Lithograph 61 x 48 cm Provenance: Marlborough Galleries. Signed in pencil lower right. Piper's saturnine depiction of Oxburgh Hall, a moated country house in Norfolk now owned by the National Trust. John Piper CH was an English painter, printmaker, and designer of stained-glass windows. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics and ceramics. Watercolour 24 x 32 cm Signed and dated lower right. The painter and draughtsman Ken Messer is closely related to Oxford and its architecture in several ways. Born in Newport, South Wales, he was educated at the City of Oxford High School for Boys in Oxford, and then spent six years working as an accountant in Oxford. He then joined British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a steward, flying internationally. Injury due to a car accident during the 1960s meant that he joined the design department of Pergamon Press in Oxford at the age of 33. Six years later, he was appointed to the position of studio manager, in charge of art and design. In 1974, Messer left Pergamon Press to become a freelance graphic designer. He started painting more watercolours, becoming a full-time artist. During the 1980s, his ink drawings were regularly published in the Oxford Times. He has sometimes been called "The Oxford Artist" because of his large number of works depicting Oxford. He and his wife Dilys lived at first in Richmond upon Thames and then in Abingdon, just south of Oxford. Messer's work has been shown at the Mall Galleries for the annual exhibitions of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours annual exhibitions. Condition: very good. Hilary Hennes (née Hilary Miller) (1919 - 1993)

Watercolour and pencil 38 x 56 cm Provenance: the artist's studio sale. With notes by the artist in pencil upper right. Two richly-coloured fruit bowl designs by Hennes in watercolour, surrounded by various other bowl designs sketched in pencil. Hilary Miller was born in London, where her father was a curator at the South London Art Gallery. She attended Blackheath High School and, from 1936 to 1940, studied at the Blackheath School of Art, and then for a further three years at the Royal College of Art. After graduating, she taught at the South East Sussex Technical College and in 1946 married the artist Hubert Hennes. The couple lived in Oxford, where they both held teaching posts at the Oxford School of Art. Between 1948 and 1967 Miller frequently exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy in London, and also illustrated a number of books on gardening and natural history, such as 'The Living World' and 'Boff's Book of Gardening'. Original vintage poster 102 x 64 cm Donald Brun produced his famous series of posters for Switzerland as global travel became more popular. Davos is depicted as a marvellous and brightly-coloured resort full of beauteous skiers, pony sleds, and ice skaters. Trident on the Shore
Pencil and wash 28 x 42 cm A 19th century engraving of a ship near a shore. Various figures, including one wielding a trident, appear in the foreground. John Cantiloe Joy and William Joy were brothers who worked together as English marine artists. During the 1820s, the brothers' paintings were exhibited at the Norwich Society of Artists, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Academy and at the British Institution. They belonged to the Norwich School of painters which specialised in maritime scenes and views of rural Norfolk and Norwich. Condition: generally very good; mounted to board. Edwin La Dell (1914-1970)
The Meadows, Oxford
Lithograph 40 x 55 cm Signed, titled, and numbered 31/80 in pencil. A bright blue winter sky looks over Christ Church Meadows, complete with pedestrians waltzing down Deadman's Walk. La Dell studied at the Sheffield School of Art, where he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. From 1934 to 1940 John Nash was the head of printmaking there, and taught La Dell. La Dell himself became head of lithography there in 1948, and remained in post until his death. During the war La Dell was an official war artist and a camofleur, but he is probably best known for his lithographs of Oxford and Cambridge that he published himself. His works are widely held in the public collections, including the Royal Academy and the Government Art Collection, the latter of which holds many of his views of Cambridge. Condition: very good. John Robert Murray McCheyne (1911 - 1982)

Polished redwood 96 cm high Provenance: the artist's estate. A significant work by the artist. This sensual mid-century modern nude conveys a sense of monumental abstraction through its sloping curvatures. It swells and recedes, demonstrating not only the sinuous possibilities of the human figure, but also those of the Hepworth- and Moore-influenced abstract form. John Murray McCheyne was a sculptor and teacher. He studied under the sculptor Alexander Carrick at the Edinburgh College of Art between 1930 and 1935. In the 1950s and 1960s he became Master of Sculpture at King’s College, University of Newcastle, and began to work on public sculpture commissions while there. He exhibited at the Palace of Arts' Empire Exhibition Scotland in 1938, and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Glasgow Institute. Watercolour 40 x 57 cm Provenance: Marlborough Galleries. Signed lower right. A characterful Piper view of Newchurch Church, Kent, with its leaning tower. Piper was rather enamoured by Romney Marsh's churches; the architectural historian Nicholas Pevsner commissioned him in 1947 to produce a book on the area for King Penguin Books. Piper stayed for a time there and the published book included water-colours, drawings, and musings on the Marsh. Lithograph 17 x 26 cm A lithograph featuring Oxford's skyline, including the towers of All Souls and the Radcliffe Camera, set against a blustery Piper sky. Piper's painting was reproduced as a lithograph in 1972, to be published in the "Oxford Almanack". The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanac published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to "dwindling interest"). The almanac traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanac artists have included James Basire, Michael Burghers, J. M. W. Turner, and Michael Oelman. John Piper CH was an English painter, printmaker, and designer of stained-glass windows. David Loggan (1634-1692)
Christ Church, Oxford (1675)
Engraving 42 x 84 cm Loggan's view of Christ Church from the 'Oxonia Illustrata'. Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' also includes an engraving of Winchester College (Winchester and New College share William of Wykeham as their founder) whilst the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' includes one of Eton College (which shares its founder, Henry VIII, with King’s College). Bird’s-eye views from this era required a particular talent as an architectural perspectivist; it was not until 1783 that it became possible for artists to ascend via hot air balloons and view the scenes they were depicting from above. Loggan thus had to rely on his imagination in conceiving the views. Loggan’s views constitute the first accurate depictions of the two Universities, in many ways unchanged today. Whilst the Oxford engravings were produced in reasonable numbers and ran to a second edition by Henry Overton (on thicker paper and with a plate number in Roman numerals in the bottom right-hand corner), those of Cambridge were printed in much smaller numbers. The Dutchman Pieter van der Aa published some miniature versions of the engravings for James Beverell’s guidebook to the UK, 'Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne' (circa 1708). The contemporary artist Andrew Ingamells (born 1956) has produced a highly-acclaimed series of etchings which bring Loggan’s original vision up to date. Condition: very good; later hand coloured. Pencil, ink, whitening 72 x 106 cm An architectural design for a public building, with room numbers labelled in red. Osman's detailed and precise mark-making makes for an elegant and artistic design. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. He studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture; he was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group), and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson - we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC.
