraft during the Second World War. Valerie Thornton (1931 - 1991)

Etching and aquatint 33 x 20 cm Numbered 1/60 lower left, titled below, and signed and dated lower right, all in pencil. Here, Thornton muses on the dramatic differences in tone and texture between the water of the River Arno, the smooth paleness of the Ponte Vecchio, and the dark terracotta of the city's roofs. Her work is deeply concerned with material, and many of her etchings focus on eroded stone, emotive landscapes, and weathered architecture. Valerie Thornton was a British etcher and printmaker. She was born in London, but was evacuated to Canada with her two brothers during World War II. She returned to London in 1944 and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1949. From 1950 to 1953 Thornton studied under P.F. Millard at the Regent Street Polytechnic, then spent eight months at Atelier 17 in Paris. In the early 1960s, she moved to New York and worked at Pratt Graphic Art Center. In 1955, she succeeded Howard Hodgkin as assistant art teacher at Charterhouse School and in 1965 she became a founding member of the Print Makers Council. In 1970 she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. Thornton was a member of The Regent Street Group (a group of nine artists who studied together at the Regent Street Polytechnic in the early 1950s). The group also included Susan Horsfield, Renate Meyer, Michael Lewis, Ken Symonds, Philip Le Bas, and Peter Riches. Thornton's work is included in a number of major public collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the Tate. Thornton died in 1991 in Chelsworth, Suffolk. Pencil and watercolour 19 x 54 cm Provenance: the artist's studio sale. Jane Gray A.R.C.A. (b.1931) is a British stained glass artist. She studied stained glass at the Kingston School of Arts (1949 - 1951) and later at the Royal College of Art (1951 - 1955) under Lawrence Lee. Lee was so impressed with Gray’s work that he asked her to work alongside him on the design of ten nave windows for Coventry Cathedral. This six-year-long design project culminated in their final installation in 1962 after the cathedral’s consecration. Gray was the first woman to become a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and has designed more than a hundred windows in private and public buildings, chapels and over forty churches across the country, including St Peter’s, Martindale, Shrewsbury Abbey, St Oswald, Oswestry and St Mary, Chirk. Gray’s designs mark a crucial turning point in the history of stained glass art as the Victorian style gave way to a modern, aesthetic. In her work, Gray navigates this shift with a style that, whilst distinctly modern, retains a deep rooted sense of the medieval. Despite many of her commissions being for church windows, stained glass design was not simply about religious depiction for Gray, but more about ‘colour, shapes, luminosity, [and] playing with rainbows’. Julian Trevelyan (1910 - 1988)

Lithograph 38 x 53 cm Numbered 13/70 lower left and signed lower right, both in pencil. Nephew of the historian G M Trevelyan, Julian Trevelyan was educated at Bedales and then at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read English. After moving to Paris, Trevelyan studied engraving at Stanley William Hayter’s school, working alongside artists such as Max Ernst, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso. He married the potter Ursula Darwin in 1934, and in 1935 they moved to Hammersmith, buying Durham Wharf beside the River Thames which was Trevelyan’s studio – and home – for the rest of his life. His wartime service was – like so many artists – as a camoufleur. A Royal Engineer from 1940-43, he served in North Africa and Palestine, forcing the German Afrika Korps to use resources against a dummy army whilst real tanks were disguised as more harmless equipment. In the desert, nothing could be hidden - but it could be disguised. Following the dissolution of his marriage in 1950, he married the painter Mary Fedden. Teaching at Chelsea School of Art, Trevelyan eventually became head of the Etching Department and his pupils included David Hockney and Peter Ackroyd. Lithograph 45 x 60 cm Numbered 96/108 lower left and signed lower right, both in pencil. Printed by Piper and the screenprinter Chris Prater in 1987 after the original designs from 1942. 'Façade' was a sequence of poems written by the English poet Edith Sitwell. They were set to music by William Walton in 1922, four years after they were first written. 'Façade' premiered in 1923 in London, and was praised for its experimental modernist style. The choreographer Frederick Ashton made Façade into a ballet in 1931; Sitwell did not wish her poems to be included, but Walton's orchestral arrangements were used. John Piper was commissioned as set designer for a 1942 performance of Facade in 1942. This lithograph is the design for the performance's curtain; the poetry and music of the performance were played behind the curtain, unseen by the audience. The Gothic house to the right was inspired by Eaton Hall in Cheshire, and we also see a folly, lake, and wood typical of an English country house. The moon, butterfly, and dragonfly lend themselves to the scene's dreamlike aspects, and the mask in the centre of the design highlights the collaborative nature of Façade - a salute to poetry, music, art, and even architecture. John Piper CH was an English painter, printmaker, and designer of stained-glass windows. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics and ceramics. He then joined British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a steward, flying internationally. Injury due to a car accident during the 1960s meant that he joined the design department of Pergamon Press in Oxford at the age of 33. Six years later, he was appointed to the position of studio manager, in charge of art and design. In 1974, Messer left Pergamon Press to become a freelance graphic designer. He started painting more watercolours, becoming a full-time artist. During the 1980s, his ink drawings were regularly published in the Oxford Times. He has sometimes been called "The Oxford Artist" because of his large number of works depicting Oxford. He and his wife Dilys lived at first in Richmond upon Thames and then in Abingdon, just south of Oxford. Messer's work has been shown at the Mall Galleries for the annual exhibitions of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours annual exhibitions. Condition: very good. Hilary Hennes (née Hilary Miller) (1919 - 1993)

Two richly-coloured fruit bowl designs by Hennes in watercolour, surrounded by various other bowl designs sketched in pencil. Hilary Miller was born in London, where her father was a curator at the South London Art Gallery. She attended Blackheath High School and, from 1936 to 1940, studied at the Blackheath School of Art, and then for a further three years at the Royal College of Art. After graduating, she taught at the South East Sussex Technical College and in 1946 married the artist Hubert Hennes. The couple lived in Oxford, where they both held teaching posts at the Oxford School of Art. Between 1948 and 1967 Miller frequently exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy in London, and also illustrated a number of books on gardening and natural history, such as 'The Living World' and 'Boff's Book of Gardening'. John Cantiloe Joy and William Joy were brothers who worked together as English marine artists. During the 1820s, the brothers' paintings were exhibited at the Norwich Society of Artists, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Academy and at the British Institution. Polished redwood 96 cm high Provenance: the artist's estate. A significant work by the artist. This sensual mid-century modern nude conveys a sense of monumental abstraction through its sloping curvatures. It swells and recedes, demonstrating not only the sinuous possibilities of the human figure, but also those of the Hepworth- and Moore-influenced abstract form. John Murray McCheyne was a sculptor and teacher. He studied under the sculptor Alexander Carrick at the Edinburgh College of Art between 1930 and 1935. In the 1950s and 1960s he became Master of Sculpture at King’s College, University of Newcastle, and began to work on public sculpture commissions while there. He exhibited at the Palace of Arts' Empire Exhibition Scotland in 1938, and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Glasgow Institute. Piper's painting was reproduced as a lithograph in 1972, to be published in the "Oxford Almanack". The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanac published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to "dwindling interest"). The almanac traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanac artists have included James Basire, Michael Burghers, J. M. W. David Loggan (1634-1692)
Christ Church, Oxford (1675)
Engraving 42 x 84 cm Loggan's view of Christ Church from the 'Oxonia Illustrata'. Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' also includes an engraving of Winchester College (Winchester and New College share William of Wykeham as their founder) whilst the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder, Henry VIII, with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views from this era required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist; it was not until 1783 that it became possible for artists to ascend via hot air balloons and view the scenes they were depicting from above. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in Roman numerals in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in much smaller numbers. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK, 'Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne' (circa 1708). The contemporary artist Andrew Ingamells (born 1956) has produced a highly-acclaimed series of etchings which bring Loggan’s original vision up to date. Condition: very good; later hand coloured. Lithograph 31 x 44 cm Signed and numbered 358/500, both in pencil. Casson's depiction of Gonville and Caius, with sun slanting into the 16th-century Caius Court. Members of the college stroll through the court. Sir Hugh Casson was educated at Eastbourne College; St John’s College, Cambridge; and the Bartlett School of Architecture. Trained in the 1930s in the early modernist style, he taught at the Cambridge School of Architecture. After employment as a camoufleur during World War 2 by the Air Ministry, in 1948 he was appointed as director of architecture for the Festival of Britain. A close friend of the Royal Family, he undertook designs for the 1953 coronation, designed the interior of the Royal Yacht Britannia (“The overall idea was to give the impression of a country house at sea”), and taught the young Charles III to paint in watercolours. Amongst his architectural achievements are the Elephant House at London Zoo, the 1978 redevelopment of Bristol Docks, the Raised Faculty Building for The University of Cambridge, and a building for the Royal College of Art. He published a number of illustrated books, of which Casson’s Oxford and Casson’s Cambridge are probably the best known. A limited edition series of prints was produced from the paintings. Engraving with later hand-colouring 43 x 52 cm A decorative map of Northumberland by the celebrated Dutch mapmaker and artist Joan Blaeu, (son of the cartographer Willem Blaeu). Crests of the local gentry appear in the top right hand corner. Blaeu moved to Amsterdam in 1920 to join the family firm of mapmakers. In 1635, the business published the Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus in two volumes - the largest and most expensive book published in the seventeenth century, and the venture for which the Blaeu were most famed. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638; Joan became the official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company, as his father had been before him. Original vintage poster 61 x 40 cm An original poster depicting the Château du Clos de Vougeot vineyard in Burgundy during the grape harvest. Men and women pick the grapes outside the Château. Standing in the very heart of Burgundy's vineyards, Clos de Vougeot was originally a wine farm, built in the 12th century by monks from the nearby Abbey of Cîteaux. In the 16th century, a Renaissance style château was added to the existing buildings. Jeux de la Passion Oberammergau (1960)

This magnificent poster advertises the Passion Play (an outdoor play telling the Easter story) held every ten years in Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps. Tradition tells that the town was struck with plague in 1633; the townsfolk vowed that they would perform a Passion Play every ten years as a symbol of thanks to God if the plague would end, which it did. At the turn of the twentieth century, improved railways across Europe meant that people from outside the Alps could travel to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Original vintage poster 100 x 63 cm Printed in Madrid for the Publications de la Direccion General del Turismo. Ortega's poster for the Spanish tourist board promotes the Romanesque art of Spain. This edition of the poster was produced for circulation in Germany. José García Ortega was born in Arroba de los Montes and was a member of the Communist Party. He worked as a painter and sculptor, studying at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 1953 he went to France to study art, funded by a French government scholarship. He returned to Spain throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and became a commercially successful artist. This posters makes use of Myerscough Walker's original painting of a church bombed in the Blitz, with new buildings being constructed behind. Even in the face of war and destruction, Britain builds itself up to prosper - and, by saving, so can we. Myerscough Walker was an architectural draughtsman. He trained at Leeds School of Art and went on to the Architectural Association in London. In 1931 he won the Tite prize and was celebrated in his career for his skill as a draughtsman – as well as architect, writer, artist, sculptor and stage designer. Original vintage poster 76 x 49 cm Hans Schleger was born in Germany. After the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule. After working in Berlin, he moved to New York in 1924 and began to work as a graphic designer. He returned to Berlin in 1929 and began working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer, who introduced him to Jack Beddington (the head of advertising at Shell Mex BP). He moved to London following the rise of Hitler and produced a series of posters for Shell Mex. During the Second World War he worked for the British Government. He later taught at the Chicago Institute of Design and subsequently designed the trademarks of the John Lewis Partnership, Penguin, Deutsche Bank, and the Edinburgh Festival. World War II interrupted his career and he joined the Royal Artillery (of the British Army), teaching painting and drawing in the Education Corps - whilst simultaneously teaching at St Martin's School of Art, part time. Following the war, Collins studied at the Royal College of Art, winning a scholarship. He then worked as a commercial artist, producing some well-known posters for clients including British Railways and British European Airways. He was the Art Director at Odhams Press and spent time designing for both ICI and Shell. With his wife Georgette, he created the 'Bacombe Galleries' in Sussex, converting a group of buildings into a gallery space. In 1975 they developed the Stanley Studios in Chelsea, which were scheduled for redevelopment, into a combined artists' studio and residence. Moving into the Stanley Studios allowed the Collinses to immerse themselves in Chelsea's art scene, and they proceeded to fill the studios with art, antiques, sculpture, and other curios. Honourable Artillery Company: Armed Strength For Peace
Original vintage poster 75 x 51 cm ""ARMED STRENGTH FOR PEACE": Apply to The Regimental Adjutant, Armoury House, E.C.I." Anna Zinkeisen won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools in 1916, focusing on sculpture and exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1919. She was awarded the Landseer Award in 1920 and 1921, and went on to become an esteemed portrait artist, often of society ladies. She produced a series of posters for London Transport in the inter-war period. During the Second World War, Zinkeisen became a nurse, and was profoundly affected by the suffering she saw during her time working in St Mary’s Hospital. This is arguably the point at which she and her sister Doris reached the pinnacle of their careers, producing some of the finest and most affecting depictions of the world at war made during this period. In the 1950s he came into money and ran away to St Ives to become a professional artist, studying under John Tunnard and associating with other artists like Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Black rarely put up work for sale during his lifetime and is known for his architectural and deconstructivist sculptures which espoused the modernist spirit of the St Ives group in the 1960s. William Sidney Causer was a landscape artist known coastal and his urban scenes. Oil on canvas 122 x 85 cm Provenance: the artist's studio. A momentous depiction of Lecce Cathedral in all its glory. This oil painting is a fantastic example of Beer's focus on architecture, the central and recurring theme of his pictorial idiom. Born in London in 1928, just too late to serve in the Second World War, Richard Beer studied between 1945 - 1950 at the Slade School. Subsequently, a French Government scholarship allowed him to spend time in Paris at Atelier 17, working under Stanley William Hayter (1901 - 1988), one of the most significant print makers of the 20th Century – having spent the War in New York, advising as a camofleur, Hayter only returned to Paris in 1950. Subsequently Beer studied at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris. Working for John Cranko, choreographer for the Royal Ballet, Beer designed the sets and costumes for his The Lady and the Fool at Covent Garden, subsequently working for him following his move in 1961 to Stuttgart Ballet. Additionally he produced book illustrations and designed book jackets. Beer later taught print-making at the Chelsea School of Art, where he was a popular teacher. Probably his greatest work was a collaboration with John Betjeman to produce a portfolio of prints of ten Wren Churches in the City for Editions Alecto, copies of which are in The Government Art Collection. That collection contains a total of 54 prints by Beer, and the Tate Gallery’s collection holds seven. His Oxford series was also produced for Editions Alecto as was a series of predominantly architectural views in Southern Europe. Most of his prints are of architectural subjects. Ilford War Memorial design
Pencil on paper 15 x 10 cm Initialled lower right in pencil. Hallward's design is for Ilford's memorial for the fallen of the First World War. Ilford had raised £20,000 for a commemorative project and opted to build a garden and a monument (there had been discussions about opening a children's hospital, but it was decided that upkeep of the hospital over time could not be guaranteed; a wing at the local hospital, combined with the memorial and garden, was deemed to be the better option). This drawing is a proposed sketch; the final monument – whilst retaining the celtic cross – is simpler, but also incorporates a fine monument of a soldier presenting arms by the sculptor Newberry Abbott Trent (best known for the reliefs on 3 St James’s Square, London, depicting London street scenes; and those on the entrance doors to The Adelphi Building on The Strand, depicting) industrial scenes. Original vintage poster 77 x 50 cm Signed lower left in the plate. Issued by the Tilling Group of Omnibus Companies. Jones' poster, with its two happy swans in the foreground, encourages us to travel Britain via coach (the coach tour was becoming ever more popular in 1950s Britain). The text reads: "You can travel anywhere in Britain by coach and bus ... ask for details of express coach services and touring holidays at any travel agent or Victoria Coach Station S.W.1." Barbara Jones was an English artist and writer. She studied at Croydon High School and then the Royal College of Art (where her contemporaries included John Piper, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and Edward Ardizzone), beginning in the Department of Engraving but transferring to the Department of Mural Decoration in her second year. She illustrated the pamphlet 'Bombed Churches as War Memorials' in 1945. Jones worked on several notable murals after the war, including for the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946, and the Enterprise Scotland exhibition in 1947. Original vintage poster 101 x 63 cm Signed and dated in plate. Issued by the Underground Electric Railways Co. of London, Ltd., 1925. This is one of a series of posters designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer bearing the legend 'Summertime - Pleasures by Underground'. A doleful Pierrot figure (a lovestruck clown character from commedia dell'arte) plays a lute before a castle with streaming pennants; a country caravan, daffodils, leafy trees and a bright yellow sun complete the scene. Other posters from the series include similar traditional folk characters, such as a Jack-in-the-green. Edward McKnight Kauffer was an American artist and graphic designer who lived for much of his life in the United Kingdom. He is mainly known for his work in poster design, but was also active as a painter, book illustrator and theatre designer. He studied art at the California School of Design from 1910 to 1912 and then at the Académie Moderne in Paris until 1914 (via a six month stint at the Art Institute of Chicago). He moved to London upon the start of the First World War and produced 140 poster for London Underground and London Transport. He created posters for Shell Oil, the Great Western Railway and other commercial clients, and also illustrated books and book covers. Later he also became interested in textiles, interior design, and theatrical design. He returned to New York City in 1940 and began designing posters for American Airlines (his primary client until his death) in 1947 .In 1952 he designed the book jacket for Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man - arguably Kauffer's most famous work. Watercolour and collage 30 x 47 cm Signed lower right Edward [Maufe]. Provenance the estate of Bernard Bumpus, together with several other Maufe drawings. Drawing for D Beatty Pownall Architect. A design for an Art Deco house by the coast, complete with seagulls and boats. Maufe is probably most famous for his Guildford Cathedral, the Air Forces Memorial, and his work for the Imperial War Graves Commission, for which he received his knighthood in 1954. He served a five-year apprenticeship under William Pite and then attended St John’s College, Oxford as an undergraduate. He then studied Design at the Architectural Association. His architecture is notable for its strong Arts and Crafts influence; this likely arose from his having lived in The Red House, Bexleyheath, which Philip Webb designed for the most famous of the Arts and Crafts designers: William Morris. Gouache 21 x 13 cm A gouache painting of Abram Games' fantastic Art Deco Modern design for the logo advertising the Festival of Britain. Games' design, called the Festival Star, includes a modernist Britannia in profile with bunting below, all set on the four points of the compass and in the Union Jack colours of red, white, and blue. Games was one of twelve artists invited to submit designs to the Arts Council and the Council of Industrial Design in 1948. The Festival of Britain was a national exhibition and fair that reached millions of visitors throughout the United Kingdom in the summer of 1951. It was devised as a celebration of a hundred years since the Great Exhibition of 1851, but focused entirely on Britain and its achievements rather than adopting the international outlook of the Great Exhibition. The Festival's purpose was to highlight and celebrate how far Britain had come in the wake of the Second World War's devastation. Abram Games OBE RDI was a celebrated British graphic artist. His parents were Eastern European Jews and changed their family name from Gamse to Games after moving to Britain. Games studied at Saint Martin's School of Art in London but left after two terms; aged 21, he won a poster competition for the London County Council and then began to work as a freelance poster designer. In 1937 the journal Art and Industry featured him in an article and this resulted inseveral high-profile graphic design commissions from the General Post Office, London Transport, Royal Dutch Shell, and more. He also designed stamps for the Israeli Post Office, covers for The Jewish Chronicle and synagogue prayer book prints, and designed several posters promoting Jewish organisations and initiatives. Engraving with later hand colouring 39 x 53 cm A beautifully coloured map of Cambridgeshire, with an antique description of the county to the reverse. The map, along with many others, was published in Speed's atlas, 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine', first published in 1611. The map is populated by four figures in academic dress, and bordered on all sides by college crests. John Speed was an English cartographer, chronologer and historian. The son of a citizen and Merchant Taylor in London, he rose from his family occupation to accept the task of drawing together and revising the histories, topographies and maps of the Kingdoms of Great Britain as an exposition of the union of their monarchies in the person of King James I and VI. He accomplished this with remarkable success, with the support and assistance of the leading antiquarian scholars of his generation. He drew upon and improved the shire maps of Christopher Saxton, John Norden and others, being the first to incorporate the hundred-boundaries into them, and he was the surveyor and originator of many of the town or city plans inset within them. His work helped to define early modern concepts of British national identity. His Biblical genealogies were also formally associated with the first edition of the King James Bible. Lithograph 28 x 38 cm Signed, titled and dated in plate, and numbered 249/500 and signed lower right in pencil. Casson's view of University College's Fellows' Garden. Members of the College sit or stroll, books in hand. Sir Hugh Casson was educated at Eastbourne College; St John’s College, Cambridge; and the Bartlett School of Architecture. Trained in the 1930s in the early modernist style, he taught at the Cambridge School of Architecture. After employment as a camoufleur during World War 2 by the Air Ministry, in 1948 he was appointed as director of architecture for the Festival of Britain. A close friend of the Royal Family, he undertook designs for the 1953 coronation, designed the interior of the Royal Yacht Britannia (“The overall idea was to give the impression of a country house at sea”), and taught the young Charles III to paint in watercolours. Amongst his architectural achievements are the Elephant House at London Zoo, the 1978 redevelopment of Bristol Docks, the Raised Faculty Building for The University of Cambridge, and a building for the Royal College of Art. He published a number of illustrated books, of which Casson’s Oxford and Casson’s Cambridge are probably the best known. A limited edition series of prints was produced from the paintings. Sir Hugh Casson was educated at Eastbourne College; St John’s College, Cambridge; and the Bartlett School of Architecture. Trained in the 1930s in the early modernist style, he taught at the Cambridge School of Architecture. After employment as a camoufleur during World War 2 by the Air Ministry, in 1948 he was appointed as director of architecture for the Festival of Britain. A close friend of the Royal Family, he undertook designs for the 1953 coronation, designed the interior of the Royal Yacht Britannia (“The overall idea was to give the impression of a country house at sea”), and taught the young Charles III to paint in watercolours. Amongst his architectural achievements are the Elephant House at London Zoo, the 1978 redevelopment of Bristol Docks, the Raised Faculty Building for The University of Cambridge, and a building for the Royal College of Art. He published a number of illustrated books, of which Casson’s Oxford and Casson’s Cambridge are probably the best known. A limited edition series of prints was produced from the paintings.
