Calligraphy for George M Hammer Coventry Cathedral Fittings
Pen and ink 20x35cm c. 1950 Hadden was a senior designer for Geo M Hammer, designers and retailers of school and ecclesiastical furniture. Their lift-top school desks are particularly well regarded, and always carried their brass name plate. Hammer were renowned for their interior woodwork, they were commissioned to undertake the choir stalls in Sir Basil Spence’s ground-breaking Coventry Cathedral. Dick Russell (brother of Gordon Russell and who worked for his brother before World War Two) famously designed the chairs to be used by the congregation; as all-wood stacking chairs they were innovative at the time. As senior designer, Hadden was at the heart of the Coventry project. Coventry's great place in the world of calligraphy comes from the Ralph Beyer typeface (or font) which surely has had an influence on Hadden's calligraphy here - see our matching card that refers to London Churches. Watercolour 28 x 38.5cm (11 x 15 in.) Greig was born in Arbroath, moving in 1891 to London to study art and furthering his education in Paris between 1895 and 1896. Returning to London he produced magazine illustrations for publications such as Punch and The Sketch in black and white. He was art critic for the Morning Post, showing his skills at writing as an historian, also editing the diaries of the landscape painter Joseph Farington (1747-1821) and publishing articles on Gainsborough and Raeburn. Elected Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1898 he was renowned for his colourful landscapes of the middle east and his views of Oxford. Watercolour 38 x 25 cm Matthison was born near Birmingham and attended King Edward’s School in the city. He learned drawing at the Birmingham Central School of Art and then became a pupil of Birmingham artist Edward Watson. He became a professional artist in 1875 and moved to Oxfordshire a few years after; this was where he had the opportunity to produce many of the Oxford views for which he is known today. In 1902 he moved to Park Town in Oxford and was commissioned by Robert Peel to paint more than seventy views of the University of Oxford, which were subsequently made into postcards. Priced at seven for a shilling, they were only available from E Cross of Pembroke Street (a long-since closed business). Raphael Tuck & Sons also commissioned him to produce postcard scenes of Cambridge. Here, the artist captures the library's imposing architectural symmetry. Alfred Blundell was a painter, printmaker and glass engraver who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge holds several of his pictures. Condition: generally very good; old tape reside to very corners. It was a fine specimen of ecclesiastical architecture, founded by the monks of Furness, who were driven from their establishment in Lancashire during an incursion of the Scots. Lithograph in colours, 1937 25 x 30cm (10 x 12.5 inches) Vintage Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race poster from 1937. These small posters were designed to be utilised on buses. Born in Southwark and educated at the Central Schools of Arts and Crafts, Drake Brookshaw was a renowned designer for the Underground Group and London Transport between 1928 and 1958. His wonderful posters evoke a feeling of movement, and probably none more so than this one as the seven visible men strain on their oars. His clever use of colour includes both light blue for Cambridge, and dark blue for Oxford.
