William Nicholson (1872 - 1949)
Front Quad, Wadham College, Oxford
Lithograph 26 x 34.5 cm Signed. Published by Stafford Gallery. Sir William Nicholson was a British painter and printmaker. He is also known as an illustrator, author of children’s books, stained glass designer, and theatre set designer. In 1902, he produced a series of watercolour, chalk, and pen drawings of Oxford which were published in 1905 by the Stafford Gallery as two portfolios of lithographs, with descriptions by Arthur Waugh (father of Evelyn Waugh). These dramatic depictions of Oxford show Nicholson’s interest in the effects of light and shade on the city’s architecture. Condition: generally very good. In conservation mount.
