Thring showed early talent winning second prize in the junior section of a drawing competition in Flight magazine in 1919. He trained at the Royal College of Art, overlapping with John Piper, and became a talented architectural perspectivist, as can be seen in the present picture.  He spent the war in the RAF as principal instructor in model making, making models for briefing troops before assaults, based at the joint British-American V-Section model shop located at the RAF’s Central Interpretation Unit at Medmenham, Buckinghamshire.
