A companion piece to the view of Laon Cathedral that was sold at lot 24 at Christies on 26 May 2011. Laon in Northern France is the capital city of the Aisne department. A tiny city – with a population of some 25,000 – its mediaeval district rises one hundred metres above the surrounding plain. The mediaeval district is dominated by the cathedral which was begun around 1160 following destruction of its eighth century predecessor. The west front – the subject of this view – was the last part of the building to be built, with its fine rose window dating from 1210 and is pure gothic.
