HMHS Asturias

Asturias was built in 1907 for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company for service on the Southampton – Buenos Aires route. Requisitioned by the Admiralty at the outbreak of World War One she became a Hospital Ship subsequently transporting large numbers of sick and wounded back from the Western Front. With accommodation for 896 patients, on one occasion 2,400 were on board. Torpedoed in March 1917, with the loss of 35 crew, after landing patients at Avonmouth she remained in use as an ammunition store. After the War, in 1920, she was repurchased by Royal Mail Line, operating cruises to the Mediterranean and West Indies under the name Arcadian. Scrapped 1933.
