Fred Taylor was one of Britain’s foremost poster artists, in a career stretching from 1908 to the 1940s. Although skilled as an artist in many fields – he exhibited at the Royal Academy – his main strength was architecture. Producing posters for London Underground, the Empire Marketing Board and other travel companies, this poster of Cardinal Wolsey is a particularly successful and bold composition.

Hampton Court was Wolsey’s residence until Henry VIII stripped him of his government office and property in 1529; Henry then taking Hampton Court as his own London residence.
