Douglas Hickman Design for a Brutalist Building
Douglas Hickman (? – 1990)
Design for a Brutalist Building (1968)
Signed and dated ‘Douglas Hickman 1968’
Watercolour and ink on paper
35.5×76.2cm (14 x 30 inches)
Hickman was an architect practising in Birmingham, famous for producing probably the only major work on Birmingham’s architecture. He restored Birmingham’s Great Western Arcade, a splendid Victorian shopping arcade. In the present picture, a glorious 1960s brutalist concrete building is presented below a dark brooding sky; small figures arrayed beforehand are dominated by the building, relief being provided only by a tree.
