Charles Benjamin Beardsworth Mining for National Savings -- Back your efforts with national savings for future prosperity
Lithograph 75 x 50 cm This poster was a British propaganda piece issued during or after World War II by the National Savings Movement. This campaign aimed to encourage the public to invest in National Savings Certificates, War Bonds, and Defence Bonds to support the country’s financial stability and post-war recovery. The poster features a man poised with his pneumatic drill, grinding away at the walls. His target is not coal or minerals, he is mining instead for national savings bonds and a slew of bonds and bank books tumble down wall. The poster therefore draws a direct parallel between the work undertaken in the mines to fuel the war effort and the war bonds purchased by the British public. William Black Design for Sculpture (1966)
Watercolour 18 x 16 cm Signed and dated lower right. A design for a metal sculpture, on a blue- and grey-toned background. William Black was a St Ives artist who began his career as an architect. In the 1950s he came into money and ran away to St Ives to become a professional artist, studying under John Tunnard and associating with other artists like Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Black rarely put up work for sale during his lifetime and is known for his architectural and deconstructivist sculptures which espoused the modernist spirit of the St Ives group in the 1960s. Gill Bradley Monkeys Loose in Notting Hill, 1927
Lithograph 100 x 65 cm "The monkey hunt which has been entertaining all but those immediately associated with the fugitives is still proceeding. Yesterday morning three of the thirteen members of a monkey jazz band which escaped from the Notting Hill district of London last Friday were still at large. Two of them had entrenched themselves, so to speak, under the arches which support the platform of Latimer Road Metropolitan Railway Station, South Kensington, while the third, Franko, the leader of the band, had left that locality, having apparently boarded a train for Paddington on Monday. He has been "seen" by various people in districts as far apart as Ealing, Brixton, and Brentford. Late on Tuesday night it was discovered that Bimbo, the drummer, had also left Latimer Road." "Five of them got into my store, and ate 28 lbs of biscuits. Eight of us, including two policemen, caught one, after three hours and after sifting two tons of oats. Then it escaped, and we spent three and a half hours recapturing it." What an eventful day the 24th of November 1927 was... Franco, Bimbo and another unnamed monkey made a break for freedom, tunnelling their way through the London underground, venturing far and wide across the capital. Inspired by this adventure, Gill Bradley painted the chaotic simian scenes in her 2014 entry for the Serco Prize for Illustration. The illustration uses bold colours, exaggerated proportions, and a mix of realism and abstraction to create a chaotic and dynamic scene. The judges of the competition 'were drawn to the evident humour of the image, strong colour palette and the fact that it was a bit bonkers, and felt that commuters would find it very intriguing to look at during their travels.' Vivian Bewick Montezumas Daughter, original vintage book cover
Wash and gouache 34 x 28 cm This work was originally a book cover design for the historical adventure novel 'Montezumas Daughter' by the Victorian writer Sir Henry Rider Haggard. The cover depicts two men, presumably including the protagonist Harry Thurston, engaged in a duel. As one of the subjects falls across the cover, his hand reaching helplessly outwards, Bewick alludes to the tragic themes explored in this intriguing novel exploring colonialism and the Spanish Inquisition. On the reverse of this cover, Bewick personally wrote the medium and his address at Buckhurst Hall, rendering it a unique addition to any collection. Vivian Bewick (1912–1999) was a British artist and educator, notable for his contributions to mid-20th-century art and his role as a tutor at the Buckhurst Hill Community Association (BHCA). He was also a descendant of Thomas Bewick, the renowned 19th-century engraver celebrated for his depictions of birds and animals. -

In doing so, the Antiquaries hoped to preserve and disseminate knowledge of England’s architectural heritage. This engraving depicts the ornate monument of King Edward IV in St George's Chapel at Windsor. Moored Barges Watercolour 23 x 32 cm C.1900 This watercolour depicts two onlookers, perhaps a grandfather and granddaughter, watching over the moored barges in a canal. Although the location of this painting is unknown, the presence of horse-drawn barges and larger sailing vessels suggests that the setting may be situated at the confluence between a canal and the sea. The gentle terracotta tones of the roofs and footpath contribute a certain serenity to this otherwise industrial scene, as the artist successfully captures the aura of this early 20th century scene. Gerald Mac Spink (flourished 1920 - 1940)

Pencil on tracing paper 20 x 32 cm Spink was a skilled artist, illustrator, and designer who produced a series of posters in the inter-war period for companies including the London Underground, Southern Railways, LNER, Hawker Engineering, and British Steel. He won a prize in 1933 from the Imperial Institute for his poster artwork. He also worked as an aeronautical engineer in Kingston-on-Thames for Hawker Engineering; his greatest achievement was the creation of the 'Squanderbug', a 500cc racing car which he built in 1947, and which races even to this day. Mount Vernon Hospital is located in Northwood, in north-west Greater London and was founded as The North London Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest in a mansion on Hampstead High Street in 1860. A purpose-built but beautiful hospital at Mount Vernon was built in 1881 in the French Renaissance style but in 1901, it was decided to build a more-modern facility on part of the Northwood Park Estate which was opened in 1904.

Laurence Dunn (1910 - 2006) Naess Sovereign
Pencil drawing 29 x 43 cm A vibrantly coloured lithograph depicting the Naess Sovereign at sea. The Naess Sovereign was originally built in 1961 by Mitsubishi Zosen, Nagasaki. When delivered, she was the third largest vessel in the world, and the largest vessel under British flag. In 1963, she was then followed by her sister vessel: the Naess Champion. Both ships were owned by the Naess group, one of the largest private shipping countries in the world. They were subsequently sold to Burmah Oil and the Sovereign was eventually laid up in 1975 and broken up in 1977. Laurence Dunn was a well-known British marine artist and writer known for his depictions of ships. He grew up in Devon, where he practised drawing passing ships, and went on to study at the Central School of Art. He then worked for shipbuilding firm John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, where he contributed to the design of the Royal Yacht. During the Second World War, Dunn worked in naval intelligence. In the early 1960s, he created many line drawings of Atlantic ocean liners. Upon his death in 2006, the World Ship Society published the following obituary: DUNN, Laurence. [December 15 2006 — Lloyds List] Many readers will be saddened by the death of well-known marine artist and writer Laurence Dunn in his 97th year. A man of encyclopaedic knowledge, he began his lifelong love of ships in Brixham, where he meticulously recorded passing traffic with the exquisitely accurate line drawings which later became something of a trademark. While studying at London’s Central School of Art his work was noticed by the Southern Railway, which commissioned profiles of its fleet, and this in turn led to work for Orient Line, where he also designed the well-known corn-coloured hull, and later Thorneycroft, where he helped with shaping draft plans for a new royal yacht. During the second world was he worked for naval intelligence at the Admiralty, where his technique did much to improve recognition standards, and greatly expanded his shipping clientele, becoming personally known to many chairmen. As well as the shipping press he worked for mainstream publications such as Everybody’s, Sphere and the upmarket comic Eagle. Through his many contacts he enjoyed going to sea in a great variety of ships from aircraft carriers to colliers. Laurence wrote several books, starting with ship recognition titles which introduced new standards of layout, but his best known work was probably Passenger Liners, which was widely taken up by the travel trade. His love of Greece, where he was an early publicist of island cruising, let to involvement in reshaping various passenger liners beginning with Greek Line’s OLYMPIA. In later life he designed several sets of shipping stamps for the Crown Agents, produced photographic volumes on Thames and Mediterranean shipping and still found time to enjoy the passing Thames traffic. Our sympathies go to his wife Jennifer, who provided succour to the many ship lovers who beat a path to the welcoming door of their Gravesend home. Accidents Sometimes Happen... Work Carefully Avoid Scrap
Original poster c. 1943 Printed for HMSO by J Weiner Ltd, London for the Ministry of Aircraft Production Produced by the Bayly-Souster advertising agency, Fleet Street Provenance the estate of Ernest Bendell-Bayly The waste-not-want-not campaign of World War 2 in the UK had to tackle waste at all levels. Here workers in aircraft factories are encouraged to work carefully in order to avoid creating products that had to be scrapped. Not only were the raw materials scrapped, but also the valuable hours of workers' time involved. When Lord Beaverbrook commenced his term as Minister of Aircraft Production in May 1940 it was an industry beset with problems. Aircraft parts were produced in sufficient numbers, but assembly into flyable aircraft proved more challenging – the Castle Bromwich Spitfire factory had not produced a single completed aircraft by this point. Moreover the RAF central depots had large supplies of aircraft that had not been issued to squadrons. Once this was all brought under Beaverbrook’s control, aircraft production increased rapidly. During the Battle of Britain, the British production of fighter aircraft was two-and-a-half times that of Germany. Britain had 644 operable fighters at the start of July 1940 – when the Battle of Britain began – against the German 725. By the end of October 1940, when the German offensive finished, British fighter aircraft had – despite significant losses – increased to 732 whilst the Germans were left with just 275. To achieve this great productivity increase the Ministry was run on informal grounds; few notes were kept; staff members had few formal roles. Engraving 12 x 16 cm An eighteenth-century view of Le College Neuf (New College), engraved by Pieter van der Aa after David Loggan, the noted engraver, draughtsman, and painter. Founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham, New College is one of the oldest colleges at the university and was the first to admit undergraduate students. Architecturally, New College was innovative in its design, in that it was all planned around an enclosed quadrangle (finished 1386). This was the first quadrangle of its type, though it has since become one of the defining features of colleges across Oxford and Cambridge. Pieter van der Aa of Leiden was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He is noted for the many engravings he produced after David Loggan's series of Oxford and Cambridge colleges and costumes. In 1727 Van Der Aa illustrated "Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne & de L'Irelande" by James Beeverell, the book in which this engraving appears. Condition: a good impression. Aquatint with original hand colouring 30 x 22 cm An engraving of one of New College Chapel's magnificent stained glass windows, designed by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1777. Sir Joshua Reynolds was one of England's leading portraitists in the 18th century; he was also a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts. Charles George Lewis was a British printmaker, and engraved many works after other artists as well as producing his own. He was he second son of Frederick Christian Lewis and learned drawing and engraving from his father. Rudolph Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school at 96 Strand. Here Ackermann set up a lithographic press and began a trade in prints. He later began to manufacture colours and thick carton paper for landscape and miniature painters. Within three years the premises had become too small and he moved to 101 Strand, in his own words "four doors nearer to Somerset House", the seat of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints. William Logsdail (1859-1944)

Oil on board 39 x 28 cm Signed lower right. In original Watts-style gilt frame. Logsdail was educated at Lincoln Cathedral School and then Lincoln School of Art. Initially intending to become an architect, he was encouraged to divert his attentions to painting. After winning a Gold Medal in a competition against students of other English art schools, Logsdail continued his painting career at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Antwerp. His promise was recognised by the Royal Household when his 1880 picture The Fish Market was purchased for Osborne House. Logsdail went on to spend the next twenty years in Venice, studying and painting the city's architecture. His 1883 rendering of the Piazza of St Mark's, Venice, was named by the Royal Academy as picture of the year. He also spent time painting the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. In 1912, having moved away from architectural painting and towards portraiture, he was elected to the Society of Portrait Painters. He settled in Oxfordshire in 1922. David Loggan (1634 - 1692)

Engraving 31 x 49 cm Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645 - 1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' also includes an engraving of Winchester College (Winchester and New College share William of Wykeham as their founder) whilst the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder, Henry VIII, with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views from this era required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist; it was not until 1783 that it became possible for artists to ascend via hot air balloons and view the scenes they were depicting from above. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in Roman numerals in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in much smaller numbers. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK, 'Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne' (circa 1708). The contemporary artist Andrew Ingamells has produced a highly-acclaimed series of etchings which bring Loggan’s original vision up to date. Condition: repaired tear to central fold; has been washed. William Matthison (1853-1926)
New College, Oxford: Front Quad
Watercolour 35 x 52 cm Signed lower right. A charming watercolour of New College's Front Quad complete with members of the college in academic dress, wandering birds, and a gardener mowing the grass. William of Wykeham, who founded New College in 1379, was an ambitious builder. His vision for the college was of a Chapel, Hall, Library, and rooms for tutors and students to work and live in, all of which would be built around a quadrangle. This was the first time a college had been set in this way, and it became a model for colleges worldwide. Matthison was born near Birmingham and attended King Edward’s School in the city. He learnt drawing at the Birmingham Central School of Art and then became a pupil of Birmingham artist Edward Watson. He became a professional artist in 1875 and moved to Oxfordshire a few years after; this was where he had the opportunity to produce many of the Oxford views for which he is known today. In 1902 he moved to Park Town in Oxford and was commissioned by Robert Peel to paint more than seventy views of the University of Oxford, which were subsequently made into postcards. Priced at seven for a shilling, they were only available from E Cross of Pembroke Street (a long-since closed business). Raphael Tuck & Sons also commissioned him to produce postcard scenes of Cambridge. Matthison’s views of Oxford were later printed in Fifty Watercolour Drawings of Oxford, published in 1912 by Alden & Co. Condition: generally very good; a few spots to sky. Hugh Casson (1910 - 1999)

Lithograph 25 x 39 cm Signed, titled and dated in plate, and numbered 153/500 and signed lower right in pencil. Casson's view of New College's Garden Quad, complete with picnicking undergraduates. Sir Hugh Casson was educated at Eastbourne College; St John’s College, Cambridge; and the Bartlett School of Architecture. Trained in the 1930s in the early modernist style, he taught at the Cambridge School of Architecture. After employment as a camoufleur during World War 2 by the Air Ministry, in 1948 he was appointed as director of architecture for the Festival of Britain. A close friend of the Royal Family, he undertook designs for the 1953 coronation, designed the interior of the Royal Yacht Britannia (“The overall idea was to give the impression of a country house at sea”), and taught the young Charles III to paint in watercolours. Amongst his architectural achievements are the Elephant House at London Zoo, the 1978 redevelopment of Bristol Docks, the Raised Faculty Building for The University of Cambridge, and a building for the Royal College of Art. He published a number of illustrated books, of which Casson’s Oxford and Casson’s Cambridge are probably the best known. A limited edition series of prints was produced from the paintings. Between 1902 and 1904 William Nicholson lived in Woodstock; during this period he made several architectural studies of Oxford's colleges and other University buildings. John Baptist Malchair (1730 – 1812)

Lithograph 33 x 46 cm A 1929 lithograph from a 1767 watercolour of New College by John Malchair. The artist's composition highlights the pale stone of New College on a winter's day. The chapel's spires stretch upward into a cold, cloud-filled sky, as do the bare branches of the trees. Malchair's watercolour (which is held by the Ashmolean museum) was reproduced as a lithograph in 1929, to be published in the "Oxford Almanack". The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanac published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to "dwindling interest"). The almanac traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanac artists have included James Basire, Michael Burghers, J. M. W. Turner, and John Piper. Malchair was a German-born watercolourist, violinist, drawing master, and collector of traditional European music. He is described as “one of the most distinctive figures of eighteenth century Oxford”, and is recognised as having been an influence on later landscape artists, including John Constable. Malchair was a talented artist, producing hundreds of paintings of English landscapes. His legacy is the collection of hundreds of sketches and watercolours of historical, architectural and topographical interest, particularly of Oxford's medieval buildings. Condition: very good. Original vintage poster 102 x 64 cm To celebrate the launch of the Intercity 225 from London to Edinburgh, Intercity commissioned five paintings from Brendan Neiland of stations on the line. These paintings were incorporated into poster designs. Neiland is known for his interpretations of city life. His work is widely exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide including, in Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Tate Gallery London, The Collections of the British Council and the Arts Council of Great Britain. He is represented by the Redfern Gallery and has had numerous shows internationally, including at the Galerie Belvedere in Singapore, who represent him in Singapore and the Far East. Watercolour 40 x 57 cm Provenance: Marlborough Galleries. Signed lower right. A characterful Piper view of Newchurch Church, Kent, with its leaning tower. Piper was rather enamoured by Romney Marsh's churches; the architectural historian Nicholas Pevsner commissioned him in 1947 to produce a book on the area for King Penguin Books. Piper stayed for a time there and the published book included water-colours, drawings, and musings on the Marsh. John Piper CH was an English painter, printmaker, and designer of stained-glass windows. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics and ceramics. This psychological thriller follows the story of a charming yet mysterious young man named Dan, who takes a job as a caregiver for Mrs. Bramson, an irritable and wealthy elderly woman living in a secluded English countryside home. Despite his charisma, Dan harbours a dark secret, as he is revealed to be a murderer. This striking composition features Bewick's characteristically masterful use of silhouette to create an effect of suspense and tension, in-keeping with the themes of the play. The bright colours against dark gouache make this piece stand out and notably distinguish it as a beautiful work within Bewick's extensive oeuvre. Vivian Bewick (1912–1999) was a British artist and educator, notable for his contributions to mid-20th-century art and his role as a tutor at the Buckhurst Hill Community Association (BHCA). He was also a descendant of Thomas Bewick, the renowned 19th-century engraver celebrated for his depictions of birds and animals. -
