Watercolour and pen 28 x 35 cm Signed lower right. What is particularly interesting about this picture is the contrast between the rugged watercolour wash of the lawn and the fine pen expression of the college's architecture. Tavener painted several views of the city of Cheltenham and its architectural landmarks; Cheltenham College is a public school just outside the city, and Tavener expertly elicits its mid-nineteenth century architectural style here. -

Robert Woodlark, Founder of Catherine Hall, Cambridge from a Picture at the Hall (1815)
Hand-coloured aquatint 24 x 20 cm Published by Rudolph Ackermann (1764 - 1834). A copy of this engraving is held by the National Portrait Gallery, reference NPG D4871. Robert Woodlark (also spelt Wodelarke) was an English academic and priest. He was the Provost of King's College, Cambridge, and the founder of St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He drew up the original statutes for the governance of the college and obtained a charter from Edward IV, 16 August 1475. Woodlark was a professor of sacred theology at the University and served as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1459 to 1460, and again from 1462 to 1463. Rudolph Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school at 96 Strand. Here Ackermann set up a lithographic press and began a trade in prints. He later began to manufacture colours and thick carton paper for landscape and miniature painters. Within three years the premises had become too small and he moved to 101 Strand, in his own words "four doors nearer to Somerset House", the seat of the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1797 and 1800 Ackermann rapidly developed his print and book publishing business, encompassing many different genres including topography, caricature, portraits, transparencies and decorative prints. Roberts Dunstan DSO - Tail-end Charlie on Lancaster Bomber
Original Silver Gelatin photograph, c. 1943 20 x 15 cm The sitting-down war played out in the skies suited amputees who wanted to continue killing the enemy. Douglas Bader famously bailed out of his Spitfire over Germany, leaving behind his artificial legs. There were others who flew with artificial legs, including Dunstan. Dunstan was born in 1922, lying about his age (by three years) in order to join up in June 1940. In January 1941, serving with the Royal Australian Engineers, he was injured in one leg near Tobruk (in Libya) on a night reconnaisance raid. After five operations his leg was amputated; after ten more he was returned to Australia and invalided out of the services in February 1942. A few months later, he caught sight of a poster recruiting for the RAAF, and volunteered his services, enlisting on 23 June 1942 - having spent some time convincing the RAAF that there were roles that he could undertake successfully. Following training at the RAAF Bombing and Gunnery School he was soon on his way to the UK, sailing on 24 August from Sydney. He was soon serving at RAF Breighton in Yorkshire with 460 Sqn RAAF as rear gunner in an Avro Lancaster bomber. As he walked to the aircraft he used his crutches; onboard he would crawl to his post in the tail. On the night of 22/23 October 1943, aboard W4927, his Lancaster left Binbrook for a bombing raid over Germany. Above Kassel, the target, a Lancaster bomber above them dropped its bombs. Two incendiary bombs dropped through W4927; one hitting the flight engineer's jump seat - beside the pilot - the other falling through the middle of the aeroplane and severing the oxygen supply to the rear and mid-upper turrets - the former being Dunstan's. A German night fighter chose this moment to attack W4927. Befuddled by lack of oxygen the gunners were unable to shoot, W4927 losing its port elevator and receiving holes in its port wing and fuselage - and one cannon shell went into Dunstan's rear turret. However the pilot nursed the plane back to England, where it crash landed at either RAF Elsham Wold, or Bisham - sources vary. On 3/4 November 1943 Dunstan completed his thirtieth mission, to Dusseldorf, the day before his twenty-first birthday. He was gazetted for his DSO on 7 November. In 1944 he returned to Australia and in 1956 was elected to the Victoria State Parliament where he held ministerial posts for water supply, and subsequently for public works. -
Roy M Whittenbury (fl. 1920-1955) The Pool of London
Oil on canvasboard 29 x 39.5 cm Whittenbury concentrated on marine subjects. Here he captures the Pool of London - that stretch of the River Thames from London Bridge to just below Tower Bridge which is controlled by the Port of London. Although no longer the busy port depicted in the painting, it is one of the reasons for London's political and economical pre-eminence over the last thousand years. ROSEMARY ELLIS (1910-1988) Born in North London in 1910, Rosemary’s father died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1919 and the family moved in with her mother’s parents in the New Forest. This was an environment where she grew to love nature and animals, constant themes in her artistic works. In 1928 she began studying art at the Regent Street Polytechnic, meeting her tutor Clifford Ellis – a mere three years her senior, who was to become her husband and life-long artistic collaborator. They married in 1931 and after this date almost all their freelance work bears both their signatures. They developed a joint cipher, C&RE, which includes their names in alphabetical order, not representing any order of seniority. They produced posters in the 1930s for big clients such as London Transport, Shell, and The Empire Marketing Board. Clifford Ellis became head of Bath School of Art, and then served during the Second World War as camoufleur and official war artist – with the Grenadier Guards. Rosemary was also an official war artist, working on the Recording Britain project whereby artists were set to record the buildings and landscape of Britain lest it be permanently damaged by the Germans. Following the war Lyons Tearooms chose the Ellises to produce one of their famous lithographs, to be hung in their tearooms and the Ellises chose a view of Teignmouth – we have some views of Teignmouth for sale painted from this time. Rowland Hilder
Shell Guide to Warwickshire Original poster c. 1960s 76x51cm Shell commissioned a series of posters to go with their County Guide books, and they commissioned paintings by the leading artists of the day. Rowland Hilder was a well known landscape artist and book illustrator. Born in New York state, his English father moved the family to Kent, England in 1915. It was here his natural talent for drawing was noticed by his school. Later Hilder went to study at Goldsmith’s College in London. He was well known as an accomplished watercolorist, particularly in his sensitive handling of the sky and earth. Between 1964 and 1974 he was president of England’s Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Condition: mounted in conservation mount and wrapped in plastic sleeve (mount hides short edge tears). -
Rowland Suddaby (1912-1972) English Roses - Still Life
Oil on board 39x29cm (frame 58x46cm) c. 1950s Artist's label to reverse In a fine hand-finished frame Born in Kimberworth, Yorkshire, Suddaby commenced study in 1926 at the Sheffield College of Art on a scholarship, coming to London at nineteen in 1931. Following an early marriage and an initial struggle as an artist his first successful show was at the Wertheim Gallery in London in 1935, followed by a series of shows at the Redfern Gallery from 1936. For the latter he was their replacement for Christopher Wood (who had sadly killed himself in 1930 by jumping under a train) and he painted assured oils and watercolours - some showing Wood influences - in London and Cornwall. Popular with both art critics and the buying public he had great success. Early in World War Two, Suddaby moved - with his family - to the Suffolk countryside near Sudbury to become curator of the Gainsborough's House Museum, East Anglia providing him with the foundations for the pictures for which he is now well known. In 1940 he was chosen for the 'Recording Britain' project. Showing something of the influence of John Nash, his distinctive depiction of the East Anglian countryside, with its hedges and fences is instantly recognisable. His still life paintings which he also painted in the 1940s and 50s were exhibited at the Leger Galleries and at the Colchester Art Society of which he was a founder member. By the 1960s he had evolved his style towards abstraction. He was also a noted designer, producing textiles and furnishings and designing posters for Shell. Roy Carnon (1911-2002) Derelict Catalina Redhills Lake near Madras
'Used in Stocks for Gunnery Practice' Oil on board, artist's painted frame Signed and dated 1946 and inscribed with title to reverse Click here for other works by Carnon. This 1946 painting of a derelict Second World War aircraft is a portrait of postwar disillusionment. The battered Catalinas which had survived the war became useful only as ground-based objects for target practice. Carnon's brooding colours and impasto application of paint illustrate how the technologies which helped the Allies to win the war became, overnight, unnecessary. The airmen based in India similarly became unnecessary, but unable to be demobilised they initiated the so-called RAF Mutiny in January 1946. Carnon attended Chiswick Art School becoming an illustrator. In 1965 he was responsible for visualising spacecraft for 2001: A Space Odyssey, being designer of the iconic 'wheel' spacestation. Gray’s design for this memorial window commemorates the lives of those lost in the Langenbruck bus crash, 11 February 1985, when a double-decker bus carrying 40 musicians from the band of Royal Air Force Germany, crashed on an autobahn between Nuremberg and Munich. Twenty-one of the occupants were killed in the crash. As the text in the design remembers: this window is ‘In memory of our friends of the Band of the Royal Air Force Germany who lost their lives in the tragic Autobahn accident near Munich on 11 February 1985’.

Original vintage poster 101 x 63 cm A text poster advertising Southern Railway as a means of travelling to and from Royal Ascot. Graham Sutherland OM was an English artist known for his romantic, abstract landscapes and portraits of public figures, including Churchill and the Queen Mother. Sutherland spent the 1920s mostly making landscape prints, but, following the collapse of the print market in the early 1930s branched out into watercolours. He also undertook a few commercial commissions for posters, working for London Transport, Shell and others. He served as an official war artist in the Second World War, painting industrial scenes on the British home front. After the war he worked in oils and explored figurative painting. Original vintage poster 76 x 50 cm A delightfully quaint vintage poster with a series of important and relevant pedestrian safety messages. From its foundation in 1916 onwards, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents published dozens of highly artistic posters encouraging people to take precautions and prevent injuries (for example, telling factory workers to wear goggles and inspect their tools, or advising drivers to watch out for children in the road). This poster advises those visiting the country to use footpaths and cross roads carefully, and suggests that city-dwellers walk on pavements and only cross at pedestrian crossings. The Royal Wedding: Picture Map of the Route through London (1947)

Complete with slip showing the genealogy of the two parties. Princess Elizabeth (later Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip married on Thursday 20th November 1947 at Westminster Abbey in London. This map, commissioned and sold by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, was designed by N. V. Gray. It depicts the route the carriage processions took on the way to the Abbey; Princess Elizabeth and her father King George Vi travelled in the magnificent Irish State Coach. Walter Hoyle (1922 - 2000)

Linocut 62 x 46 cm Signed, titled, and inscribed A/P in pencil. Possibly unique. Hoyle's view of Rugby School. The school's architecture is depicted in shades of blue and grey, with an orange patch of sun in the cloudy sky above. A green garden peeks out from between the buildings, which lean gently away from one another. Hoyle trained at Beckenham School of Art and the Royal College of Art. At the latter he was strongly influenced by Edward Bawden, one of Britain’s greatest linocut printers. Bawden had been commissioned by the 1951 Festival of Britain to produce a mural for the South Bank, and chose Hoyle to assist on account of his great talent. Hoyle moved to Great Bardfield in Essex, becoming a part of the Great Bardfield group of artists; diverse in style, they created figurative work, in stark contrast to the abstract art of the St Ives artists at the opposite end of the country. Hoyle taught at St Martin’s School of Art from 1951-60, the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1960-64, and the Cambridge School of Art from 1964-1985, during which time he launched Cambridge Print Editions. His work is held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, The British Museum, Kettle’s Garden and the Fry Art Gallery. Ruislip Gardens Station (1938)
Pen, ink and watercolour 70 x 50 cm Initialled and dated 4 3 38. A 1938 design for the new Ruislip Gardens tube station, commissioned by the Great Western Railway (GWR) for its proposed western extension to the Central Line. The design's Art Deco lettering befits London Transport's aesthetic in the 1930s. Lewis brings his designs to life by including smartly-dressed characters entering and leaving the stations. Ruislip Gardens Station, when built, did not adhere to this design. The Central line opened in 1900, between Shepherd's Bush and Bank; it extended westwards to Ealing Broadway in 1920. Two years after the formation of London Transport in 1933, an extensive New Works Programme began, proposing a westwards extension of the line to Denham. Brian Lewis created designs for nine stations in early 1938, but the Second World War broke out before they could be built. By the time the extension had been built, Lewis was no longer chief architect of the GWR - the stations were modified and completed by Frederick Francis Charles Curtis instead. The extension to Greenford opened in 1947 and finally reached West Ruislip in 1948. Denham never actually became part of the tube line, owing to the establishment of the green belt. Brian Lewis was born in Tasmania, attended school in Melbourne, and subsequently obtained a Diploma in Architecture in 1928 from the University of Melbourne. He then moved to the UK to study at the Liverpool School of Architecture, winning scholarships in each of his three years of study to fund extensive European travel. He married a fellow Liverpool architectural student, Hilary Archer. After moving to London, he took up employment with the GWR in their architects’ office; he also lectured at a local polytechnic, and moonlighted with his wife at home on mainly residential commissions – rather different projects from the hotels and stations which GWR commissioned from him. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy of Arts, showing superb measured drawings of historic buildings. In the Second World War he enlisted with the Second Imperial Australian Force, serving in the Middle East, then transferred to the Royal Australian Engineers where he became a Captain. In 1943 he was sent to London to help GWR repair bomb damage. Lewis became Chief Architect of GWR in 1945 (following the retirement of the noted Percy Emerson Culverhouse), and the first Chair of Architecture at Melbourne University in 1947. He also became the consulting architect for the major buildings of the Australian National University in Canberra, producing an imaginative site plan and designing University House, which was awarded the Sulman medal in 1954. He also designed the Risdon Prison Complex in 1960. He retired in 1971 to paint watercolours and write his memoirs. Condition: generally very good; a few handling marks and two holes from filing. In 1987, money was put aside for something to commemorate the Ruislip Library’s 50th anniversary; instead of another bench in a reading room, Gray received a commission for a stained glass window. This was the first window Gray made from her home in Shropshire and she used the nearby willow trees to inspire the wreath of willow leaves and central ‘Tree of Knowledge'—a pollarded willow. The choice of tree was highly intentional as, coincidentally, a librarian by the name Miss Pollard had also died that year.

Russian Aircraft Recognition Chart (c. 1940s - World War II era)
Original vintage poster 76 x 102 cm Published by the Ministry of Supply. Many of these aircraft would have been in use during World War II and very familiar to the Allies. A rather attractive recognition chart - in stark contrast to many similar posters which employ a less artistic approach. Gerald Mac Spink (flourished 1920 - 1940)
Sailing ship
Pencil 31 x 38 cm A stormy sea and the wind in her sails. Spink was a skilled artist, illustrator, and designer who produced a series of posters in the inter-war period for companies including the London Underground, Southern Railways, LNER, Hawker Engineering, and British Steel. He won a prize in 1933 from the Imperial Institute for his poster artwork. He also worked as an aeronautical engineer in Kingston-on-Thames for Hawker Engineering; his greatest achievement was the creation of the 'Squanderbug', a 500cc racing car which he built in 1947, and which races even to this day. Saling Hall, in Essex, has a long and rich history, dating back to the early 12th century when Sir Baldwin Wiscart was the first recorded Lord of the Manor. After his his son, the house passed to the knightly family of Bibbesworth, who lived there for four generations. Sir Walter de Bibbesworth was a crusader and a poet (in French). Nothing remains of the first Saling Hall which was rebuilt around 1590 by the Maxey family who had bought the hall in 1487. The house faced further remodelling by its 17th century owner, Martin Carter, a lawyer. He ornamented the new facade with Dutch gables, which are the latest example of their kind in Essex, and the house has changed little since. The hall passed through many more hands before it was bought, in 1935, by Lady Isabella Carlyle (née Barton) who was a passionate gardener and gave the Hall its first modern gardens. Lady Carlyle sold the Hall in 1971 to Hugh Johnson, a well known garden writer, who continued Lady Carlyle’s work on the gardens. This design is a final drawing for a stained glass window commissioned by Johnson for a fanlight in Saling Hall. Johnson wished the design to include the plants he grew in his own garden to symbolise the seasons. Gray designed the panel using Corsican Hellebore for winter, the Crown Imperial Fritillary for spring, Agapanthas for summer, and Japanese Anemones for autumn. Gray also included vines to frame the design and nod to Johnson’s oenological interests.
