Peter Collins ARCA (1923-2001)

Strap Hangers on the Underground, London

Pen, ink and monochrome watercolour wash
Provenance: The Artist’s Studio

A stongly-painted image, with a generous use of skilfully executed shadow and a well-balanced composition. Strap Hangers are a feature of London life during the busy commuting hours and here Collins captures the studied indifference with which the commuters avoid each other’s gaze. A scene that could have been captured at any point in the last century and a half.
