Sayer studied at Chelsea School of Art under Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore, and then in Paris in Ben Nicholson’s studio. In the late 1930s he was in Cornwall, founding the Mousehole Group Art School. He was latterly a resident of Fulham, being Head of Art at Chelsea Westminster Adult Education Institute from 1966 to 1982, and was well known for his work as a poster artist and book illustrator. He exhibited widely, including Mayor Gallery, Leicester Galleries and the Redfern Gallery.
