William F Ashburner (Fl. 1900-1932) RWS
A Maiden in a Classical Garden
Watercolour heightened with bodycolour
c. 1910s – 1920s
Ashburner made a career of painting pretty girls in elegant settings. Based in London, before moving to Ewell in 1932 he exhibited widely, including the RA, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours from a time starting in 1900. This painting is a particularly fine example of his work, the composition perhaps echoing those of John William Godward’s neoclassical works.
Condition: generally very good, slight staining to very margins, outside mount area.
