Oliver Hall (1869–1957) was a British landscape painter and etcher celebrated for his evocative depictions of the English and Scottish countryside. Trained at the Royal College of Art and in Spain, Hall developed a distinctive style marked by rich texture and atmospheric light. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and became a full Academician in 1928. Hall travelled extensively in Spain, France and Italy, developing a particular fondness for Spanish landscapes and rugged moorland. A skilled etcher as well as a painter, his works are held in major public collections, including the Tate and the British Museum.
This particular etching depicts a bridge, cutting across a rugged landscape. It is difficult to tell where exactly Hall produced this study, though it bears striking resemblances to his other studies of bridges in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. Not only does he convey the rustic charm of this scene through his careful attention to the masonry of the bridge, he also demonstrates his artistic prowess as he captures the reflections, eddies and flows of the water below.
Condition: Generally very good.
