Prisoner of War Camp
Pen, ink and wash
22 x 18 cm

This poignant work depicts a British soldier, stripped down to his underwear, being inspected by a Nazi soldier. The contrast between the two men, one wrapped up in an oversized trench coat, the other wearing only his military cap and his underwear, highlights the dehumanising and humiliating nature of the situation. Despite this, the British soldier stands tall and proud, Keeling thus captures the resilience of his subject’s character, refusing to demean him.
