A skilled painter and draughtsman with a passion for sporting subjects, Joseph Appleyard (1908-1960) studied part-time at Leeds College of Art from 1925 to 1932. Based in Far Headingley, Leeds, he exhibited widely across Yorkshire and held several solo exhibitions in his hometown. His artwork was frequently reproduced in regional newspapers and magazines, earning him a strong reputation—particularly for his depictions of horses. Deeply involved in the local art community, he also served as honorary secretary of the Yorkshire Group of Artists. His work is held in the collections of the art galleries in Newcastle upon Tyne and Wakefield.

This dynamic and spirited painting captures a pack of hounds mid-pursuit, surging out of a wooded thicket and into open countryside. Appleyard masterfully conveys the energy and urgency of the moment through bold brushwork and vivid colour. The composition, with its sweeping lines and subtle use of light and shadow, draws the viewer into the chase, creating a strong visual effect. A fine example of Appleyard’s skill as a sporting artist, the work reflects his deep engagement with rural life and his flair for animating the natural world.

Condition: Generally very good.
