José Ortega (1921 - 1990)
Romanische Kunst Spanien (1960s)
Original vintage poster 100 x 63 cm Printed in Madrid for the Publications de la Direccion General del Turismo. Ortega's poster for the Spanish tourist board promotes the Romanesque art of Spain. This edition of the poster was produced for circulation in Germany. José García Ortega was born in Arroba de los Montes and was a member of the Communist Party. He worked as a painter and sculptor, studying at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 1953 he went to France to study art, funded by a French government scholarship. He returned to Spain throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and became a commercially successful artist. Some of his most famous designs include the posters which the Spanish tourist board commissioned from him circa 1960. Condition: generally very good; a few tiny repaired edge tears. Not backed. Foire Internationale de Hanover
Original vintage poster 84 x 59 cm This poster with its highly modern logo advertises the 1960 Hanover Fair. British military authorities organised the trade fair as a bolster to Germany's post-war economy. Over 1,000 exhibitors showed a selection of items made in Germany for overseas export. Jeux de la Passion Oberammergau (1960)
Original vintage poster 100 x 63 cm Printed in Germany. This magnificent poster advertises the Passion Play (an outdoor play telling the Easter story) held every ten years in Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps. Tradition tells that the town was struck with plague in 1633; the townsfolk vowed that they would perform a Passion Play every ten years as a symbol of thanks to God if the plague would end, which it did. At the turn of the twentieth century, improved railways across Europe meant that people from outside the Alps could travel to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau. This poster was designed for publication in France, to encourage the French to come to see the play. Condition: generally very good; a few tiny repaired edge tears. Not backed. France - les vins de Bourgogne Le Clos de Vougeot Cote d'Or
Original vintage poster 61 x 40 cm An original poster depicting the Château du Clos de Vougeot vineyard in Burgundy during the grape harvest. Men and women pick the grapes outside the Château. Standing in the very heart of Burgundy's vineyards, Clos de Vougeot was originally a wine farm, built in the 12th century by monks from the nearby Abbey of Cîteaux. In the 16th century, a Renaissance style château was added to the existing buildings. Even though the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot does not produce wine anymore, it stays the symbol of a millenary of Burgundy's History. Condition: generally very good, small crease to top corner. Johannes 'Joan' Blaeu (1596 - 1673)

Engraving with later hand-colouring 43 x 52 cm A decorative map of Northumberland by the celebrated Dutch mapmaker and artist Joan Blaeu, (son of the cartographer Willem Blaeu). Crests of the local gentry appear in the top right hand corner. Blaeu moved to Amsterdam in 1920 to join the family firm of mapmakers. In 1635, the business published the Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus in two volumes - the largest and most expensive book published in the seventeenth century, and the venture for which the Blaeu were most famed. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638; Joan became the official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company, as his father had been before him. Hugh Casson (1910 - 1999)
Caius Court, Gonville and Caius College (1992)
Lithograph 31 x 44 cm Signed and numbered 358/500, both in pencil. Casson's depiction of Gonville and Caius, with sun slanting into the 16th-century Caius Court. Members of the college stroll through the court. Sir Hugh Casson was educated at Eastbourne College; St John’s College, Cambridge; and the Bartlett School of Architecture. Trained in the 1930s in the early modernist style, he taught at the Cambridge School of Architecture. After employment as a camoufleur during World War 2 by the Air Ministry, in 1948 he was appointed as director of architecture for the Festival of Britain. A close friend of the Royal Family, he undertook designs for the 1953 coronation, designed the interior of the Royal Yacht Britannia (“The overall idea was to give the impression of a country house at sea”), and taught the young Charles III to paint in watercolours. Amongst his architectural achievements are the Elephant House at London Zoo, the 1978 redevelopment of Bristol Docks, the Raised Faculty Building for The University of Cambridge, and a building for the Royal College of Art. He published a number of illustrated books, of which Casson’s Oxford and Casson’s Cambridge are probably the best known. A limited edition series of prints was produced from the paintings. Louis Osman FRIBA (1914 - 1996)
A Pavilion in a Private Park
Pen, ink and wash 67 x 100 cm Provenance: the family of the artist. Signed lower right. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson – we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. At Canons Ashby he established a workshop and had a team of silversmiths and goldsmiths working for him. In 1976 he made the gold enamelled coffin that holds the copy of the Magna Carta on view in the United States Capitol, Washington, DC. Condition: generally very good to main central area; loss to top left, creasing, soiling, and edge tears to right (10cm at most).
