A talented British Impressionist, Livens is perhaps most famous for having painted the first known portrait of his friend Van Gogh – whom he had met whilst studying at the Academy in Antwerp during 1885/86. They remained in touch thereafter. Livens deserves to be much better known than he is, the main reason he is not being the destruction of much of his work firstly in the blitz and secondly in 1957 at his widow’s home. His views of London’s West End are well known and popular.
