John Chessell Buckler (1793-1894)

Buckler was a British architect, eldest son of John Buckler, also an architect, with whom Buckler worked prior to taking on the practice.

As a child he received art lessons from Francis Nicholson, the painter, only working with his father from 1810 – the year in which this painting is painted.

He worked extensively in Oxford, repairing St Mary’s Church, and Oriel, Brasenose, Magdalen and Jesus Colleges. In the competition to rebuild the Houses of Parliament in London he won second place – behind Charles Barry. He also wrote the text in “Views of the Cathedral Churches of England and Wales” which was illustrated with his father’s engravings.
