    SS Hesleyside

      Pen, ink, and watercolour 6 x 16 cm Provenance: an album of works by the artist. The Hesleyside was a steamer built in 1912. In 1933, as Dunn notes in pen, it was bought by a Greek company and rechristened the SS Kymas. She was torpedoed by a U-boat in 1940. Laurence Dunn was a well-known British marine artist and writer known for his depictions of ships. He grew up in Devon, where he practised drawing passing ships, and went on to study at the Central School of Art. He then worked for shipbuilding firm John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, where he contributed to the design of the Royal Yacht. During the Second World War, Dunn worked in naval intelligence. In the early 1960s, he created many line drawings of Atlantic ocean liners. Upon his death in 2006, the World Ship Society published the following obituary: DUNN, Laurence. [December 15 2006 — Lloyds List] Many readers will be saddened by the death of well-known marine artist and writer Laurence Dunn in his 97th year. A man of encyclopaedic knowledge, he began his lifelong love of ships in Brixham, where he meticulously recorded passing traffic with the exquisitely accurate line drawings which later became something of a trademark. While studying at London’s Central School of Art his work was noticed by the Southern Railway, which commissioned profiles of its fleet, and this in turn led to work for Orient Line, where he also designed the well-known corn-coloured hull, and later Thorneycroft, where he helped with shaping draft plans for a new royal yacht.     Christ's College, Cambridge

      Engraving 15 x 22 cm A nineteenth-century view of Christ's College, Cambridge, complete with two academics and a street-sweeper. Richard Bankes Harraden was a printmaker, painter, and drawing master. He was active in Cambridge, producing many views of the colleges, and subsequently several Oxford colleges. Harraden was an early and exhibiting member of the Society of British Artists in London, which was established in 1823, and remained a member until 1849. He specialised in depictions of landscape, topography and architecture, and was the son of Richard Harraden (1756 - 1838) with whom he published plates as 'Harraden & Son'.   • 'Samivel' Paul Gayet-Tancrède (1907 - 1992)

    Samuel: poète du verbe et de l'image (1992)

      Original vintage poster 95 x 65 cm This poster advertises an exhibition of Samuel's work, entitled 'Samuel: poet of word and image' and held in Grenoble in 1992, the year of the artist's death. It features Samuel's 1987 Au Vrai Sommet ('To the True Summit') as its image; the lone figure gazing out into the mountainous blue, gaunt and clad only in a loincloth, seems to represent Samivel's outstanding but isolated work. Samivel was a writer, an artist, a photographer, an explorer and more. In 1948 he accompanied Paul Émile Victor on the first French Greenland expedition, making three documentary films in the process. His friends included Théodore Monod and Gilbert André - the latter the mayor of Bonneval-sur-Arc and one of the founders of the Vanoise National Park - and with them and others he spent his whole life aiming for the protection of the imperilled countryside. The graphic artist side of him had a life-long fascination with high mountains, and his illustrated books and series of posters of the French Alps have long been popular.     Royal Ascot (1935)

      Original vintage poster 101 x 63 cm A text poster advertising Southern Railway as a means of travelling to and from Royal Ascot. Graham Sutherland OM was an English artist known for his romantic, abstract landscapes and portraits of public figures, including Churchill and the Queen Mother. Sutherland spent the 1920s mostly making landscape prints, but, following the collapse of the print market in the early 1930s branched out into watercolours. He also undertook a few commercial commissions for posters, working for London Transport, Shell and others. He served as an official war artist in the Second World War, painting industrial scenes on the British home front. After the war he worked in oils and explored figurative painting.       Original vintage poster 101 x 63 cm A copy of this poster is held by the London Transport Museum. Published by the Baynard Press. Nash's poster encourages us to buy a season ticket in order to travel more cheaply by train. A modernist suburb is juxtaposed with a monochrome photograph of the Royal Exchange in the heart of the City of London, suggesting that by travelling in from suburbia we can "come out to live". Paul Nash was a modernist, surrealist British artist. He is known for his modernist landscapes and work as a war artist. He studied at the Slate School of Art and soon focused his work on landscapes, especially those containing ruins; he went on to produce some of the most recognisable artworks of the First World War, mostly depicting war-torn landscapes.     Spain - Fly TWA

      Original vintage poster 102 x 63 cm Klein's poster for Trans World Airlines (TWA) advertises flights to Spain. His design features two matadors in rich traditional address, in a stadium where a bullfight is presumably about to take place; a TWA plane flies overhead. David Klein was an American artist notable for his posters. He designed posters for the US Army, many and various Broadway productions, Trans World Airlines, and many more commercial clients. In the late 1950s and early 1960s his travel posters became iconic images of the era of commercial aeroplane travel. One of his posters was added to the MoMa's collection in 1957. Condition: good.     Original vintage poster 100 x 60 cm A view of the Téléphérique de la vallée Blanche cable car over Mont Blanc entices us to book a skiing trip to Chamonix. Pierre Tairraz was the fourth in line of the Tairraz family of mountain photographers, following in the footsteps of his father George, his father George, and his father Joseph. Between 1857 and 2000, four photographers, from father to son, invent and transmit the art of mountain photography. Their family name is Tairraz. Pierre was an exceptional climber and worked for 40 years photographing mountains, particularly the French Alps.       Original vintage poster 102 x 63 cm Overprinted 'This is a reproduction of a poster designed for London Transport'. This was overprinted for a period on copies of London Transport posters (produced on the normal production line) that were sold in what is now the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. Finnie's poster promotes travel on London's waterways, and indicates that said waterways are in easy reach of London Underground stations (here, Warwick Road). John Finnie was an illustrator and designer who trained at Leicester College of Art. He was elected a Member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers in 1958, and then worked as a freelance artist, designing posters for the British Ship Building Conference, The Post Office, Shell, London Transport, and many other notable companies.     Etching 23 x 15 cm Hand-signed in pencil lower left, and titled in pencil lower right. Initialled 'MR' in plate lower left. The eminent Tom Tower, as seen from Pembroke Square, with the college crest below. Mabel Oliver Rae was born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, and trained at the Slade School of Fine Art between 1888 and 1890. Rae is known for her skilled etchings of various rural scenes and townscapes, particularly those of the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. She signed works with the pseudonym 'M.Oliver Rae', a ruse to conceal the fact she was a female artist, so as not to reduce her chances with commercial dealers and agents.     Worcester College, Oxford

      Etching and aquatint 44 x 59 cm Titled and numbered 77/100 and signed lower right, all in pencil. The artist's view of Worcester College's facade, with the hall projecting on the left and the college chapel on the right. Beer's ability to capture the unique texture of Oxford's old stone is manifest. Born in London in 1928, just too late to serve in the Second World War, Richard Beer studied between 1945 - 1950 at the Slade School. Subsequently, a French Government scholarship allowed him to spend time in Paris at Atelier 17, working under Stanley William Hayter (1901 - 1988), one of the most significant print makers of the 20th Century – having spent the War in New York, advising as a camofleur, Hayter only returned to Paris in 1950. Subsequently Beer studied at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris. Working for John Cranko, choreographer for the Royal Ballet, Beer designed the sets and costumes for his The Lady and the Fool at Covent Garden, subsequently working for him following his move in 1961 to Stuttgart Ballet. Additionally he produced book illustrations and designed book jackets. Beer later taught print-making at the Chelsea School of Art, where he was a popular teacher. Probably his greatest work was a collaboration with John Betjeman to produce a portfolio of prints of ten Wren Churches in the City for Editions Alecto, copies of which are in The Government Art Collection. That collection contains a total of 54 prints by Beer, and the Tate Gallery’s collection holds seven. His Oxford series was also produced for Editions Alecto as was a series of predominantly architectural views in Southern Europe. Most of his prints are of architectural subjects.     Wellington Bomber

      Silver gelatin photograph 20 x 25 cm The Vickers Wellington was a British twin-engined, long-range medium bomber. It was designed during the mid-1930s at Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey. Led by Vickers-Armstrongs’ chief designer Rex Pierson; a key feature of the aircraft is its geodetic airframe fuselage structure, which was principally designed by Barnes Wallis. Development had been started in response to Air Ministry Specification B.9/32, issued in the middle of 1932, for a bomber for the Royal Air Force. This specification called for a twin-engined day bomber capable of delivering higher performance than any previous design. Other aircraft developed to the same specification include the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley and the Handley Page Hampden. During the development process, performance requirements such as for the tare weight changed substantially, and the engine used was not the one originally intended. The Wellington was used as a night bomber in the early years of the Second World War, performing as one of the principal bombers used by Bomber Command. During 1943, it started to be superseded as a bomber by the larger four-engined “heavies” such as the Avro Lancaster. The Wellington continued to serve throughout the war in other duties, particularly as an anti-submarine aircraft. It holds the distinction of having been the only British bomber that was produced for the duration of the war, and of having been produced in a greater quantity than any other British-built bomber. The Wellington remained as first-line equipment when the war ended, although it had been increasingly relegated to secondary roles. The Wellington was one of two bombers named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, the other being the Vickers Wellesley. A larger heavy bomber aircraft designed to Specification B.1/35, the Vickers Warwick, was developed in parallel with the Wellington; the two aircraft shared around 85% of their structural components. Many elements of the Wellington were also re-used in a civil derivative, the Vickers VC.1 Viking. Leslie Carr was a painter and poster designer from London. He served in the Tank Corps in the First World War and then became a professional artist, mainly producing maritime and architectural scenes. He designed posters for Southern Railway, the London and North Eastern Railway, and British Railways (among others). Carr served as a fireman in the Second World War and was a part of several firemen artists’ exhibitions. Carr was a member of the Society of Marine Artists. Charles E Brown was an aviation photographer. His archive of 30,000 images has been held by the RAF Museum in Hendon since 1978.       Gouache and oil on paper 35 x 52 cm Provenance: Marlborough Galleries 1968; Magdalene Street Gallery, Cambridge; The University of Cambridge Under Librarian. Titled, dated ("2010" for 20th October), and signed lower right. A typically Piper landscape with four main fields of colour quartering the picture. Piper painted several views in Bordeaux, of which this is one; his fascination with local topography is evident in his characterful and abstract evocation of the region's natural forms. John Piper CH was an English painter, printmaker, and designer of stained-glass windows. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics and ceramics.     Edward Bawden was an English painter, illustrator and graphic artist, known for his prints, book covers, posters, and garden metalwork furniture. Bawden taught at the Royal College of Art, where he had been a student, worked as a commercial artist, and served as a war artist in World War II. He illustrated several books and painted various public murals, and his work and career are often associated with that of his contemporary, Eric Ravilious.
