Peter Biegel (1913–1988) was a distinguished British sporting artist renowned for his dynamic portrayals of horses, hounds, and rural life. A keen rider himself, Biegel brought firsthand knowledge and deep affection for his subjects to his work. He trained at the Slade School of Fine Art and later studied under Lionel Edwards, whose influence helped shape his style. Biegel exhibited with the Royal Academy and became a sought-after illustrator for sporting books and magazines. His paintings are widely celebrated for their lively brushwork, accurate anatomy, and ability to capture the thrill of the chase and the quiet dignity of country life.
This lively countryside scene captures the spirited energy of a beagle hunt in full pursuit. Set against a backdrop of open fields and distant village rooftops, the painting features huntsmen in green jackets guiding a lively pack as they course through tall grass. Biegel’s deft brushwork and keen eye for composition bring motion, atmosphere, and a strong sense of place to the scene. The inclusion of a hare in the foreground adds a further dramatic focal point, heightening the tension and excitement of the moment.
