    Lithograph 76 x 52 cm This poster was produced to promote 'London Transport Posters', a book by Michael F. Levey, first published in 1976 by Phaidon Press. The 80-page volume delves into the rich history and artistic significance of posters commissioned by London Transport, showcasing how these artworks have both reflected and influenced public taste over the years. The book features a diverse collection of posters, highlighting the evolution of design and advertising strategies employed by London Transport. It serves as both a visual celebration of these artworks and an insightful commentary on their cultural impact. The image featured on this poster was originally published on a 1912 London Transport poster: 'Always Warm and Bright', designed by Mervyn Lawrence. The original painting depicts passengers travelling in a underground car. At this time, posters had become a medium for popular commercial interpretation of contemporary avant-garde art. Here, Laurence employs the strident colour of the Fauves and alludes to Matisse's 'The Red Studio', which was produced the previous year. Both paintings are windows onto full, engaging, over-furnished worlds where form is decorative and described in terms of pure colour. The artists invite you into their painting, offering you an empty underground seat, or a place at the artist's table.     It Is Better To Return Early

      Lithographic poster 102 x 61 cm Printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd for London Transport. This original vintage poster was designed for London Transport and encourages shoppers to head home earlier in the day to avoid congestion on the London Underground and buses. The well-heeled customers in the poster sport smart 1930s shoes, and jostle against their purchases (a Father Christmas puppet and red-berried holly leaves mark the design as published in time for Christmas). The pinstripe-suited gentleman's newspaper serves as the background for the first line of the poster's text, which is slanted in the synthetic cubist style (synthetic cubists were keen to explore collage in their work, often employing collage, especially of newsprint). London Transport was the forerunner of London Underground. During the 1930s London Transport commissioned over forty posters a year from well-known artists such as Laura Knight, CRW Nevinson, Edward Wadsworth, Eric Ravilious, Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, and Edward McKnight Kauffer – a bold policy that did much to popularise avant-garde artistic styles that stemmed from Cubism, Futurism and Abstraction.     Waterways (1965)

      Original vintage poster 102 x 63 cm Overprinted 'This is a reproduction of a poster designed for London Transport'. This was overprinted for a period on copies of London Transport posters (produced on the normal production line) that were sold in what is now the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Finnie's poster promotes travel on London's waterways, and indicates that said waterways are in easy reach of London Underground stations (here, Warwick Road). John Finnie was an illustrator and designer who trained at Leicester College of Art. He was elected a Member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers in 1958, and then worked as a freelance artist, designing posters for the British Ship Building Conference, The Post Office, Shell, London Transport, and many other notable companies.     'Return Tickets At Single Fare'

    20 x 61cm Advertising panel for Metropolitan Line compartment stock 1930s-1950s. Cut down at corners as very often, a sign of being in use on the Metropolitan Line. The simple typography of Edward Johnstone's typeface, developed specially for London Transport, with his absolutely excellent and highly distinctive lower-case 'g' is a joy to behold. In constant use since 1916 it is one of the oldest examples of unchanged corporate branding. Johnstone's pupil Eric Gill adapted the typeface for his own ubiquitous 'Gill Sans'.

A boldly-coloured harlequin figure encourages travel via the London Underground. Spink was a skilled artist and designer who produced a series of posters in the inter-war period for companies including the London Underground, Southern Railways, LNER, Hawker Engineering, and British Steel. He won a prize in 1933 from the Imperial Institute for his poster artwork. He also worked as an aeronautical engineer in Kingston-on-Thames for Hawker Engineering; his greatest achievement was the creation of the 'Squanderbug', a 500cc racing car which he built in 1947, and which races even to this day. Provenance: the artist's estate. Condition: good; a few small scuffs to gouache, as visible in photographs. Handsomely framed.     Summertime - Pleasures by Underground (1925)

      Original vintage poster 101 x 63 cm Signed and dated in plate. Issued by the Underground Electric Railways Co. of London, Ltd., 1925. This is one of a series of posters designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer bearing the legend 'Summertime - Pleasures by Underground'. A doleful Pierrot figure (a lovestruck clown character from commedia dell'arte) plays a lute before a castle with streaming pennants; a country caravan, daffodils, leafy trees and a bright yellow sun complete the scene. Other posters from the series include similar traditional folk characters, such as a Jack-in-the-green. Edward McKnight Kauffer was an American artist and graphic designer who lived for much of his life in the United Kingdom. He is mainly known for his work in poster design, but was also active as a painter, book illustrator and theatre designer. He studied art at the California School of Design from 1910 to 1912 and then at the Académie Moderne in Paris until 1914 (via a six month stint at the Art Institute of Chicago). He moved to London upon the start of the First World War and produced 140 poster for London Underground and London Transport. He created posters for Shell Oil, the Great Western Railway and other commercial clients, and also illustrated books and book covers. Later he also became interested in textiles, interior design, and theatrical design. He returned to New York City in 1940 and began designing posters for American Airlines (his primary client until his death) in 1947 .In 1952 he designed the book jacket for Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man - arguably Kauffer's most famous work.   • Macdonald (Max) Gill (1884-1947) Wonderground Map of London (c. 1924, after 1914 original edition)

    Lithographic poster 75x94cm In the present work, in the top left-hand corner it reads 'On to Wembley' making reference to the British Empire Exhibition of 1924. Gill's original 1914 poster was hugely popular and reprinted with updates to feature topical events. Born in Brighton, Max Gill was the second son in a family of thirteen children; his elder brother was Eric Gill, the typographer and sculptor. Both Gills exhibited significant talent at a young age. Max Gill’s first map was made for a school map-drawing project following which he entered maps into competitions in boys’ magazines. In 1903 he moved to London as assistant to the ecclesiastical architects Sir Charles Nicholson and Hubert Corlette. By 1908 he had started his own architectural practice, but in 1909 Sir Edwin Lutyens commissioned Gill to paint a “wind dial” map for Nashdom, a large house in Buckinghamshire. The wind dial was set over the fireplace and attached to a weather vane on the roof, allowing the occupant to know the direction of the wind from the comfort of the house. He produced seven further wind dials including for Lutyens’s Lindisfarne Castle and for the Allhusen Room at Trinity College, Cambridge. Although he continued to practice as an architect, Frank Pick commissioned him to create seven pictorial maps for the Underground, the first being the famous 1913 ‘Wonderground Map of London Town.’ In 1917 he joined the Imperial War Graves Commission’s headstone design committee, designing the typeface and regimental badges. Gill’s memorials for the fallen in the First World War include for Balliol and Worcester Colleges and Christ Church in Oxford. During the 1920s and 30s Gill undertook many commercial commissions for advertising materials. The Empire Marketing Board and Shell-Mex as well as further maps for the Underground. He designed in 1922 the first diagrammatic map of the Underground which provided the foundation for Beck’s more famous map. By the 1930s his major works were murals. Those of the Arctic and Antarctic on the ceilings of the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge are beautiful, but the most impressive is the map of the North Atlantic in the first-class dining room of the Queen Mary (maiden voyage: 1936, now moored at Long Beach, California). During the Second World War he created a series of propaganda posters for the Ministry of Information.

  • Gill Bradley Monkeys Loose in Notting Hill, 1927

    Lithograph 100 x 65 cm "The monkey hunt which has been entertaining all but those immediately associated with the fugitives is still proceeding. Yesterday morning three of the thirteen members of a monkey jazz band which escaped from the Notting Hill district of London last Friday were still at large. Two of them had entrenched themselves, so to speak, under the arches which support the platform of Latimer Road Metropolitan Railway Station, South Kensington, while the third, Franko, the leader of the band, had left that locality, having apparently boarded a train for Paddington on Monday. He has been "seen" by various people in districts as far apart as Ealing, Brixton, and Brentford. Late on Tuesday night it was discovered that Bimbo, the drummer, had also left Latimer Road." "Five of them got into my store, and ate 28 lbs of biscuits. Eight of us, including two policemen, caught one, after three hours and after sifting two tons of oats. Then it escaped, and we spent three and a half hours recapturing it." What an eventful day the 24th of November 1927 was... Franco, Bimbo and another unnamed monkey made a break for freedom, tunnelling their way through the London underground, venturing far and wide across the capital. Inspired by this adventure, Gill Bradley painted the chaotic simian scenes in her 2014 entry for the Serco Prize for Illustration. The illustration uses bold colours, exaggerated proportions, and a mix of realism and abstraction to create a chaotic and dynamic scene. The judges of the competition 'were drawn to the evident humour of the image, strong colour palette and the fact that it was a bit bonkers, and felt that commuters would find it very intriguing to look at during their travels.'
