José Ortega (1921 - 1990)
Romanische Kunst Spanien (1960s)
Original vintage poster 100 x 63 cm Printed in Madrid for the Publications de la Direccion General del Turismo. Ortega's poster for the Spanish tourist board promotes the Romanesque art of Spain. This edition of the poster was produced for circulation in Germany. José García Ortega was born in Arroba de los Montes and was a member of the Communist Party. He worked as a painter and sculptor, studying at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 1953 he went to France to study art, funded by a French government scholarship. He returned to Spain throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and became a commercially successful artist. Some of his most famous designs include the posters which the Spanish tourist board commissioned from him circa 1960. Condition: generally very good; a few tiny repaired edge tears. Not backed. Reproduction, plus hand colouring 58 x 78 cm Provenance: artist's studio sale Louis Osman (30 January 1914 – 11 April 1996) was an architect, artist, goldsmith, silversmith and medallist. Few people matched his creations as a goldsmith, and consequently he was chosen to make the crown for the Investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1968. Many of his other works are in public collections in the UK and worldwide. After Hele’s school in Exeter he studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture – part of University College London – from 1931. Also attending the Slade, he left the Bartlett being awarded the top first, which brings with it the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA. Following the war he was busy as an architect, works including for Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeterm, Ely and Lichfield Cathedrals. Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his own folly, the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire – which was given to the National Trust in 1981 when Osman was not able to keep the tenancy any longer. Samuel Alken Coursing Scene Lithograph with hand colouring 25 x 42 cm Samuel Alken Jr. (1784–1825) was a British artist and engraver, part of the prominent Alken family of painters and engravers, known for their sporting and hunting scenes. He was the son of Samuel Alken Sr. and contributed significantly to the family's artistic legacy. Like his father, Alken Jr. worked primarily in engraving and painting, specialising in aquatint and other printmaking techniques. Inkeeping with family tradition, Alken Jr. often depicted sporting subjects such as horse racing, hunting, and other outdoor pursuits in his engravings and paintings. As such, his works have been praised for their dynamic composition and attention to detail. This particular edition depicts greyhounds closing in on a hare. Unable to keep pace, the huntsmen follow behind on horses. Rolling hills and greenery form the background of this etching, where the hand colouring captures the gentle hues of this landscape. Anonymous A Bomber Plane Coming in to Land
Charcoal sketch 34 x 43 cm This charcoal sketch depicts a four-engine bomber coming into land, featuring a further two bombers stationary in a hangar in the background. The circular insignia on the landing plane side distinguishes it as a part of the RAF, although its highly stylised form makes it impossible to identify which of the RAF bomber planes it is. The dynamism of this sketch is particularly striking, as the artist captures the speed of the plane using horizontal lines parallel to the ground. -
Anonymous Camp Northampton Charcoal sketch 34 x 43 cm At first glance, this charcoal sketch seemingly depicts three barns lining a country lane. The scene seems idyllic, trees and farmland forming a rural idyll. The caption of the sketch 'Camp Northampton' reveals it to be, however, a depiction of one of the seven Prisoner of War camps in Northamptonshire. These camps primarily housed German pilots who would work in the adjacent fields to support the farming industry. Some of these camps still stand today, their wooden shells acting as eery reminders of this dark past. Anonymous Air Raid Charcoal sketch 34 x 43 cm At first glance, this charcoal sketch seems fairly innocuous, after all it seems to simply depict a series of parked military vehicles at an operational centre. Look more closely, however, and you will notice the fleet of German bombers flying in formation, swooping through the air. Look even closer and you will notice the clusters of lines radiating outwards: bombs are falling, buildings are being hit and dust is clouding the air. The base has been hit no less than four times and the chaos seems to stretch beyond the narrow frames of this sketch as the bombers fly into the horizon. Colin Fifield (1940-2022) Abstract landscape
Watercolour 26 x 36 cm Colin Fifield was a British artist specialising in painting and pottery. He trained at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before specialising in painting and etching at the Slade School of Art. Over the course of his long career, Fifield displayed a variety of interests, ranging from landscape paintings in oils, watercolours and acrylics to pen and ink drawings. Many of his paintings take inspiration from the landscapes of Kent in South East England, featuring the bucolic pastures and fields. This painting is characteristic of Fifield's artistic output. He playfully depicts a rural landscape scene, incorporating wavy shapes and bright colours. In doing so, he brings the painting to life. The waves through the long crops and grasses evoke the wind breezing through them. The hazy clouds in the sky seem to be moving, and a man-- simplistic in form--walks down the country-lane, appreciating the tranquility of the moment. -

Aquatint with original hand colouring 21 x 27 cm Published by Rudolph Ackermann (1764 - 1834). Joseph Mallord William Turner RA, known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colouring, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent, marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. John Bluck was an aquatint engraver, mainly of topographical views, but also of marine and sporting subjects after his contemporaries. He produced plates for numerous publications. Rudolph Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school at 96 Strand. Here Ackermann set up a lithographic press and began a trade in prints. He later began to manufacture colours and thick carton paper for landscape and miniature painters. Within three years the premises had become too small and he moved to 101 Strand, in his own words "four doors nearer to Somerset House", the seat of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints. Lithograph 75 x 50 cm This poster was a British propaganda piece issued during or after World War II by the National Savings Movement. This campaign aimed to encourage the public to invest in National Savings Certificates, War Bonds, and Defence Bonds to support the country’s financial stability and post-war recovery. The poster features a man poised with his pneumatic drill, grinding away at the walls. His target is not coal or minerals, he is mining instead for national savings bonds and a slew of bonds and bank books tumble down wall. The poster therefore draws a direct parallel between the work undertaken in the mines to fuel the war effort and the war bonds purchased by the British public. Halliwell (1905–1986) was a British artist, illustrator, and designer best known for his vibrant poster designs created for British railway companies during the mid-20th century. Born in Southport, Halliwell developed a strong foundation in art and design early in life. He studied at the Southport School of Art from 1923 to 1926 before graduating to the Royal College of Art in London and subsequently practising as a professional designer from the 1930s. Following his studies, Halliwell married Doris Doyle in Strood Kent, and went on to have a significant teaching career himself, most notably as a lecturer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (later part of Central Saint Martins), where he influenced a new generation of designers and illustrators. Halliwell is perhaps best remembered for his vibrant and engaging poster designs created for British railway companies during the 1930s. His work was characterised by a bright, graphic style that balanced charm with clarity, often depicting idealised scenes of British holiday destinations—from sunny seaside towns to tranquil countryside vistas. Beyond posters, his artistic output included book illustration, commercial design, and stage costume sketches, showcasing his versatility across mediums. His posters continue to remain enduring symbols of a golden age of British travel and design and are displayed in major collections including the London Transport Museum and the V & A. 18x24cm Watercolour Initialled Sir Albert Edward Richardson K.C.V.O., F.R.I.B.A, F.S.A., P.R.A. (1880-1964) was a traditionalist, renowned for his distaste of modern architecture. Rooted firmly in the classical period, he lived a Georgian life, refusing to have electricity in his Georgian house – until his wife finally insisted. Professor of Architecture at UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture from 1929-1955, this was evacuated to Cambridge during the war and he became a fellow of St Catharine’s College. Amongst his other achievements, Richardson was President of the RA, editor of Architect’s Journal and founder of the Georgian Group. For pleasure he painted architectural fantasies; capriccios of buildings he pictured in his mind. Richardson was recipient of the Architectural Association’s Professor Bannister Fletcher Medal in 1902 which was an award for the study of post-Fire London architecture. Proposed alterations for Stables for Mrs Mallowan (Agatha Christie)
Pencil on tracing paper 41 x 30 cm Signed in red crayon lower right. A smart architectural design to improve famed author Agatha Christie's stable block. Christie became Lady Mallowan when she married her second husband, Sir Max Edgar Lucien Mallowan. The church was bombed in 1941 and gutted by fire; subsequently, the church was a ruin open to the sky for over 20 years. It was saved by Lady Parker of Waddington, who formed the Friends of St John's in 1962 to raise money and restore the church to its former glory - a reconstruction in the style of the church's original architect, Thomas Archer. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC. Condition: generally very good. Original poster c. 1943 Printed for HMSO by J Weiner Ltd, London for the Ministry of Aircraft Production Produced by the Bayly-Souster advertising agency, Fleet Street Provenance the estate of Ernest Bendell-Bayly The waste-not-want-not campaign of World War 2 in the UK had to tackle waste at all levels. Here workers in aircraft factories are encouraged to work carefully in order to avoid creating products that had to be scrapped. Not only were the raw materials scrapped, but also the valuable hours of workers' time involved. When Lord Beaverbrook commenced his term as Minister of Aircraft Production in May 1940 it was an industry beset with problems. Aircraft parts were produced in sufficient numbers, but assembly into flyable aircraft proved more challenging – the Castle Bromwich Spitfire factory had not produced a single completed aircraft by this point. Moreover the RAF central depots had large supplies of aircraft that had not been issued to squadrons. Once this was all brought under Beaverbrook’s control, aircraft production increased rapidly. During the Battle of Britain, the British production of fighter aircraft was two-and-a-half times that of Germany. Britain had 644 operable fighters at the start of July 1940 – when the Battle of Britain began – against the German 725. By the end of October 1940, when the German offensive finished, British fighter aircraft had – despite significant losses – increased to 732 whilst the Germans were left with just 275. To achieve this great productivity increase the Ministry was run on informal grounds; few notes were kept; staff members had few formal roles. Printed 1710-1743 Probably the most famous early English mapmaker, John Speed's early life is somewhat of an enigma. He is believed to have trained as a rolling-press printer, but he was at heart an historian granted a sinecure in the Customs House by Queen Elizabeth to indulge his passion, later becoming a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. His first maps were historical, of the Holy Land 'Canaan as it was Possessed both in Abraham and Israels Dayes' and of England and Ireland recording 'all their Civill Warres since the Conquest'. In 1611 he published his 'Hostory of Great Britaine' which he regarded as his magnum opus, but it was the companion atlas 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' that - as the first printed atlas of Great Britain - sealed his reputation. William Rogers engraved the first map, 'the County Palatine of Chester' in about 1600, but following his untimely death the task of engraving was passed to Jodocus Hondius of Amsterdam. By 1612 the atlas was complete, the maps famed for their decorative elements. Many have town plans - Britain's first series of such plans - and descriptive text was printed to the reverse until the 1676 edition. Later printings (up until 1770) were issued without this text. By 1627 it has become a part of a world atlas 'Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World'. During the 17th century the plates passed through the hands of a series of publishers, the 1676 edition of Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell being regarded as its high point with the inclusion for the first time of a series of important maps. However, his greatest passion was recording the details of historical buildings. 'With such subjects before me as cathedrals, abbeys and ancient parish churches...I never made any effort to increase the number of my employments as an architect.' Buckler 1852 Harmoniously working with his father and younger brother, Buckler drew and preserved the designs of ancient structures, many of which no longer survive today. Laurence Dunn (1910 - 2006)

Watercolour 8 x 9 cm Laurence Dunn was an artist known for his depictions of ships. He grew up in Devon, where he practised drawing passing ships, and went on to study at the Central School of Art. He then worked for shipbuilding firm John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, where he contributed to the design of the Royal Yacht. During the Second World War, Dunn worked in naval intelligence. In the early 1960s, he created many line drawings of Atlantic ocean liners. The World Ship Society published the following obituary for Laurence Dunn in 2006: DUNN, Laurence. [December 15 2006 — Lloyds List] Many readers will be saddened by the death of well-known marine artist and writer Laurence Dunn in his 97th year. A man of encyclopaedic knowledge, he began his lifelong love of ships in Brixham, where he meticulously recorded passing traffic with the exquisitely accurate line drawings which later became something of a trademark. While studying at London’s Central School of Art his work was noticed by the Southern Railway, which commissioned profiles of its fleet, and this in turn led to work for Orient Line, where he also designed the well-known corn-coloured hull, and later Thorneycroft, where he helped with shaping draft plans for a new royal yacht. During the second world was he worked for naval intelligence at the Admiralty, where his technique did much to improve recognition standards, and greatly expanded his shipping clientele, becoming personally known to many chairmen. As well as the shipping press he worked for mainstream publications such as Everybody’s, Sphere and the upmarket comic Eagle. Through his many contacts he enjoyed going to sea in a great variety of ships from aircraft carriers to colliers. Laurence wrote several books, starting with ship recognition titles which introduced new standards of layout, but his best known work was probably Passenger Liners, which was widely taken up by the travel trade. His love of Greece, where he was an early publicist of island cruising, let to involvement in reshaping various passenger liners beginning with Greek Line’s OLYMPIA. In later life he designed several sets of shipping stamps for the Crown Agents, produced photographic volumes on Thames and Mediterranean shipping and still found time to enjoy the passing Thames traffic. Our sympathies go to his wife Jennifer, who provided succour to the many ship lovers who beat a path to the welcoming door of their Gravesend home. Condition: very good. Aeroplane identification poster, published 1942 63 x 47 cm A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have several in this series; view them here - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the United States Navy''s main carrier-based scout/dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944. The SBD was also flown by the United States Marine Corps, both from land air bases and aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bomber that delivered the fatal blows to the Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. During Midway, four squadrons of Dauntless dive bombers attacked and sank or fatally damaged all four Japanese fleet carriers present, disabling three of them in the span of just six minutes (Akagi, Kaga, and Sōryū) and, later in the day, Hiryū. During its combat service, the SBD proved to be an excellent naval scout plane and dive bomber. It possessed long range, good handling characteristics, manoeuvrability, potent bomb load, great diving characteristics from the perforated dive brakes, good defensive armament, and ruggedness. Louis Osman (1914 - 1996)
Queen Street, Exeter
Watercolour 25 x 33 cm Inscribed in Osman's hand on old mount (visible in the gallery of photographs). Osman's view of Queen Street in Exeter, complete with modish pedestrians and vehicles typical of the 1930s. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC. Condition: generally very good; some age toning. Watercolour and ink 33 x 50 cm Signed and dated 1958 lower right (dated August 23rd to reverse). A watercolour of the Villa Malcontenta in Venice, nestled between willow trees. The River Brenta flows serenely in the foreground. Villa Foscari is a patrician villa in Mira, near Venice, northern Italy, designed by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. It is also known as La Malcontenta ("The Discontented"), a nickname which - according to a legend - it received when the spouse of one of the Foscaris was locked up in the house because she allegedly did not live up to her conjugal duty. Karl Hagedorn was a painter and illustrator. He was educated in Berlin, and at the Manchester School of Technology, Manchester School of Art, and Slade School of Fine Art (where he later taught), before training in Paris under Maurice Denis. Hagedorn showed regularly at the Society of Modern Painters in Manchester, and then (from 1913 onwards), at the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club. He became a British citizen in 1914, and served in the British Army during World War I. During World War II, he sold pictures of military subjects to the United Kingdom Government's War Artists' Advisory Committee. He was also commissioned by the Recording Britain project to produce views of Middlesex and Derbyshire. Condition: very good.
