Sir Muirhead Bone
Building Nuffield College, Oxford Almanack

Lithograph
75 x 40 cm
1950

A lithograph of the building of Nuffield College, based on a drawing by Sir Mairhead Bone.

Bone’s drawing was reproduced as a lithograph in 1956, to be published in the “Oxford Almanack”. The Oxford Almanack was an annual almanac published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 through 2019 (when printing sadly ceased due to “dwindling interest”). The almanac traditionally included engravings or lithographs of the University and information about the upcoming year. Other almanac artists have included James Basire, Michael Burghers, J. M. W. Turner, and Michael Oelman.

Sir Muirhead Bone (1876–1953) was a Scottish artist celebrated for his masterful etchings, drypoints, and war drawings. Trained as an architect, Bone brought a precise, structural sensibility to his art, capturing industrial scenes, landscapes, and urban life with striking detail and atmosphere– as is illustrated in this lithograph. He became Britain’s first official war artist during World War I, producing poignant images of the Western Front. Knighted in 1937, Bone played a prominent role in British art circles and was instrumental in promoting the etching revival of the early 20th century. His work remains a vital record of modern Britain in transition.

Condition: Generally very good.
