Hans Schleger 'Zero' (1898-1976) London Transport Bus Stop Poster
Screenprint poster c. 1970 16x17.8 cm Printed for London Transport These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.). Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel. In 1924 he moved to New York, applying Modernism to American advertising, and then returned to Berlin in 1929 working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer who introduced him to Jack Beddington the head of advertising at Shell Mex BP. Following the rise of Hitler he emigrated to London where he produced a series of posters for Shell Mex. During World War 2 he worked for the British Government. In 1950 he taught at the Chicago Institute of Design which had been founded by Moholy-Nagy, thus bringing him back to his Bauhaus origins. Bertie Studley Fiven (Australian, 1889-1958) Trinity College, Cambridge
14.5 x 9.5 cm Watercolour c. 1917 Born in Carlton, Victoria, Australia, Fiven enlisted in 1915 in C Company of the 31st Australian Infantry Battalion in July 1915. In November 1915 he embarked on either HMAT Wandilla or HMAT Bakara from Melbourne. Whilst on board the '31st Recorder' newspaper was produced (it ran to only one issue, published in the middle of the Indian Ocean on 1st December 1915) and Fiven produced the illustration for the front cover. He then served in Egypt defending the Suez Canal from the Turks. The Battalion then served in France in the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916, suffering 500 casualties and serving no further part in the war until 1917, where it was on the edge of the Battle of Passchendale in September. The Battalion being disbanded in March 1919, Fiven returned to Australia, returning as a Lieutenant on 15 May 1919 to the relief of his mother Mary and his sweetheart May Moore - whom he married on 16 August 1919. There was a policy of rotating troops away from the front line, and Fiven will have spent some rest time in Cambridge when he painted this picture. He died in Heidelberg in Australia in 1958. Indescribably rare, one of the ones in this series is inscribed 'To Al, with sincerest regards Warren C Guggenheim'. The cartoonist Fougasse, was a British cartoonist who was art editor of Punch 1937-1949, and subsequently editor until 1953. He is best known for his ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ series of posters, and the other posters both for the Ministry of Information, London Underground and others. The Ministry of Information’s wartime poster campaign was soon regarded as dull and uninspiring on account of its hectoring messages such as ‘Keep Calm and Carry On.’ There were posters telling the population how to conduct virtually every minute of their daily lives – for instance by saving old clothes for rags, turning off the lights, saving food, digging for victory, or watching out for spies. With this instruction overload the population ceased paying attention to the posters, so Fougasse offered his services to the Ministry of Information unpaid, with a view to bringing a touch of humour to serious messages. An amusing picture and a pithy caption helped to get the message across to the reader. His distinctive style, with the red border, was adopted by other Ministry artists. Hugh Casson (1910 - 1999) Emmanuel College Cambridge, Front Court
Signed in pencil, and numbered from the limited edition of 500. 24x27cm From Casson’s ever-popular Oxford and Cambridge series of prints. Sir Hugh Casson was educated at Eastbourne College, St John’s College Cambridge and the Bartlett School of Architecture. Trained in the 1930s in the early modernist style, he taught at the Cambridge School of Architecture. After employment as a camoufleur during World War 2 by the Air Ministry, in 1948 he was appointed as director of architecture for the Festival of Britain. A close friend of the Royal Family, he undertook designs for the 1953 coronation, designed the interior of the Royal Yacht Britannia (“The overall idea was to give the impression of a country house at sea”), and taught the Prince of Wales to paint in watercolours. Amongst his architectural achievements are the Elephant House at London Zoo, the 1978 redevelopment of Bristol Docks, the Raised Faculty Building for The University of Cambridge, and a building for the Royal College of Art. He published a number of illustrated books, of which Casson’s Oxford and Casson’s Cambridge are probably the best known. A limited edition series of prints was produced from the paintings. Mabel Alington Royds (1874-1941) Boat Builders
Signed in pencil c.1915-1920 Woodblock Print 23 x 30cm Born in Bedfordshire, Mabel Royds was a painter, printmaker and illustrator. She studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade, after which she travelled to Paris - where she worked in the studio of Walter Sickert - and to Canada, before starting to teach at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1911. In 1914 she married the printmaker Ernest Lumsden, and over the next few years the pair travelled extensively in India and Tibet, which provided a wealth of inspiration for woodcuts such as this one. Royds' technique was unusual in that she painted the colour onto the woodblock with a brush, giving each print a unique character. Christopher Wyndham Hughes (1881-1961) Italian Church Entrance
Pencil drawing c.1930s 35 x 23cm Born in St Albans, in Hertfordshire UK, Hughes was a painter, illustrator, printmaker and teacher. He served in the First World War in the 7th Battalion Wiltshire Regiment being awarded a Military Cross in the 1917 New Years Honours List and attaining the rank of Colonel.
