    Away by Green Line (1936)

Original vintage poster 103 x 63 cm A copy of this poster is held by the London Transport Museum (1983/4/4500). A poster produced for London Transport illustrating the pleasurable destinations to be reached via Green Line Coaches. Sutherland's design depicts a pitchfork and a maize dolly - two promises of country life which the city-dweller might now easily access, thanks to the advent of British coach travel. Graham Sutherland OM was an English artist known for his romantic, abstract landscapes and portraits of public figures, including Churchill and the Queen Mother. Sutherland spent the 1920s mostly making landscape prints, but, following the collapse of the print market in the early 1930s branched out into watercolours. He also undertook a few commercial commissions for posters, working for London Transport, Shell and others. He served as an official war artist in the Second World War, painting industrial scenes on the British home front. After the war he worked in oils and explored figurative painting. • Margaret Souttar (1914 - 1987)

    Trinity Hall, Cambridge II

Acrylic paint 56 x 65 cm cm Souttar was a Scottish painter and printmaker known for her town- and cityscapes. In the early 1960s, she was commissioned to produce a series of prints of the Cambridge colleges. She captures the modernity and optimism of 1960s Cambridge; the fact that a female artist was commissioned to create the prints reflects the changing attitudes of the University towards women. Trinity Hall was one of the first Cambridge colleges to admit women as students – it did not do so until 1976.6. Provenance: the artist's studio sale. Condition: generally very good, some crinkling as a result of using water-based paints on thin paper. If you are interested, please email info@manningfineart.co.uk or call us on 07929 749056. Snaffles was one of the foremost sporting artists of his era, publishing many popular prints such as these: hunting pictures, racing scenes, and military subjects. • William Black Design for Sculpture (1966)

Watercolour 18 x 16 cm Signed and dated lower right. A design for a metal sculpture, on a blue- and grey-toned background. William Black was a St Ives artist who began his career as an architect. In the 1950s he came into money and ran away to St Ives to become a professional artist, studying under John Tunnard and associating with other artists like Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Black rarely put up work for sale during his lifetime and is known for his architectural and deconstructivist sculptures which espoused the modernist spirit of the St Ives group in the 1960s. • David Loggan (1634 - 1692)

    Corpus Christi College, Oxford (1675)

Engraving 30 x 41 cm Loggan's view of Corpus from the 'Oxonia Illustrata', with later hand colouring. Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' also includes an engraving of Winchester College (Winchester and New College share William of Wykeham as their founder) whilst the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder, Henry VIII, with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views from this era required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist; it was not until 1783 that it became possible for artists to ascend via hot air balloons and view the scenes they were depicting from above. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in Roman numerals in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in much smaller numbers. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK, 'Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne' (circa 1708). The contemporary artist Andrew Ingamells (born 1956) has produced a highly-acclaimed series of etchings which bring Loggan’s original vision up to date. Condition: generally very good; a little discolouration to paper. Later hand colouring. If you are interested, please email info@manningfineart.co.uk or call us on 07929 749056. • Andrew Ingamells (1956 - )

    Brasenose College, Oxford

Etching 41 x 61 cm Numbered 76/175 lower left and signed lower right, both in pencil. Inspired by David Loggan’s 17th-century engraving of Brasenose, this view is part of Ingamells’ series of views of Oxford and Cambridge. It has long-since sold out from the publisher. Ingamells trained at St Albans School of Art and the London College of Printing, subsequently working as a graphic designer and illustrator. Based in London, he began making drawings of the buildings and landscapes of London. Ingamells’ work is in many public collections including those of the Tate Gallery, The National Trust, The Paul Mellon Centre for British Art, and the City of London Guildhall Library. His pictures are also in several private collections, including those of various Oxford and Cambridge colleges, HRH King Charles III, and Shell Oil. The artist is currently part-way through his epic project to record all the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, a project undertaken in homage to David Loggan. Condition: very good; small soft crease to top right corner which is essentially not noticeable. If you are interested, please email info@manningfineart.co.uk or call us on 07929 749056. • Juan Reus (1912-2003) Original Vintage Bullfighting Poster April 1955 107cm x 53cm Juan Reus was born in 1912 in Valencia, where he became a well-known painter, draftsman and, notably, graphic designer of bullfighting posters. Orphaned at birth, Reus attended school until the age of seven, at which point he began work as an apprentice at a local hardware store, where he met the painter Constantino Gómez, piquing his artistic interests. He later went to work in a decorative fans shop and held his first exhibition in the bazaars of Prats and Collado in Valencia. In the 1940s, he was hired as a graphic designer of bullfighting posters in the lithographic Ortega workshop. These posters are generally characterised by bright colours and fluid, gestural movements, whereby the swish of the matador's cloak is almost palpable. This 1955 edition advertises a bullfighting event in Malaga, featuring Rafael Ortega, Miguel Baez Litri and Cesar Giron.
  • Ronald Fielding Dodd (1890-1958)

St Edmund Hall - 1930 Proposed Extensions to Chapel and Library

Reproduction with hand colouring 54 x 40 cm Ronald Fielding Dodd ARIBA was a Scottish architect and Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. After serving as a Second Lieutenant in the British Army’s Machine Gun Corps during the First World War, Dodd was most active as an architect in the 1930s. Over the course of the decade, he contributed designs for St Peter’s College, Oxford; St Edmund Hall, Oxford; Stowe School; the Acland Hospital in North Oxford, where he added a Neo-Georgian frontage; and the 16th-century Chippinghurst Manor in Oxfordshire. To mark his architectural achievements, there is now a Fielding Dodd Prize for “Outstanding Work” involving architecture at Oxford Brookes University. These particular plans date from 1930 and depict the proposed extensions to the Chapel and the Library. Condition: Generally very good, thin paper with some wear. • Original vintage poster Calling Out of the Whole Army Reserve

Letterpress poster 1939 51 x 48 cm A Royal call to arms... 'His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to direct by proclamation that the army reserve and the militia (which includes the supplementary reserve) be called out on permanent service.' This poster was originally designed in 1921 following the Treaty Talks between Ireland, seeking independence, and the United Kingdom, led by Winston Churchill. Relations at this time were fraught and it is thought that this poster was shown to delegates as part of the pressure exerted on them to accept Britain's offer of partial independence. Churchill had previously threatened to swamp Ireland with troops and hold a bloody war against the Republicans and this poster was produced to show he was serious. This particular edition was reprinted from the 1921 original in 1939 in preparation for the beginning of the Second World War.
  • A E Lemmon St Barnabus

Cartoon for stained glass window 111 x 33 cm Albert Edward Lemmon (1889-1963) was a British artist and craftsman renowned for his contributions to stained glass and ecclesiastical art in the Midlands. Between 1903 and 1909, Lemmon trained at the Birmingham School of Art, before becoming an assistant to A. J. Davies in 1911 in the stained glass studio at the Bromsgrove Guild, a prominent collective of artists and designers. In 1927, Lemmon established his own studio, where he would go on to design over sixty stained glass windows, countless 'leaded lights' and a wide variety of ecclesiastical and decorative items until his death in 1963. Further details about the life and work of A E Lemmon are available in 'A E Lemmon (1889-1963), Artist and Craftsman' by Roy Albutt. As part of the stained glass making process, artists produce a full-sized drawing of their window design, showing the exact size and shape of all the pieces of glass, their colour and the sizes of the lead. This depiction of St Barnabus was produced for a stained glass window to be hung in Birmingham Children's Hospital. The window itself was later destroyed in the Second World War, leaving this cartoon as a unique, one-of-a-kind historical vestige. Condition: Generally very good, has some marks where commensurate with the production processes of stained glass, small loss approx 1cm x 1cm below the S of Barnabus.

  • George Bissill (1896-1973) Church view from the railway

Watercolour 28 x 40 cm Signed to lower right Born in 1896, George Bissill was a British miner, painter and furniture designer. Raised in the mining village of Langley Mill, Derbyshire, Bissill became a miner at the age of 13, before leaving to join the war effort in 1915. Upon his return from the war after being gassed, Bissill chose to become a pavement artist outside the newly erected Bush House in Aldwych, painting from his memory and his sketch book the uncompromising underground world he had inhabited. In 1935 he moved to the countryside near Newbury, where he lived and worked as a landscape painter, art restorer and dealer until his death in 1973. This watercolour forms part of a larger collection, 'unseen since they were taken from George Bissil's studio in 1983' and restored by Kate Pattinson. A series of planned exhibitions were cancelled due to Covid, but two shows, one in Oxford and one in Ilkeston, did take place. Through such exhibitions, Pattinson hoped to 'restore the reputation of an artist who, through mighty endeavour, conquered the art world in the 1920s with his powerful, authentic and experimental pictures.' Bissill's paintings are also held in a number of important public collections, including the Tate Gallery, National Museum of Ireland and the Manchester Art Gallery. This watercolour depicts a view of a church from a distance. In the foreground, a railway tunnel peaks out of a gently rolling hill and wooden fences snake across the small fields adjacent to the railway. In the background, the church--which bears a striking resemblance to the medieval Cathedral in Norwich--stands out in the skyline of red roofs. The earthen colours of this composition have a distinctly calming effect, capturing a quiet moment of 20th century life. Condition: generally very good.

  • E. T. Talbot Erasmus' Tower, Queens' College Cambridge

Watercolour 35 x 21 cm Signed, dated and inscribed to the reverse. A richly-coloured watercolour painting of Erasmus' Tower, Queens' College Cambridge. Part of the Old Court of Queens' College, dating back to the 16th century, Erasmus' tower was named after the humanist and scholar Desiderius Erasmus, who lived in the college in the early 16th century. It remains a symbol of the college’s rich academic history and its connections to the Renaissance scholar. Talbot expertly captures the charm of this medieval tower, using careful brushstrokes to depict the voluminous greenery. Condition: Generally very good, mounted to board.

  • 'Samivel' Paul Gayet-Tancrède (1907 - 1992) L'alliance de l'homme et de la montagne

Original vintage poster 100 x 62 cm A man sits atop a grassy hill, taking in the nature around him and looking down into the valley below. He is surrounded by the white peaks of the French alps in the Parc national de la Vanoise. Nearby a sparrow has settled on a small boulder amongst the mountain flowers. The scene is bucolic and calls to mind traditional depictions of mountain life in the likes of Heidi. Samivel was a writer, an artist, a photographer, an explorer, and more. In 1948 he accompanied Paul Émile Victor on the first French Greenland expedition, making three documentary films in the process. His friends included Théodore Monod and Gilbert André - the latter the mayor of Bonneval-sur-Arc and one of the founders of the Vanoise National Park - and with them and others he spent his whole life aiming for the protection of the imperilled countryside. The graphic artist side of him had a life-long fascination with high mountains, and his illustrated books and series of posters of the French Alps have long been popular.

  • Violet Hilda Drummond (British, 1911-2000)

    St Paul's Cathedral

Watercolour 33 x 43 cm Signed upper right (visible in the photograph showing the framed painting). Provenance: the Arthur Andersen art collection. Here, the artist paints a sprightly view of St Paul's, which rises from a sea of nondescript traffic and pedestrians. The mostly monochrome palette, gently highlighted with a yellow wash and white details, communicates the character of the city. Drummond's father, a Scots Guard, was killed at Ypres in 1914. Drummond and her two sisters were brought up by her mother and educated in Eastbourne and at Le Chateau Vitry-sur-Seine, a Parisian finishing school. After Paris, Drummond attended St Martin’s School of Art. Later in life, she began writing children’s picture books – the most notable being Miss Anna Truly (1945) and her Little Laura series (1960 onwards). She also produced cartoons for the BBC. 'Mrs Easter and the Stork' – published in 1957 by Faber & Faber – was awarded the Kate Greenway Medal. Drummond later took to painting watercolours of London street scenes which have remained popular ever since.

  • Samuel Howitt (1765-1822) after Thomas Williamson (1758-1817)

Exhibition of a Battle between a Buffalo & a Tiger' from Oriental Field Sports (1819)

Hand-coloured aquatint 35 x 47 cm Captain Thomas Williamson served in a British regiment in Bengal, India. He was known as a keen sportsman and, after returning to England, his notable interest in contemporary Indian sports attracted the attention of the publisher Edward Orme. Orme was a British engraver, painter and publisher of illustrated books, and in 1805 he commissioned Williamson to produce a work focused on Oriental sports and animals. The book took two years to complete, with the painter Samuel Howitt commissioned to produce watercolours based on original sketches by Williamson, most of which he had created while in India. The book in which the aquatint plates after Howitt were published was called Oriental Field Sports, which describes itself as 'being a complete, detailed, and accurate description of the wild sports of the East and exhibiting, in a novel and interesting manner, the natural history of the elephant, the rhinoceros, the tiger, and other undomesticated animals'.

  • Keith Vaughan Gentleman in Black-Tie

Ballpoint pen sketch 17 x 13 cm Born in 1912, Keith Vaughan was a British painter known for his modernist and semi-abstract depictions of the male figure. He was self-taught as an artist but during his time as a conscientious objector in the Second World War, he befriended the painters Graham Sutherland and John Minton. Through these contacts, he formed part of the neo-romantic circle of the immediate post-war period. Over time, Vaughan's idiosyncratic style evolved away from the group as he focussed on male nudes and groups, often rendered in a geometric yet lyrical manner. Vaughan was openly gay at a time when homosexuality was criminalised in Britain. As a result, his work often reflected themes of isolation and desire, capturing both the physical and emotional aspects of human existence. He continues to be celebrated today and his works are held in several major galleries, inlcuding the National Galleries of Scotland, the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum. This sketch of a gentleman in black-tie was taken from Vaughan's 'Ischia Cheese & Grill' sketchbook. Together the drawings record Vaughan's experimentalism with landscape, abstraction and notably his commitment to the human form. This sketchbook was sold as part of Peter Adam's estate; Adam was not just a close friend of Vaughan but his executor, biographer and the curator of multiple exhibitions of his work after he died in 1977. This sketch represents the unique opportunity to own a small piece of Keith Vaughan's oeuvre as he continues to grow in popularity.

This sketch was taken from Vaughan's 'Ischia Cheese & Grill' sketchbook. It depicts a number of male nudes, each drawn with a sculptural quality, seemingly modelled from busts in an art gallery; interestingly it also seems to be a reiteration of another of his sketches of male nudes, drawn from a more distanced perspective, allowing the viewer to better take in the surrounding busts and sculptures. Together the drawings in the sketchbook record Vaughan's experimentalism with landscape, abstraction and notably his commitment to the human form. This collection was sold as part of Peter Adam's estate; Adam was not just a close friend of Vaughan but his executor, biographer and the curator of multiple exhibitions of his work after he died in 1977. This sketch represents the unique opportunity to own a small piece of Keith Vaughan's oeuvre as he continues to grow in popularity. Condition: generally very good.

  • Louis Osman (1914 - 1996)

    Proposal for Roborough Village, Devon

One pencil on tracing paper, other two reproductions with hand colouring 50 x 88 cm Provenance: artist's studio sale Louis Osman (30 January 1914 – 11 April 1996) was an architect, artist, goldsmith, silversmith and medallist. Few people matched his creations as a goldsmith, and consequently he was chosen to make the crown for the Investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1968. Many of his other works are in public collections in the UK and worldwide. After Hele’s school in Exeter he studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture – part of University College London – from 1931. Also attending the Slade, he left the Bartlett being awarded the top first, which brings with it the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA. Following the war he was busy as an architect, works including for Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeterm, Ely and Lichfield Cathedrals. Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his own folly, the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire – which was given to the National Trust in 1981 when Osman was not able to keep the tenancy any longer. These architectural sketches show Osman's ambitious plans for Roborough Village in Devon, dating from 1965. Cited as 'a huge, visionary scheme for Lord Roborough's model village striding across Dartmoor', in Osman's obituary, this series of drawings highlights different facets of Osman's vision. The first, with its neat colours, focusses on the placement of businesses and estate offices, while the third focusses on the geographical contours of the landscape and the logistics of his idea. Condition: Generally very good; the odd handling marks etc. and a tiny tear to pencil drawing approx 3mm long If you are interested, please email info@manningfineart.co.uk or call us on 07929 749056. • Kerry Lee (1903 - 1988) Oxford

Original vintage map 46 x 60 cm Published by Pictorial Maps Limited, Kerry Lee's own company c.1965 This edition of the map was produced around 1965. It illustrates a number of famous Oxford landmarks, including the Radcliffe Camera, Christ Church College's Tom Tower and all of the colleges of Oxford University. Lee also frames this map with the crest of each college and an illustration of all the college founders. Well known as a creator of pictorial maps of British cities from the mid 20th century, Kerry Lee generally draws a self-portrait in the bottom corner by his signature - as here, where he is seen painting (mustachioed and bearded, and clad in a brown tunic) with his ever-faithful dog Jim. Educated at Reading Schools of Arts and Science, the Slade and the Sorbonne in Paris, he subsequently assisted his step-father, an architect named Mr Harvey, as draftsman. Following the Depression Lee set up 'Associated Artists' at Blandford Studios off Baker Street, with a group of other commercial artists. During World War II he was based in Hertfordshire creating detailed cut-away drawings of German aircraft, and after the war - still at Blandford Studios - published a series of pictorial maps, both those for British Rail and also his own publications. Condition generally very good.

  • In the manner of A. E. Halliwell (1905-1987) RA Exhibition

Gouache c.1930 26 x 30 cm Provenance: Family of A. E. Halliwell. A.E. Halliwell (1905–1986) was a British artist, illustrator, and designer best known for his vibrant poster designs created for British railway companies during the mid-20th century. Born in Southport, Halliwell developed a strong foundation in art and design early in life. He studied at the Southport School of Art from 1923 to 1926 before graduating to the Royal College of Art in London and subsequently practising as a professional designer from the 1930s. Following his studies, Halliwell married Doris Doyle in Strood Kent, and  went on to have a significant teaching career himself, most notably as a lecturer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (later part of Central Saint Martins), where he influenced a new generation of designers and illustrators. Halliwell is perhaps best remembered for his vibrant and engaging poster designs created for British railway companies during the 1930s. His work was characterised by a bright, graphic style that balanced charm with clarity, often depicting idealised scenes of British holiday destinations—from sunny seaside towns to tranquil countryside vistas. Beyond posters, his artistic output included book illustration, commercial design, and stage costume sketches, showcasing his versatility across mediums. His posters continue to remain enduring symbols of a golden age of British travel and design and are displayed in major collections including the London Transport Museum and the V & A. This vibrant work features a design for an Underground poster, centring around a theoretical exhibition at the Royal Academy. It showcases an excellent command of stylised typeface, painting the RA in a gilt frame. An abstracted human form watches over the painting, surrounded by a colourful purple swirl, mimicking the gesture of the paintbrush across the paper. As a finishing touch, the iconic Underground roundel is painted into the bottom right hand corner. Condition: Generally very good, a little very faint spotting and slight discolouration and pin holes to the top corners (would be covered by mount).

  • Carlos Ruano Llopis (1878-1950) Original Vintage Bullfighting Poster July 1941 107cm x 53cm Carlos Ruano Llopis was born in 1878 in Orba, Spain where he would become a celebrated painter and bullfighting poster artist. He began his career in a fan-making workshop to support his family. In 1909, he won the gold medal at the Regional Exhibition, allowing him to enjoy a scholarship to further his studies in Italy. From here onwards, he began to develop his characteristic bullfighting motif. This obsession with bulls was perhaps borne out of his own desire to pursue glory as a matador, an ambition he only curbed in deference to his beloved mother. The vivacity of his bullfighting posters became his trademark and, on one occasion, the prodigious matador Joselito “Gallo” even proclaimed, ‘the artist who painted this knows how to bullfight, even if he has never fought bulls before.’ Bright colours, movement and a sense of passion bring these posters to life, offering a uniquely Spanish charm. This 1941 edition advertises a bullfighting event in Valencia, featuring Marcial Lalanda, Manuel Rodriguez Manolete - often considered one of the greatest bullfighters of all time -, and Manolo Martín Vazquez.
